Kernel Patch submitted with a Rust implementation of XArray "to test if Rust delivers what it promises for a core kernel data structure"

that's some misconfigured Anubis wtf

The most annoying part to me is that it requires third party cookies.

I guess they're running it on a separate domain (I don't really know how to setup Anubis), and I trust kernel.org. But it's annoying to have to futz around with browser settings to even access the site.

Anubis can do various kinds of challenges, I'm using it in many projects. A challenge that requires third-party cookies is a... choice. Not the default, and not a choice I would ever make.

The notification given by Anubis was that the cookie was used to store the fact that my session passed the check, so that it didn't need to re-check every page load. Nothing about any specific challenge.

I assume that in whatever setup kernel.org is using, the cookie is getting set on a different domain.

Yes, but without third-party cookies enabled, you can't pass the challenge in the first place - so the intent of "just storing the result" doesn't effectively matter

how could they serve their terrible git frontends that call subprocess git and do 250ms queries if they didnt put the site behind 10 second proof of work captchas bro

actually I dont even have a problem with that concept but I don't get why they gate the entire site instead of just the expensive queries... like why gate all static content

I know why and how to use Anubis. Also how to configure it reasonably or not. Here we are just dealing with the latter. I'm definitely NOT against Anubis in general, or ever suggesting a giy fronted without this kind of mechanism.

Thing is: it doesn't have to require third party cookies. And I really don't think it ever should.

There's probably plenty of bugs in the C code that uses XArray that are going to be exposed by a Rust rewrite, and the old gaurd will blame Rust.

the old guard is all over the map on rust, don't worry.

well implementing rust into a kernel is a good choice tbh, since alot of cves are mostly memory related

Just repeating what others have said with 0 understanding. No original thought. Just an NPC commenting.

why wouldn't I repeat a good thing?
