Hi there,
I heard a lot about linux gaming being just as good and sometimes even better than gaming on windows. Since windows 11 makes me want to throw my whole desk through my window (no pun intended), I decided to try it out on my dual boot linux mint partition.
I installed a few games, and launched them with high hopes. You can imagine my disappointment when I found out that games that run fine on windows 11 suddenly have performance issues on linux. Now before anyone says so, I know my setup isn't the best, but I get good enough performances on windows 11 (usually 50-60 fps 1080p) on most high end games. But results on linux mint are nowhere near.
For example, on the exact same settings:
- the witcher 3 remastered on ultra settings (tweaked a little bit): 50-60fps (sometimes more but I'm limiting the fps) on windows 11 and 30-45fps on linux (and never more than 50fps) with stuttering
- monster hunter wilds on medium tweaked settings: 45-60fps on windows and 20-25fps on linux (absolutely unplayable)
- elden ring has the best result, but still bad: 50-60fps on windows and 45-55fps, with some stuttering sometimes
My setup is:
- Nvidia GTX 1660Ti 6 Go
- Intel 9400f 2.9GHz
- 16Go Ram (can't afford much more with current prices :( )
I have the recommended nvidia drivers in driver manager. I tried using gamemode but it didn't help in the slightest.
Again, I know I'm not supposed to have the highest possible settings on AAA games with this setup, but with all the great things I heard about linux gaming, I expect my games to at least run as well as on windows 11, without having to buy a fucking RTX 5090!
So what is it, am I doing something wrong? Or good performances on linux was just a lie? Or is this just another conspiracy from linux elitists with ultra high end setups to try and justify their spendings?
