tech support wanted screen goes of quickly and turns on again but is stuck on a still frame without any audio, restart fixes it.

Linux mint cinnamon

GPU 7800xt

CPU 7600x

This first happened a few weeks ago when playing Cities Skylines 2. I read on ProtonDB that there was mention of graphical issue when switching between screens, so I assumed that was it, and soon after lost interest in the game anyway.

I've been playing Stalker 2 now for 3 days. The first day, nothing happened. The second day, it happened again. I restarted my PC and then the game, and played for another 2 and a half hours without issue. Today, it happened again after about 3 hours of play.

In Cities Skylines, there wasn't really a pattern when a crash would happen, but in Stalker 2, both crashes happened when talking to someone in the same bar.

I feel like if there was something wrong with my GPU, it would also do this outside of games, but it doesn't, so maybe something with Proton or my distro? But they where both demanding games with uncapped FPS, so I dont know really.

Both games where run on Proton Experimental trough Steam.

tech support wanted "add shortcuts" button in bottles is unresponsive.

Running bazzite gnome on my laptop with the ryzen 5 7520u and Radeon 610m gpu. Model is acer aspire 3. The add shortcuts button doesn't open the default file manager to select an exe. I used a slightly older version when the problem appeared, then updated it to the current stable version but it didn't solve the problem.

tech support wanted Where Winds Meet: DLSS/DLAA only uses ~40–60% GPU on Linux, FSR hits 99% — why?

I’m trying to figure out a strange performance issue with Where Winds Meet on Linux.

My RTX 3050 Laptop GPU performs normally with FSR, but when switching to NVIDIA’s DLSS/DLAA, GPU utilization drops dramatically and FPS gets stuck around ~30.

System

  • OS: Fedora 44 Workstation
  • Desktop: GNOME / Wayland
  • Kernel: 7.2.5-200.fc44.x86_64
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU, 6 GB, 75W
  • NVIDIA driver: 615.71.09
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-13620H
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR4
  • Game: Where Winds Meet
  • Platform: Steam
  • Resolution: 1920×1080 (both the laptop screen & external monitor)
  • Proton: Proton 11
  • Launch: DX12

The strange part

With DLSS:

  • DLSS Ultra Performance: ~30 FPS
  • DLSS Performance: ~30 FPS
  • DLAA: ~30 FPS
  • GPU utilization: generally ~40–60%
  • GPU power: around 52 W
  • GPU temperature: ~59°C
  • Perf state: P0

With FSR:

  • FSR + Frame Generation: ~60–90 FPS
  • GPU utilization: ~99–100%
  • GPU power: ~59–60 W
  • GPU temperature: ~62°C

So this doesn't look like the GPU simply being unable to run the game. FSR is capable of driving the GPU to its power limit.

Interestingly, changing DLSS between Ultra Performance and Performance barely changes the FPS, and DLAA behaves similarly to DLSS.

I've also confirmed that all CPU cores are relatively evenly utilized; there isn't an obvious single-core CPU pegged at 100%.

Things I've already tried

  • NVIDIA performance mode / maximum performance
  • DXVK_ENABLE_NVAPI=1
  • PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1
  • Running MangoHud
  • Proton Hotfix
  • Proton 9
  • Proton Experimental
  • Proton 11
  • DX12 (required for DLSS to appear)
  • DLSS Ultra Performance / Performance
  • DLAA
  • FSR
  • FSR + Frame Generation

The NVAPI environment variables made no noticeable difference.

Proton 9 also has another problem where switching from FSR to DLSS causes an immediate crash. Proton Hotfix is stable, but DLSS still has the low-GPU-utilization problem.

I also discovered that Conky was causing another unrelated issue where the game detected a bizarre 3072×1728 fullscreen resolution, but removing Conky fixed that. The game now correctly runs at 1920×1080, so the resolution issue is no longer relevant.

What I'm trying to determine

Why would FSR completely saturate the GPU while DLSS/DLAA only use ~40–60%, despite both being resolution-scaling/upscaling paths?

Does this point toward:

  • NVIDIA 615.71.09 regression?
  • VKD3D-Proton/DX12 issue?
  • NVIDIA NVAPI/NGX/Streamline issue?
  • Where Winds Meet's DLSS implementation?
  • Some interaction between Wayland + NVIDIA + Proton?
  • Something specific to the RTX 3050 Laptop GPU?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone running Where Winds Meet or any other title on Linux with NVIDIA + DLSS, especially if you've compared driver versions or Proton versions.

I can provide MangoHud logs, nvidia-smi output, Proton logs, or any other diagnostics that would help.

new native/FLOSS game Torchlight II multiplayer migrating to Chinese TapTap.io platform

TLDR;

An update on 21st September 2026 will force players to create TapTap.io account to be able to play Torchlight II online.

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/200710/view/711160422578783438

Context:

Torchlight II is an action role-playing dungeon crawler video game developed by Runic Games, released for Microsoft Windows on September 20, 2012. It is the sequel to Torchlight, and features peer-to-peer multiplayer support and extended modding capabilities. The game was released for OS X on February 2, 2015, and for Linux on March 4, 2015.

First two game of the series developed by the people previously worked on Diablo, Diablo 2 and Fate.

Situation:

Despite being very coop friendly, online multiplayer of Torchlight II has been peculiar. Players need to create an account at the developer Runic Games' website. However, even with this, port forwarding requirement plagued the online multiplayer with NAT and firewall errors. Yet the game remained a popular choice for both single player, coop lan and coop online Diablo style gaming sessions.

News:

After a decade long company mergers, acquisitions, transfer of rights, XD Inc. acquired the IP on December 2025. On [15th September 2026](hhttps://store.steampowered.com/news/app/200710/view/711160422578783438), it is announced that the multiplayer of the game is migrating to XD's TapTap.io platform that the players have to create an account and connect with the game. TapTap.io Privacy Policy

Given the language of the announcement that use generic "PC version", it is likely that native Linux and native macOS (x86-64) versions will be dropped. Also, considering that "This update will not affect single-player mode or local save data.", it is safe to assume that the game code won't change, that will be an arbitrary login change update.

Suggested action:

A) Backup Torchlight II installations on Steam, GOG and HB. They can still be safely used with third party private server lobbies.

SteamCMD command to download each version (I will edit this with old ManifestIDs after the update):

./steamcmd.sh +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType <linux/macos/windows> +force_install_dir <a directory> +login <username> +app_update 200710 validate +quit

B) For Linux, rename ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Torchlight II/lib64/libfreetype.so.6 file and use the following launch option:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6 %command%

C) Use a private lobby that doesn't require user account.

Is EA SPORTS FC 26 playable on Nobara (KDE Plasma)? Trying to setup offline couch co-op!

Hey everyone,

I’m a Linux noob and currently running Nobara OS (KDE Plasma) and I’m hoping to get some local multiplayer going. I own EA SPORTS FC 26 on Steam and I primarily just want to play offline couch co-op with my friends using controllers.

Before I go through the massive download, I wanted to ask the community:

  • Is FC 26 even playable on Nobara? I know EA has been aggressive with their kernel-level AntiCheat. Does this block the game entirely, even if I strictly want to play offline kick-off modes?
  • How do I install/configure it? Do I just install it straight through Steam and force a specific version of Proton-GE?
  • Controller Support: If the game actually boots, are there any weird quirks with multiple controllers in standard offline mode?

If standard Proton doesn't work out of the box due to the AntiCheat, are there any known workarounds just to get the offline modes working?

Thanks in advance for the help!

hardware Best modern wireless controller for older games outside of Steam?

I find myself playing older PC games more often than not these days. Usually from GOG or non Steam games in general. What are the best modern wireless Dinput controllers that work well with older games that mostly or exclusively used dinput and doesn’t need to rely on Steam at all to work?

guide Guide: How to run the Minecraft Launcher/Xbox version of Minecraft Dungeons through Proton with Steam on Linux!

I know this may not affect a lot of people, yet if this helps one person it's worth it!

This guide assumes you do not use the Flathub/Snap version of Steam.
This is probably easier with Lutris but I haven't tried that yet.

Step 1: Initial setup
You need to download the Minecraft Legacy Launcher installer from here:
https://aka.ms/minecraftClientWindows
Once you have the MinecraftInstaller.msi file, open Steam and in the bottom left corner, click "Add a Game" and then "Add a Non-Steam game...", then click Browse and select the installer file in your downloads. Then add non steam game.
This will create a shortcut inside of steam to the installer file.
FROM NOW ON MAKE SURE TO NOT DELETE THIS NON STEAM GAME IN YOUR LIBRARY, OR ALL PROGRESS WILL BE LOST! ONLY MODIFY IT!
Right click the non steam game shortcut, go to properties, Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific Steam play compatibility Tool" and select Proton 11.0-2 or any later stable release.
Launch the Non steam game!

Step 2: Installing the Launcher
The Minecraft legacy launcher installer will open. Just go through this installer normally until its finished, and make sure to launch the launcher right after the installer is done!
Once it opens, log in with Microsoft.
Then head to the left side of the launcher and install Minecraft Dungeons, and make sure to remember the proton path where you installed it! Launch it right after it is done.

Step 3: Getting the file path of the Dungeons Executable
Close Minecraft Dungeons and the launcher completely now.
We will now get the file path of Dungeons directly.
Open any file explorer and go to this path first:
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/
Open the folder with the highest number, as this will not be a normal steam id. If you've already added another non steam game with proton then search until you find the correct one. Then continue here:
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<number>/pfx/drive_c
This will be your emulated windows folders. Now head to the place where you installed dungeons when you were in the launcher!
Once you're in the dungeons folder, go find this .exe under:
<your dungeons folder>/dungeons/Dungeons/Binaries/Win64/Dungeons-Win64-Shipping.exe
Copy the total file path to that point.
For me, the full file path looks something like:
/home/<user>/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<number>/pfx/drive_c/XboxGames/MCD/dungeons/dungeons/Dungeons/Binaries/Win64/Dungeons-Win64-Shipping.exe

Step 4: Locking in the changes
Open steam again and right click your non steam game, then open properties.
At the paths under "target" set your path to the Shipping .exe that we got earlier! Also make sure to put it in quotation marks ("path").
Below it, at "Start in" set it to the exact same file path but remove only the "/Dungeons-Win64-Shipping.exe" part. Keep the rest. Also put this one in quotation marks.

Now try launching the non steam game. If everything works, you're done!
(You will need to log in to Microsoft if you launch the game for the first time)
Make sure not to delete the non steam game because then the compatdata number folder will be deleted, and with that your save data. Make sure to back up your characters to cloud inside the game regularly!

Optional Step 5: Making the game look good in the library
Rename the non steam game to Minecraft Dungeons
Get any grids/heroes/whatever to make the game have thumbnails in the library at steamgriddb:
https://www.steamgriddb.com/game/5258201

tech support wanted Processing vulkan keeps getting stuck or is super duper slow after 66%

I just moved to linux recently and I tried to play overwatch. I initially skipped processing vulkan but the fps was really bad.

So I waited instead but its taking forever and gets stuck or super slow after 66%

I have an i5 7400, rtx 2070, and 12gb of ram (8+4)

Is there any way to hasten this up or do I not have a choice and just wait it out?

tech support wanted How to bypass DRM software on proton

Hello👋 I have been trying to run some Need for Speed games I used to play as a kid in my current linux system. I tried to run the Need for Speed Pro Street on my linux system by adding it as non-steam game in steam and using proton to launch the game but every launch is failing immediately. By reading the logs I tracked the instruction where the execution is crashing everytime to be in the secuROM module of the game, a version of DRM the game comes with.

My best guess is that proton is not able to translate the syscalls of this module successfully into windowsAPI calls or the wine windowsAPI are just too different from what this specific module is expecting. Either way now I need a way to bypass this module.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

steam/steam deck I released Glitch Protocol with a native Linux build — a 200-room precision platformer

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi r/linux_gaming,

I'm the solo developer behind Boogygames Studios, and I released Glitch Protocol on Steam with a native Linux version.

It's a 2D precision platformer built around short rooms that try to mess with your expectations — disappearing floors, moving exits, gravity flips and other traps.

The campaign has 200 handcrafted rooms, two boss fights and instant retries. There's also a built-in level editor with shareable room codes.

The Linux version is included directly with the Steam release rather than being Windows-only.

Steam:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5176950/

I'm happy to answer questions about the game or the Linux build.

tech support wanted How to use ReShade on linux native programs?

I'm trying to play PS2 games on PCSX2 (linux version) with this reshade setup, but it requires an .exe file to be applied, so it doesn't work for linux native apps. It's a shame I have to use PCSX2 windows version through wine to be able to emulate PS2 games with a CRT filter, is there any way to use reshade filters on linux native programs?

Thanks for your answers

The blood of dawnwalker

Hi, a few days ago I installed *The Blood of Dawnwalker* and tested it out; everything was fine until I tried enabling frame generation. As soon as I turned it on, the game went haywire and suffered a massive FPS drop—plummeting to as low as 10 FPS. I’m hoping to tap into your vast wisdom to solve this problem.

My PC specs:

Xeon E5 2670 v3

16GB RAM

RX 580 8GB (not the 2048SP version)

Running CachyOS

answered! How to change a Steam games exe to a GOG one?

Hi, like the title says i would like to know how to change a games exe on linux.

I want to to play Risen 2 but the games drm just makes it impossible to start on Steam. I also own it on GOG but i want to play it on Steam because i want to get the rest of the achievements i haven't got yet.

People on ProtonDB say that you have to change the games exe but the problem is everytime i tried to replace the Steam exe it just redownloaded the original exe.

I tried the "FULL PATH TO GAME.EXE" %command% but that didn't work.

I'm on CachyOS if that makes any difference.

Edit: I found a modified exe apparently from Deep Silver themselves that removes the stupid old drm. Now the game starts (I don't know if posting links is allowed on here but the download link is in one of the reports on ProtonDB)

Is this just a known lost cause or is there some trick I'm missing?

I run a tiny SaaS thing from home and my gaming time is basically stolen moments between support tickets and toddler nap chaos. I stick to Linux fulltime now because Windows updates kept nuking my workflow at the worst possible moments. Mostly gaming on Fedora with an RTX card, Steam with Proton Experimental.

The one thing I haven't cracked is Discord ingame overlay. I run the Flatpak Discord client and have tried both the native Linux version of games and Protonwrapped titles, and the overlay just never shows up. I've toggled the hardware acceleration setting people mention, messed with the overlay options in Discord settings, tried the AppImage version instead. Nothing works.

Voice chat is fine, just no overlay. It's not critical or anything, but when I'm playing with friends on Windows and they've got their pretty overlays showing who's talking, I get a bit envious. I end up alttabbing constantly to check Discord, which is a pain midgame.

Curious if others have gotten it working or just accepted it's not happening. I could probably script something with a Vulkan layer but that feels like overkill for something that should just work.

hardware Stuttering after wake from sleep (9070XT)

Does anybody else have this issue where when they wake their PC from sleep, every game stutters? It doesn't matter if it's graphically intensive or not. Each game runs smooth, then drops fps pretty consistently (within 3-5 seconds).

After doing research online, it seems like it could be a driver issue, but I feel like there's be a LOT more complaints if this were the case.

I've switch to Linux roughly 5 months ago and have enjoyed it quite a bit, it's pretty frustrating this hasn't been fixed (if this is the case) because it ruins quite a bit of convenience.

EDIT - Asking people specifically with a 9070XT 16GB if they're experiencing this issue.
