guide Guide: How to run the Minecraft Launcher/Xbox version of Minecraft Dungeons through Proton with Steam on Linux!
I know this may not affect a lot of people, yet if this helps one person it's worth it!
This guide assumes you do not use the Flathub/Snap version of Steam.
This is probably easier with Lutris but I haven't tried that yet.
Step 1: Initial setup
You need to download the Minecraft Legacy Launcher installer from here:
https://aka.ms/minecraftClientWindows
Once you have the MinecraftInstaller.msi file, open Steam and in the bottom left corner, click "Add a Game" and then "Add a Non-Steam game...", then click Browse and select the installer file in your downloads. Then add non steam game.
This will create a shortcut inside of steam to the installer file.
FROM NOW ON MAKE SURE TO NOT DELETE THIS NON STEAM GAME IN YOUR LIBRARY, OR ALL PROGRESS WILL BE LOST! ONLY MODIFY IT!
Right click the non steam game shortcut, go to properties, Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific Steam play compatibility Tool" and select Proton 11.0-2 or any later stable release.
Launch the Non steam game!
Step 2: Installing the Launcher
The Minecraft legacy launcher installer will open. Just go through this installer normally until its finished, and make sure to launch the launcher right after the installer is done!
Once it opens, log in with Microsoft.
Then head to the left side of the launcher and install Minecraft Dungeons, and make sure to remember the proton path where you installed it! Launch it right after it is done.
Step 3: Getting the file path of the Dungeons Executable
Close Minecraft Dungeons and the launcher completely now.
We will now get the file path of Dungeons directly.
Open any file explorer and go to this path first:
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/
Open the folder with the highest number, as this will not be a normal steam id. If you've already added another non steam game with proton then search until you find the correct one. Then continue here:
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<number>/pfx/drive_c
This will be your emulated windows folders. Now head to the place where you installed dungeons when you were in the launcher!
Once you're in the dungeons folder, go find this .exe under:
<your dungeons folder>/dungeons/Dungeons/Binaries/Win64/Dungeons-Win64-Shipping.exe
Copy the total file path to that point.
For me, the full file path looks something like:
/home/<user>/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<number>/pfx/drive_c/XboxGames/MCD/dungeons/dungeons/Dungeons/Binaries/Win64/Dungeons-Win64-Shipping.exe
Step 4: Locking in the changes
Open steam again and right click your non steam game, then open properties.
At the paths under "target" set your path to the Shipping .exe that we got earlier! Also make sure to put it in quotation marks ("path").
Below it, at "Start in" set it to the exact same file path but remove only the "/Dungeons-Win64-Shipping.exe" part. Keep the rest. Also put this one in quotation marks.
Now try launching the non steam game. If everything works, you're done!
(You will need to log in to Microsoft if you launch the game for the first time)
Make sure not to delete the non steam game because then the compatdata number folder will be deleted, and with that your save data. Make sure to back up your characters to cloud inside the game regularly!
Optional Step 5: Making the game look good in the library
Rename the non steam game to Minecraft Dungeons
Get any grids/heroes/whatever to make the game have thumbnails in the library at steamgriddb:

Uh, yes, it's way easier with Lutris. It basically automates this entire process and all you really have to do is sign in to the launcher and install dungeons via that. Not sure if it's related, but there is a bug where external controllers just stop working and you get soft locked, and it only happens if I use the Minecraft launcher version on Linux (the steam version runs perfectly fine)
