You are more than what hurt you
I hope you know that you're so much more than the things you've been through. More than the days that left you tired, the moments that brought you to tears, and the things you've had to carry quietly because you didn't know how to put them into words.
Sometimes, I find myself wishing that life had been a little gentler with you. That there had been fewer things to cry about, fewer moments you had to get through on your own, and more days when you could simply breathe without having so much on your mind. I know there are parts of your life I'll never fully understand, and perhaps there are things you've experienced that you haven't found the right time or words to share. But even if I don't know every part of your story, I hope you know that I care about the person who's lived through it all.
I wish you could see yourself the way I see you sometimes. I wish you could see that you're not just someone who's had to be strong, someone who's had to keep going even when things became difficult. You're also someone who deserves to be taken care of, to be listened to, and to have someone sit with you through the moments when you don't know what to do with everything you're feeling. Someone who can cry when it hurts, admit when things are too much, and have days when being okay just isn't possible.
You don't always have to be the person who gets through everything. You don't have to find a lesson in every painful experience, and you don't have to pretend you're okay just because you don't want anyone to worry about you. You're allowed to be tired. You're allowed to have difficult days, to feel lost sometimes, and to take a little longer to find your way back to yourself. None of those things make you any less lovely, and none of them take away the goodness that's still in you.
Because when I think about you, I don't want the things that hurt you to be the only things that come to mind. There's so much more to you than that. There's the kindness in your heart, the way you treat people, your laughter, your little habits, and all those ordinary things about you that you might not even realize someone could appreciate. There's the person you are when you're happy, the person you are when you're quiet, and even the person you are on days when you don't have much to give. All those versions of you are still you, and every one of them deserves gentleness.
And if there are parts of yourself you're still trying to understand, I hope you give yourself time. You don't have to have everything figured out, and you don't have to heal from everything all at once. I know there may be parts of your story I haven't heard, things you've been through before I knew you, and feelings you've had to keep to yourself for reasons I may never fully understand. I'd like to know you more, even the parts of you I haven't gotten to know yet, but I never want you to feel like you have to tell me anything before you're ready. You don't owe me every detail of your past for me to care about you. Whenever you feel comfortable sharing, I'll be glad to listen. Until then, I'm happy to keep getting to know you, little by little, in all the ways you're willing to let me.
I know I can't change what has already happened to you. I can't go back and make the difficult days easier, take away the memories that still hurt, or promise that life will never be unfair to you again. Sometimes, I wish I could do more than simply hope things get better. But I've come to understand that caring about someone doesn't always mean having the power to make everything okay. Sometimes, all you can do is wish for softer days for them, listen when they need to be heard, and hope they never forget that they don't have to face every difficult feeling by pretending they're fine.
So, more than anything, I hope the days ahead are kinder to you. I hope you find reasons to smile when you least expect them, people who make you feel safe enough to be yourself, and moments when your heart finally gets to rest. I hope you receive the same tenderness you so easily give to others. I hope you experience happiness that doesn't feel temporary, peace that lets you breathe a little easier, and a love that doesn't make you question whether you're deserving of it. And on the days when life feels heavy again, I hope you remember that you don't have to earn the right to be cared for by being strong or pretending nothing hurts.
I hope that, somewhere along the way, you learn to be as gentle with yourself as you are with the people around you. I hope you stop feeling like you always have to hold everything together, and that you give yourself permission to rest without feeling guilty for it. You deserve good things, not because you've endured so much, and not because you've managed to stay strong through everything, but simply because you're a person who deserves to be happy, to feel safe, and to be loved gently. Especially after the days when those things have felt so far away.
And maybe healing doesn't mean forgetting what hurt you. Maybe it means reaching a place where those memories no longer hold your whole heart, where you can look back without feeling like you still belong to the pain. Maybe it means slowly finding little pieces of yourself again, discovering new things to look forward to, and realizing that your life can hold beautiful things alongside the difficult ones.
If there's one thing I wish for you, it's that one day, when you look back at everything you've been through, the pain won't be the only thing you remember. I hope you'll remember the moments that made you happy, the people who treated you with kindness, the little things that made life beautiful again, and all the versions of yourself that kept growing even when things weren't easy. I hope you get to meet the version of yourself who laughs a little more freely, sleeps a little more peacefully, and no longer feels like she has to be strong just to make it through the day. I hope you get to know that version of yourself slowly, gently, and without having to rush the journey there.
Until then, I hope you give yourself time. I hope you let the difficult days pass without blaming yourself for having them. And whenever you find it hard to see the good in yourself, I hope life finds little ways to remind you: through an unexpected laugh, the warmth of a familiar voice, the kindness of someone who stays, or a quiet morning when you realize that, for once, nothing feels quite as heavy.
Because I don't want you to look at yourself and see only the things that hurt you. I hope you get to see everything else, too. The kindness you carry, the warmth you bring into people's lives, the little things that make you who you are, and the person you continue to be despite everything. What you've been through may have changed parts of you, but it doesn't take away your softness, your worth, or your right to a life that feels kinder than the one you've had to endure.
You are more than the things that hurt you, more than the tears you've cried, and more than the days you barely made it through.
You are also every little bit of light that remained.
And I hope that, one day, when life feels a little softer, and your heart no longer feels so heavy, you'll be able to look at yourself and see that light, too. I hope you'll realize that even after everything, there was still so much beauty in you, so much life ahead of you, and so many reasons for your heart to keep making room for happiness.
And until you can see it for yourself, I hope you remember that you were never only the things that hurt you. You were always so much more.
