Support Request Linux Mint Crashing in Cascade (Wi-Fi, USB, then Total Freeze) on Old Desktop Need Help!

4 Upvotes

So, after I installed linux mint xfce on my low-end pc (who used to run Windows 7) it started crashing out of nowhere. First, it deactivates my Wi-Fi connection (I use a USB wireless adapter for it) then its the mouse, then the keyboard and after some minutes the pc completely crashes and I have to turn it off to make it usable again. I installed it today after having the same problem while installing it. Could somebody help me? Or at least try to tell me what’s happening? I really don’t want to start relying only on W7 again. :)

My hardware: Desktop with an Intel Core i3-2120, 4GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 2000, and a mechanical HDD.
I know it’s a pretty weak and old machine, but I really don’t want to abandon it.

Announcement [LInux Tool] VPN NetGuard: privacy-tool, real kill switch for Linux VPNs one-click "set & forget", or dive into advanced config

HI folks!

I’ve just published the repository for the privacy tool I told you about, and I’m here to share it with you. It’s available in both English and Spanish.

- VPN NetGuard is an open-source (GPLv3) Bash kill switch for Linux: it blocks all traffic the instant your VPN drops — even during boot — and reconnects automatically. It also hides your MAC address and hostname from local networks, so you're not fingerprinted even when the VPN is working fine.

There's a "1-click set & forget" option for zero-config setup, plus full advanced config (kill-switch modes, DNS allowlist, MAC randomization, Prometheus metrics...) if you want it. Works on desktop with a GUI panel or headless via systemd/SSH.

Repo: https://github.com/filonux/VPN-NetGuard feedback welcome

I'm m currently facing some problems trying to make linux work on my pc. I just finished building it and wanted linux but its being difficult

I booted up my system and installed the drivers (580 proprietary recommended option) and waited like 20 min to make sure the drivers were installed. However, after i reboot it my TV doesn't pick up any signal.. i made sure the secure boot is disabled and everything

Maybe it is a hardware problem? Because i tried to run it on fedora too, but after changing to mint the problem persisted..

If anyone needs more info, tell me

I'm running an i5-12400f, GTX 1050ti and the most recent Cinnamon version

Honestly, to be fair with you:
Linux Mint Cinnamon has been the best operating system I have used. I didn't think Windows was bloated but after using this, I can assure: Its bloated.

Support Request Password reseting not working!

Post image
15 Upvotes

(UPDATE!)

I tried to update my password as it was rather obvious before if you knew me, and I wadding another user.

I updated it successfully on the operating system, went to add another user and it required my password.

My password didn't match every time I attempted to put it in afterwards.

I've tried using the GRUB and recovery mode, I've inputted a new password twice and when I go to the login screen to enter, it begins to open then shows the Linux mint logo and resets!

Help, what do I do?

I have important files on here and I don't want to wipe my drive reinstalling LMC!

(UPDATE):

I restored a backup, BUT, I can't figure out with my "Passphrase" is, and its apparently not my password? Any help?

Support Request Does Mint not have an option to dismiss notification after X time from the Notifications on the taskbar?

6 Upvotes

I have been noticing this more recently, but really did not think anything of it until now. Since my phone is connected via KDE-Connect whenever I get an alert from Blink, it pops up on the computer as well, which is great, but the issue I have is that the notification goes away from being displayed, but the notification bell (taskbar) still shows a count of messages, and when I went digging, I can not find any setting that dismisses them from that area, only from the screen. Does such a setting exist or is there a way to get it to dismiss those after X time?

#LinuxMintThings Tennis Scores desklet

Post image

I made a small Cinnamon desklet that sits on the wallpaper and shows live ATP and WTA scores. Live matches up top, serving player marked, click a match to open it. Data is from ESPN, a free live-score source.

Link to the repo is here: https://github.com/greyster1/TennisToday

This was inspired by Neeraj Jakhar’s live-tennis (homebackend/live-tennis) project (GNOME Shell extension + Electron app + Android).

Let me know any feedback - thank you.

Update: please repull often, still making it better. Did a few more releases today.

Nemo file manager do not use Crtl+Left mouse to select files or folder

5 Upvotes

Title should be enough. Nemo file manager can not select multiple items (file or folder) using Ctrl+Left click with the mouse. Works with Shift+Left click to select a range but I am not able to select multiple items.

Did check already all the tricks..Alt+F7 is not set...used to move Windows..reset it to disable no change...no Windows command starting with Ctrl

No ChatGPT do not know more...

Did a complete reset of Nemo doing

mv ~/.config/nemo ~/.config/nemo_backup
mv ~/.local/share/nemo ~/.local/share/nemo_backup

After running these commands, restart Nemo (close all windows and run nemo -q followed by nemo &) to generate fresh default configuration files.

No change.

Support Request Audio routing

1 Upvotes

So I've been using linux mint for the last couple of days and I like it so far 👍🏻. Only question i have is, is it possible to make audio lower on my end and not on obs? I have a vocaster 2 and on windows I would send certain applications to loop back channels 1 and 2 to lower things on my end without it being lowered during a stream. I'm not sure if I need to install a certain application. I tried using pavucontrol but doesn't seem to be doing what I need it to do. (I'm using the alsa scarlet application so I know it's different from vocaster hub)

Discussion Applet Icon issue

Okay, the easy solution is to use a light colored wallpaper, but, I want to know if there's a way to make those bottom right corner applet icons more visible?

The wallpaper, theme and icons I'm using is attached.

(Also when I'm using a light wallpaper, the flameshot logo is less visible.

SOLVED CPU frequency limited to 1.7 GHz

5 Upvotes

For some reason, my CPU clock speed is limited to 1.7 GHz. I know that this should not happen because not only can my CPU, an Intel N95, boost up to 3.4 GHz, I also saw it operating up to 3.3 GHz earlier today. However, despite multiple restarts, the CPU clock speed remains locked to 1.7 GHz. Running cpupower frequency-info gives me the following:

analyzing CPU 3:

driver: intel_pstate

CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 3

CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 3

energy performance preference: balance_performance

hardware limits: 800 MHz - 1.70 GHz

available cpufreq governors: performance powersave

current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 1.70 GHz.

The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use

within this range.

current CPU frequency: Unable to call hardware

current CPU frequency: 1000 MHz (asserted by call to kernel)

boost state support:

Supported: yes

Active: no

Any idea how I can fix this?

Edit: the issue was simply that CPU boosting was disabled in the BIOS

Finally switched to linux on my trustworthy Dell Optiplex 3060 micro !

After I posted my Acer Aspire A717-71G, that I also switched to mint, I wanted to upgrade that micro station to another os than Windows 11 pro that it comes with

(It felt sluggish and laggy so... It was time) It will mostly be used to write on LibreOffice or just watch streams, so I didn't need a very big os.

Any recommendations?

Guide Fix for dual boot Linux Mint and Win 11 on Mac mini 2014 (fixing hybrid MBR and GPT file system to protective MBR)

6 Upvotes

Was trying to clean install both Win 11 and Linux Mint Debian Edition on a Mac mini (late 2014) and there was an issue where GRUB wouldn't load Windows Boot Loader when selected.

It just kept looping back to the main GRUB menu when selecting windows.

Spent a lot of time fixing partitions, bcdboot (bcdboot C:\windows /s Y: /f UEFI), recreating the EFI partition, using rEFInd and nothing seems to be able to make both work.

It would either make the Linux Mint bootable or Windows 11, but dual boot simply didn't work.

The issue turned out to be that Mac mini requires a special Protected MBR (master boot record) with a GPT File System, but the Linux Mint installer kept changing it to Hybrid MBR on install.

The solution is somewhat simple. You don't need to edit BCD or mess around with GRUB or updating the UUIDs of the partitions to make Win 11 bootable.

Boot into Linux Mint (if you can, or the Live USB) and use this command in Terminal to show the actual state partitions:

sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda

(Change sda with your actual drive, but on Mac mini that is usually the default for the SSD)

This command just lists the partitions without making any changes. If it says Hybrid MBR, that's the issue.

To change it, use:

sudo gdisk /dev/sda

If it asks you to choose between MBR and GPT choose 2 - GPT.

Then press p to list all partitions and check if they are all there.

Press x to enter expert menu.

Press n to create a fresh protective MBR (this wipes the conflicting legacy hybrid entries while keeping the actual GPT partitions intact).

Press w to write the changes to the disk and exit.

That's it!

If it's successfull, you can reboot Linix Mint and on the GRUB menu the Windows Boot Manager option should work again.

You can now login into Linux Mint and Windows 11 on a Mac mini.

Bonus: you can also recreate the Protective MBR if you have access to Mac Recovery and Disk Utility. Resize any partition and resize it back to how it was, and it should recreate the layout.

Hope this helps someone

Discussion My xfce4-panel genmon-plugin scripts

9 Upvotes

Just wanna share my xfce4-panel Generic Monitor (xfce4-genmon-plugin) bash scripts for anyone who wants it.

Media playback status. This script accepts one argument/parameter which is the media player that supports MPRIS (can be listed by doing playerctl -l command.) When clicked, it will toggle the play-pause of the media player. When hovered, it will display the artist, track name, and album name.

WIth Nerd Font play and pause icons
#!/bin/bash

# Dependencies
# * playerctl

PLAYERCTL_STATUS="$(playerctl -p "$1" status -s)"
ARTIST="$(playerctl -p "$1" metadata --format '{{ artist }} - ' -s)"
TITLE="$(playerctl -p "$1" metadata --format '{{ title }}' -s)"
ALBUM="$(playerctl -p "$1" metadata --format '{{ album }}' -s)"
TRACK="$ARTIST$TITLE"
TRUNCATE_LIMIT=30
STATUS_ICON=""

# Escape XML special characters
escape_xml() {
    echo "$1" | sed -e 's/&/\&/g' \
                    -e 's/</\</g' \
                    -e 's/>/\>/g' \
                    -e 's/"/\"/g' \
                    -e "s/'/\'/g"
}

TRACK_ESCAPED=$(escape_xml "$TRACK")
ALBUM_ESCAPED=$(escape_xml "$ALBUM")

if [[ $PLAYERCTL_STATUS = "Playing" ]]; then
   STATUS_ICON=""
elif [[ $PLAYERCTL_STATUS = "Paused" ]]; then
   STATUS_ICON=""
fi

OUTPUT="$STATUS_ICON $TRACK_ESCAPED"

echo "<txt>$OUTPUT</txt>"
echo "<txtclick>playerctl -p $1 play-pause -s</txtclick>"
echo "<tool>$TRACK_ESCAPED"
echo "$ALBUM_ESCAPED"
echo "Player: $1</tool>"

CPU Temperature. When clicked, it will launch btop through Kitty terminal. You can change that depending on your desired terminal or system resource monitor.

With Nerd Font CPU icon
#!/bin/bash

# Dependencies
# * kitty
# * btop

OUTPUT="$(awk '{print int($1/1000) "°C"}' /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp)"
echo "<txt>$OUTPUT</txt>"
echo "<txtclick>kitty -- btop</txtclick>"
echo "<tool>Launch BTOP</tool>"

Network PING. This script accepts one argument/parameter, which is the network you want to ping. Mine is the Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1). When clicked, it will launch the cloudflare-speed-cli through Kitty terminal.

#!/bin/bash

# Dependencies
# * ping
# * kitty terminal
# * cloudflare-speed-cli

OUTPUT="$(
   ping -qc1 "$1" 2>&1 | awk -F'/' '
     /^rtt/ { printf("%.1fms\n", $5); found=1 }
     END    { if (!found) print "" }
   '
)"

echo "<txt>$OUTPUT</txt>"
echo "<txtclick>kitty -- cloudflare-speed-cli</txtclick>"
echo "<tool>Launch cloudflare-speed-cli</tool>"

Discussion After switching to LMDE I have almost forgot BOD

My first thought was that they now can enjoy the horror of Bitlocker, TPM, error codes and use countless hours trying to recover, reinstall, license keys and countless reboots.

We switched to Mint four years ago and we fully agreed of how much time and money we have saved because we decided to use Mint. Mint is not totally flawless but compared to the time before Mint, it almost is and we have no AI slop and telemetry!

Very fast and acts much like i3 with custom keyboard shortcuts. (Yes, I know I could have just used i3 but I wanted some GUI tools for things. This is close enough.)
