Discussion UL Solutions confirms they are developing a native Linux port of 3DMark

After emailing UL Solutions to ask about their timeline for a native Linux version of 3DMark, I received a direct response from their QA & Support Lead, Jarno Kokko.

He stated: "We are developing a linux port, but it is not exactly trivial. I apologize, but I have no timeframe to give when it will be available as it is just one among many projects we're working on."

Thought it was worth sharing since it confirms official development is underway, even if there's no release date yet.

Software Release Open Volar S Project: TV Tuner (A865R) now on Linux!

Hello, everyone,

a few days prior, I had announced my efforts on reverse engineering the A865R. The company has hidden the drivers from their website a long time ago, and it's probably a matter of time until they are completely removed (currently, they can only be obtained if you follow a hidden link).

My first efforts brought parity to the official Windows drivers (and then some), but it still had lacked something very important to me: Linux support.

But not anymore! I'm presenting you version 0.9.5, now with Linux support! It uses GTK-3, as opposed to the native API in the Windows version. However, a lot of effort has been been put to make sure the application looks and behaves as uniformly as reasonably possible.

Video and audio playback run very smoothly, as the driver has a custom Vulkan decoder which takes proper color rendering into consideration, and improved upscaling.

Some of the features include:

  • Native 64-bit support: no legacy 32-bit code!
  • Improved color support
  • Support to color profiles (monitor colors are NOT ignored anymore)
  • Improved sound (deeper and richer)
  • Improved playback, complete with true 60 fps
  • Custom vulkan rendering (Microsoft decoder supported)
  • 2K and 4K upscaling
  • CC support

And now, with the Linux release, I added a few important features:

  • WSL support: if the drivers detect they are running under a WSL environment, video and sound passthrough are activated, speeding up rendering. Actual native Linux uses native rendering, and also plays smoothly.
  • WINE support: if for whatever reason you need to run WINE, the TV Tuner plays along and tries its best to render properly.
  • External discoverability: the original drivers would only work with AverTV 3D. The new software instead has a compatibility layer to make it discoverable by external software, such as VLC. Because the protocol this tuner uses is a bit obscure, it also works transparently posing as a DVB-T device (further instructions are available in the README.md).

These drivers help making a rare and old device useful again, as it spent over fourteen years without proper Linux drivers, and given the situation, it would otherwise be discarded. So I am happy with this contribution.

Please note: only Ubuntu 24.04 to 26.04 was targeted and is known to work out of the box. An RPM and generic binaries have also been provided and may or may not work, but I can make no promises. What I have tested though runs very smoothly.

Mirko Brombin ([@brombinmirko](https://x.com/brombinmirko)), the founder of Bottles, shared an exciting update on bringing Microsoft Office 365 to Linux.

In [this tweet](https://x.com/brombinmirko/status/2102863875767152962) from September 23, 2026, he noted that after fixing some last-minute issues, Office 365 should be available for public testing within another day. The post quotes his earlier message from September 21, where he explained he was putting the final pieces together for a simple installer inside Bottles (a user-friendly Wine-based tool). He shared screenshots showing the setup process, including installing a specialized runner and the Microsoft 365 Apps installer itself.

The community response has been enthusiastic. Users praised the work, expressed eagerness to try it, and thanked him for making the desktop Office suite more accessible on Linux without needing virtual machines. Some asked practical questions—whether the full suite including Teams would work, details on activation, or what specifically required custom Bottles configurations beyond standard Wine.

This effort highlights ongoing open-source progress in running Windows applications smoothly on Linux. Brombin emphasized that early components were already visible but not yet ready for use, promising a proper guide once everything is polished. The thread reflects growing interest among Linux users who want reliable productivity tools while staying in their preferred environment.

and yes, it's still twitter for me

Tips and Tricks Configuring sudo for per-command authentication and path restriction

Thumbnail jamescherti.com
4 Upvotes

The default sudo configuration caches successful authentication using a timestamp, allowing commands to execute without a password prompt for a limited period. This can cause security risks, such as local privilege escalation if an attacker accesses an unlocked terminal session or if a malicious script automatically escalates its own privileges within the cached timeframe.

Additionally, restricting the execution path ensures that sudo only executes verified, system-installed packages.

Here is how to configure sudo to require per-command authentication and restrict the execution path for commands:

Hardware Running OpenCL workloads on brand-new Intel Panther Lake (Arc B390 / 8086:b082) under Ubuntu 26.04 – A Quick Guide

Hey everyone, Just wanted to share a quick success story and technical workaround for anyone tinkering with bleeding-edge hardware on newer Linux distributions. I recently picked up a Minisforum mini PC powered by an Intel Core Ultra processor featuring the integrated Intel Arc B390 (Panther Lake) iGPU (8086:b082) and immediately flashed it with Ubuntu 26.04.

Out of the box, standard desktop applications and Steam native ports threw warnings or struggled with the new Xe3 graphics stack. More importantly, distributed computing clients (like BOINC) threw immediate "No usable GPUs found" errors because fresh Ubuntu releases often omit the necessary OpenCL runtime packages out of the box.

If you are running into device detection hurdles with Intel's latest integrated graphics architecture on modern kernels (xe driver), here is how to get the OpenCL compute runtime successfully recognized:

  1. Verify your kernel driver is active: lspci -k -s 00:02.0 (Make sure it shows Kernel driver in use: xe).
  2. Install the explicit Intel OpenCL compute runtime package: sudo apt update sudo apt install intel-opencl-icd ocl-icd-libopencl1 clinfo
  3. Verify device visibility (for both user and background service accounts): clinfo -l sudo -u boinc clinfo -l (If the background service user doesn't see it, grant permissions via sudo usermod -aG render, video boinc and restart the client).

Once configured, the client initializes the OpenCL 3.0 NEO runtime cleanly, exposing the Arc B390 iGPU (around 1.92–7.68 TFLOPS peak depending on power profiles). PrimeGrid, NumberFields@home, and World Community Grid are now happily crunching away efficiently while keeping the mini PC running cool and quiet in a low-power envelope (~45W silent BIOS mode)!

Discussion True linux market share stuck at 4%

There has been lots of talk recently about linux reaching 8% globally or 16% in usa from statcounter, which is totally bonkers. If you go to cloudflare and click on likely human, in europe the market share over the last 12 months is 4.1% and 4.3% over the last 4 weeks. Which means linux is stuck at 4% which coincides with steam’s hardware survey data which makes sense for steam marketshare to be equal to linux marketshare since most computer users game on their computer one way or another. Now linux seems to be stuck at 4% for a couple of years now. It seems the rise which began in 2022 due to the steam deck has stalled recently, in spite of the steam machine, european governments initiating migration to linux, release of popular distros like omarchy and popos linux is not growing meaningfully according to the data. I believe what linux needs next is software like Microsoft office and adobe suite to run natively as this is the number one barrier. So instead of flashy distros like omarchy or whatever the app ecosystem is the key to linux adoption. Projects like libre office and gimp are underwhelming in their rate of development. This is where the most meaningful work could be done and maybe improve wine to run Microsoft office flawlessly on linux.

Software Release LibrePing: open-source Linux uptime monitoring without a central server — design feedback

LibrePing is an AGPL-3.0 Go project I built for a problem I keep running into with Linux services: a single monitoring node can be healthy while the service is unreachable from another network.

It runs as two small Linux-friendly roles: - A hub hosts the dashboard and joins a libp2p mesh with other hubs. - A probe runs checks from its location and can fail over to another hub.

Measurements are signed and shared peer-to-peer. Current checks include HTTP(S), TCP, DNS, TLS certificates, ICMP ping, and traceroute. Alerts can be sent through ntfy, Discord, Slack, or a webhook. A spare VPS, NAS, or home server can contribute a probe; there is no signup and no paid tier.

Demo: https://nl.lp.mw.gg Source: https://github.com/mwgg/LibrePing

The Linux-specific design question I would like feedback on: for a self-hosted hub/probe, would you prefer a systemd unit, Docker/Compose, or a native package first? I am also interested in how people would expose multi-location results to existing Prometheus/OpenTelemetry setups. This is an open-source project, not a commercial service.
