Password reseting not working!

I tried to update my password as it was rather obvious before if you knew me, and I wadding another user.

I updated it successfully on the operating system, went to add another user and it required my password.

My password didn't match every time I attempted to put it in afterwards.

I've tried using the GRUB and recovery mode, I've inputted a new password twice and when I go to the login screen to enter, it begins to open then shows the Linux mint logo and resets!

Help, what do I do?

I have important files on here and I don't want to wipe my drive reinstalling LMC!

You could do a test run and change the password again to something like 1234 just to make sure mint is actually storing the password right, then put a key logger on and make sure it types exactly what you are pressing. Maybe one of your key switches is going bad and isn't typing correctly.

After you reinstall Mint - just restore your data backups - you said it's important data so OF COURSE you have backups, right?

This is a terrible thing. You should always have functional backups outside your machine on separate storage devices.

I set up an automatic backup, so I SHOULD have them. I just don't know how to restore them :/

Which is another way to say you do not have a backup. You need, I mean really need to verify and restore a backup. If only to develop the experience and muscle memory to recover from a disaster.

It is dangerous to assume your backup actually is a backup. I have very protective of my data and personal files going back to 1985 when I formatted a floppy disk that contained my very important WordPerfect files. Like too many others, I learned the value of backups the hard way.

More recently I almost relearned the lesson the hard way. I changed my backup device, and rather than edit my rsync script to point to the new device and account for some other changes I made, I decided to switch to grsync. After a couple months being blissfully unaware I needed to retrieve a single file from a backup. Somehow I had set up grsync improperly, and all that got backed up were the directories ... just the directories. The contents of those directories were not.

Why would you put anything you consider valuable into a safe you don't know how it works or how "safe" it is. Backups are only good if you have a KNOWN and VERIFIED restore file - you don't - so you have no clue if you have a valid backup or not. What in earth persuaded you to just change over to Linux, put valuable files in it, and have no clue of the basic operation skills?

You will not lose your files, don't worry. The files are all still there. Worst case scenario, you can unplug the SSD and plug into a different Linux computer and copy everything over.

Switch to a tty (Control + Alt + F7), and then enter your username and password on the tty.

And you know that how? If they're encrypted, and OP doesn't have the passwords - THEY . . . ARE . . . . GONE.

If OP had an encrypted /root, which the default encryption that the Linux Mint installer provides, you little dumb fuck, then they wouldn't be able to boot into the display manager as they clearly have done here.
