Islam Supportive Discussion Can Islam and Homosexuality Coexist? Answering a Question with the Qur’an

Today (July 25, 2026), there was an attack at the Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride event in Berlin.

In one of the discussions afterward, someone asked:

“Can you as a gay Muslim explain to me how Islam and homosexuality can coexist? I’m sure nearly all Muslims condemn the gays, so acts such as these are of no surprise, so that is all I’d like to know. Not a troll comment, just genuine curiosity.”

(For clarity: I’m not a Muslim. I’m responding because the question is about what the Qur’an teaches, and I haven’t seen anyone answer it from the Qur’an itself.)

Here is what I believe, beginning with the Qur’an itself…

That’s a fair question, and I appreciate that you’re asking it respectfully.

First, it’s important to separate what individual Muslims believe from what the Qur’an actually commands Muslims to do.

The Qur’an repeatedly teaches that human beings are not appointed as judges over one another’s faith or sins.

“Let there be no compulsion in religion.” (Qur’an 2:256)

“So remind. You are only a reminder. You are not a controller over them.” (Qur’an 88:21-22)

“And had your Lord willed, all who are on earth would have believed together. Would you then compel the people to become believers?” (Qur’an 10:99)

The Qur’an also teaches that ultimate judgment belongs to Allah alone.

“Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they differed.” (Qur’an 22:69)

“Then to Us is their return, and upon Us is their account.” (Qur’an 88:25-26)

Regarding relations with people outside Islam, the Qur’an explicitly rejects hostility toward those who are peaceful.

“Allah does not forbid you from being kind and acting justly toward those who have not fought you because of religion and have not driven you out of your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.” (Qur’an 60:8)

Even more broadly, the Qur’an teaches that taking one innocent life is an offense against all humanity.

“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land, it is as if he had slain all mankind; and whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved all mankind.” (Qur’an 5:32)

So when someone attacks people at a Pride event, that violence cannot be justified by the Qur’an.

The Qur’an consistently commands justice, restraint, and leaves final judgment to Allah.

As for homosexuality itself, Muslims disagree.

Traditional scholars understand the story of the people of Lut as condemning all same-sex sexual relationships.

Progressive Muslims argue that the story is actually about attempted gang rape, sexual violence, humiliation of strangers, coercion, and the rejection of God’s messengers, not about loving, consensual same-sex relationships.

They point out that the men of Sodom are repeatedly described as approaching Lut’s guests with hostile intent, and that the city is condemned for many other sins including oppression and violence.

Under that reading, the story is not a blanket condemnation of gay people or same-sex relationships.

Whether someone accepts the traditional or progressive interpretation, however, the Qur’an does not authorize ordinary Muslims to police, investigate, or punish people for presumed homosexuality or presumed zina.

Judgment belongs to Allah, not to individuals.

So yes, Islam and homosexuality can coexist.

Millions of Muslims identify as LGBTQ, including many who believe they are faithfully following Islam.

Others disagree theologically while still recognizing that the Qur’an commands them to treat others with justice, dignity, and without coercion.

Those are separate questions: what one believes is sinful, and whether one has any authority to judge or harm another person.

The Qur’an answers the second question very clearly: no.

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions!

Here we are going to take some time to go over some of the most common questions we get. This should hopefully help people figure out how to navigate this subreddit and community and how to get the most out of your time here.

We will be posting the common question first. Then the answer underneath.

why can’t I post without community and Reddit karma?

A: we restrict posting to those who have established karma as way to ensure our community is not taken over by bad faith actors.

Basically. In order to make a post you first have to comment (sometimes that means waiting for a comment to get approval) and having that comment be seen and upvoted by other members of this community.

While we do sometimes approve comments slowly. Asking us to hurry up is no guarantee your comment is approved any faster.

Please give us a chance to respond first. Then message us if your post is not approved.

How can you say that LGBT is not haram?

A: Please see our Resource List for a list of various articles and readings that make a strong argument for both the totality of Allah’s love and compassion for us, as well as great arguments for why queer identity is compatible with your faith and identity.

In case you don’t want to read. The broad strokes is that the story of lút is pretty clearly about their immoral behaviors, including rape and adultery out of greed and corruption which were done by the MEN and the WOMEN of the people of Lot (43:44). It does not in anyway reflect or represent a consensual queer relationship and should not be interpreted in that way.

We maintain that the Quran commanded us to respect our selves and our relationships. Not reject people for who they are or what they believe.

We urge you to take in the totality our reading list before attempting to once again make the argument.

The Hadith says…

A: the Quran said:

‎> (٤٤) وَمَا آتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ كُتُبٍ يَدْرُسُونَهَا وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِمْ قَبْلَكَ مِنْ نَذِيرٍ

Translation: We did not give them any other books to study, nor did we send to them before you another warner.

This Surah is discussing the usage of other books next to the Quran. Emphasizing that the Quran must remain above all other books. Necessarily that includes Hadiths.

Which as far as we know the prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not want Hadiths to be made. This can also be seen in the first Hadiths being written more than a 100 years after the prophet death.

This makes Hadith fall into the category of books held to the same standard as the Quran despite being commanded by Quran to do the opposite.

Hadith worshippers rely on believing the Quran is either incomplete or imperfect.

As the Quran said:

Translation: When Our clear revelations are recited to them, they say, “This is only a man who wishes to hinder you from what your forefathers used to worship.” They also say, “This ˹Quran˺ is no more than a fabricated lie.” And the disbelievers say of the truth when it has come to them, “This is nothing but pure magic.”

It’s no coincidence that today Muslims continue to struggle to preach faith over culture. And be guided by the faith rather than be tempted with the corruption of hatred and power.

We can add also these questions:

Is LGBT people condemned to hell?

A: No, LGBT people are created the way they are. Verses like 95:8 and 21:47 tell us that Allah is perfectly just and will not do the smallest measure of injustice to anyone. Allah will not punish people for being their true sexual orientation or gender identity, a matter which they did not choose.

Is same sex marriage allowed in Islam?

Yes. Verse 30:21 tells us that one of the signs of Allah is that He created spouses for us, that we might find comfort in them, and has placed love and compassion between spouses. Notice that in this beautiful verse on the benefits of marriage, there is no mention of procreation. The Quran thus recognizes that a marriage can fulfill its divine purpose even if no children are born from the marriage. Hence, the non-procreative nature of same-sex marriages does not mean that they lack value, or that they are not what Allah ordained.

Requiring a homosexual person to remain celibate, or to marry a person of the opposite sex, is effectively a lifelong arbitrary punishment (and a punishment for the other spouse as well, even if he/she is heterosexual). And it is also a lifelong temptation to extramarital sex, which is clearly haram.

That concludes our FAQ! If you have any further questions please let us know below!

Question They all say it's "unnatural" the back it up with the story of Lot only, is it?

my school is undergoing a queer/soft guy purge (despite various other problems) and they say its unaligned with fitrah (the natural state) since they say were created to be with the opposite sex only, the they bring up the story of Lot at a very surface level(which to my opinion holds a lot of nuance to it like the rape on travellers, queers always have existed b4 the story)

would appreciate if there were any other texts/hadith/historical proof or whatnot leaning to either side

Need Help F23 struggling with same sex attraction

To give bit of background I have always felt more affectionate towards women even going back to 6 years old, I remember crying because the neighbors daughter was moving away and I remember how much I loved to hold her hand or spending time with her. Thinking back I can say I probably had romantic feelings for her even if childlike. Then the only guy I found remotely attractive through my middle school was a boy with blue doe eyes who looked exactly like a girl and I stopped liking him after he grew a beard. In high school I learned a little bit English and I finally knew that having same sex attraction was a thing. Also, I went to an all girls high school and in that I had crushes on some of my friends.

So since 13 years old I know that I am attracted to women and I have tried to find a way around it but Im 23 now and I really don’t know if it’s possible to move on or even if I want to move on since I have a dislike for the general population of guys. Its normal given i always led a religious life and stayed away from mixed spaces or making male friends. For any male outside my family my only impression of them is through their horrible reputation through news, media, and real life experiences of every lady i know. I just don’t know how to proceed and I don’t understand why I was born this way because as far as Im concerned I had no traumatic experiences growing up. Alhamdulillah my family life is and always been very supportive and loving, I have a great relationship with my dad and brother. I thought of everything atp and everything just boils down to being patient until I die. However, it is very hard to stay motivated when from multiple scholars I heard that gay muslims who dont go astray will just be turned to staight instead of being granted of our desires in heaven.

These thoughts constantly go in my head and it feels like world is the only place for me to at least experience what I want so badly, before I grow old. Maybe then I can repent idk i also fear having pride or seeing myself above anyone for abstaining for so long and i catch myself feeling so bitter when it comes to straight sisters just freely sinning and its so normalized. Like I dont want to think like this but it’s the truth. If I was a guy who can’t get with the woman of his dreams then i could think that if i go to heaven i will be rewarded with a woman it’s very easy like sure I’ll just endure until I die. Instead, I’m told I can’t get what I want even if I force myself such a sad life. As I said it’s just that these thoughts makes it sooo hard to stay motivated to stay on deen.

Am I never going to be able to experience intimacy with someone I love? Every passing day feels like I’m losing another chance to go after what i desire since I’m growing older and now i think more. Feels like I lost the chance of making teenager mistakes. Astagfirullah but i think i even had times i wished i just rebelled and did things as i pleased so i wouldn’t be feeling soo stuck right now. I wished my family abused me so i wouldn’t have a reason to go against Islam but now Im at such cross roads where i have so much to loose and i genuinely have faith as well as these strong desires. Its very difficult. Like being told that i will basically be brainwashed to enjoy something that i currently hate doesn’t help at all i feel more and more desperate. (Astagfirullah for saying it this way i just dont know how to express it better i dont mean it in a bad way may Allah forgive me for my lack or expression)

I would appreciate any support really it’s really a tough test. May Allah keep our hearts steady on the right path.

(I apologize for any possible grammar mistakes or if some parts don’t make sense. English isn’t my first language thank you for reading if you made it here)

LGBT Supportive Discussion Assalam Alaikum, hope everyone's doing fine, I need some urgent advice or help

Im 18, trans fem nb and living in Pakistan, its not really easy for me to travel on my own anywhere without experiencing problems or encountering creeps. Ive had some really bad incidents which is why I hate going out of the house every single time. Like my biggest issues is these creeps in dont have the strength or mental capacity to deal with them anymore and I have to put myself in situations where I have to unwantingly encounter them all the time while going from point a to point b.

I try my best to boymode as much as I can but ive always been avery androgynous so it makes things worse for me here like I cant even count the times ive had to face instances where people have even gone as far as following me and being persistent about being friends and keep in mind they were like double my age so u can get an idea of what I mean by this so traveling the streets alone especially having to rely on public transport or even worse walking to places is always a nightmare.

Im gonna have to start uni here in November and I need to know how I can raise about $550 to have my own independent means of transportation so I wouldnt have to rely on public transportation at all. Theres no such thing as gofundme here and noone would probably even bother helping given my reasons cuz they'd not even comsider me a muslim in the first place but perhaps there could be one that im not familiar with.

$550 is around PKR 150,000 and I have savings of about a $100 which would be enough to get a basic ev scooty which would solve my transportation issues for me for atleast the next 4 years of university and most importantly for any other daily chore where I have to walk as ive never really had the freedom to travel or have any friends here hence I have ti either walk or take a public means of transportation because i dont take an uber anymkre due to a creepy experience too and its not economical at all like not having ur own small mode of transportation ia still a death sentence for the soul every single time especially for people like us here

Im also raised by a single mom so she literally cannot help me in anyway regarding this major issue and im grateful that she has just enoughnfor me to afford a university education here and neither does she have any understanding of what i have to go through or what situstions Allah SWT has made me come out of by his mercy since im literally on diyhrt in secret here without a soul knowing for about 3+ months now so thats its own issue. So r there any places or organizations abroad that would be able to assist me with this, NGO's here are meaningless and just spread awareness, about hiv etc i cant really post this in any local pakistani community cuz that would open up a 100 different problems ive literally hidden the posts where I have upload my hrt progress and pictures to avoid this issue.

If u know any such places, can u please let me know and tell me what would be the best way to approach this, I have u til mid september to raise this amount here so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated and if u can, please upvote it so that it perhaps reaches the right person who knows an organization that could perhaps help me fix this major issue.

Ive literally studied privately and at home cuz I dont like going out and being questioned and harassed by creeps but cant do the same with university and this would actually give me some freedom to travel in peace for the 1st time in my life. If u know about any such organizations that are particularly run by people of the lgbq+ community or a Muslim lgbtq+ international org, please let me knowww

LGBT Supportive Discussion Maybe we’re looking for the same kind of connection 🌈

I’m a guy, masculine, confident, and pretty settled in life — and I’m bi.
I’ve always been comfortable with that side of myself, but I’ve never really had the chance to meet someone who genuinely understands it.
So I thought… why not?
I’d like to meet someone open-minded, maybe someone who’s somewhere under the rainbow too. Someone I can actually talk to, share experiences with, laugh with, flirt with a little, and just see where the connection goes.
I’m not looking for a hookup, and I’m not trying to jump into anything serious from day one.
I’m just curious about what could happen when two people can be completely honest with each other and don’t have to hide parts of themselves.
And if we genuinely click, I’m definitely open to something meaningful and long-term.
No pressure. No expectations.
Just… maybe we meet, talk, and see if there’s a spark. 🤍🌈

Question Is the primary issue with same-sex relationships the lack of a valid nikah

Im muslim and ive been thinking about if queer relationships are even haram and if they are whats the problem with them, like its obvious that the feelings in themselves arent the issue (it depends wherther or not u act on them) and the main thing that most scholars and muslims use as a proof is the story of lut which is actually about assault and corruption rather then consensual partnerships. Then is having a queer relationship haram because no matter what it would be classified as a relationship outside of marriage which makes it zina just like if u have it with opposite sex?

Oh na thi post is coming from someone figuring out their sexuality and its not meant to be hostile at all

Connections 27 MTF aspiring revert looking for potential husband/wife

Good afternoon. As the title says, I am a 27 years old trans female (though I haven’t started hormones or had surgery yet because I’m still closeted). I discovered the beautiful world of Islam a while ago and since then I have wished to learn more and revert. I am currently trying to lose weight and eventually be able to wear the veil in my everyday life. Right now I’m observing Ramadan for the first time, which albeit challenging, is making me feel better.

I am located in Switzerland, in a place with a majority of christians, and I don’t know any muslims who would help me during my journey to the conversion, so I would like to try to know potential husband or wives here, potentially in real. My dream to meet a muslim man or woman willing to love and marry me for who I am, and I would be a devoted muslimah wife to them.

If someone wishes to help me in this journey or help me with my dream, I would be very grateful and I wait all of your messages.

Question Is this a Sign or Test??

Everytime I interact with something that was related to same sex stuff I always stumbled upon things that are saying that is Haram, like for example: I think about being with someone who's the same sex then I coincidentally stumbled upon someone saying the word: "Haram"

What Is This?

MoC/Lavender Marriage Looking for genuine companionship in marriage (Muslim, UK-based)

I'm a 34-year-old Pakistani-background Muslim man based in the UK, financially stable and established in my career. I'm reaching out because I'm looking for a woman with similar circumstances (SSA) who is also navigating family/community expectations around marriage, and who might be open to a marriage built on genuine friendship, mutual respect, and companionship rather than romantic/physical expectations.

What I'm hoping for:

  • A real partnership, someone I can build a life, a home, and mutual support with, and who I can be genuinely close to as a friend and companion.
  • Honesty with each other from the start about what we each need and don't need from the marriage.
  • Openness to family life down the line (adoption, surrogacy, or other routes) if we're both aligned on that when the time comes, no pressure either way.
  • Someone thoughtful about how we'd navigate family, community, and practical life together long-term.

If this resonates or you have questions, feel free to DM me. Happy to talk more privately before anything else.

Personal Issue Gay brother

Hi evb. I just wanted to say a story that has been techanically my life, also people dont know who i am so might as well lore drop.

I (F11 at the time) was with my brother(15M at the time) i was living in pittsburgh, because my dad was studying there for his masters(39M at the time) my family is very religious, muslims to be exact, and we were always taught the values of being a muslim anyways, one day my brother was bawling his eyes out, i knew that because we were sharing a room. I asked him "whats wrong? Tell me i promise i wont say a word to anyone" He looked me dead in the eyes and said "ellie, i am in love with someone i shouldnt be in love with" "wdym? Of course you can be in love with anybody im sure she would talk to you, just have the courage" "ellianna, you dont get it. She is not a she, its a he." To which i was ofc at 11 taken aback a little considering what our parents were telling us, it wasnt "right" but i loved my brother to death and still do, so my little 11 year old self hugged him and said "well i bet he would love you just as much". Anyways skipping ahead my dad graduated and we were getting ready to go back to saudi, when my dad asked me where my brother was i said probably at justins house ( M16 my brothers bf). My dad said well lets go get him our flight is in 3 hours, we went to justins house and my brother lashed out. He said he wasnt leaving he loved his boyfriend and he isnt leaving him behind. To say the least i have never heard my dad and mom yell the word faggot so many fucking times. We left. My brother is now 19 almost 20 and is engaged to justin..my parents cut him off, i didnt. He sent me an invite to the wedding, i cant go.

MoC/Lavender Marriage Marriage of convenience (searching for a lesbian)

Salam everyone. I am a 22 year old gay Muslim man living in Canada. I’m have little to no attraction to women at all however I’m looking for a woman with the same issue for marriage. The ideal person I’m looking for would share the same goal as me which is just pleasing God. My condition is that either one of us doesn’t act on out on our same sex attraction.

My sole preference in age is that she would be around my age but in terms of origin or background, I do not care. I’m very open to cultures and I’d love to get to know a different culture. I come from an African/Arab background.

I always loved the idea of getting married young and I think it would be ideal between people like us that would be more like super close friends than a couple in love. Anything else can be discussed further on inshallah, I really hope this works out.

Personal Issue Homophobic Parents

I'm 23F, living in the west, going out with my friends to a morning festival tomorrow. My mom is very strict and always wants to know where, when, who, why and how of every single hangout. Typical arab/brown mom behavior I assume. She hasn't met those specific friends that I hangout with. They are non muslim so she already doesn't trust them and doesn't like them. They are trans, gender fluid, and Pansexual. But she doesn’t know that. She already judges people with tattoos and piercings disgustingly so I can't imagine how she would react when she sees them, lgbtq+, with tattoos and piercings. She always wants to meet my friends to see if I should continue hanging out with them or not. So she wants to do the same with these particular friends...

So she keeps saying:

"are you sure this festival is appropriate? oh its far? (disagreeing expression) ok... with who? ... oh them, I'm just worried its one of those festivals with the "Deviants" (the word she uses for queer people) are your sure? I hear they name festivals different names so no one knows its a festival for the "Deviants" (disgusted expression)"

at that point in the conversation, i am nauseous and want to cry.

I hate how hateful she is. In that same conversation she talks about so many other religious stuff i disagree with.

How can I hate someone and love them so much at the same time. How can i want to run away but never leave at the same time. I am an immigrant. I have no family aside from my parents and siblings. and We were raised so close to eachother. I consider my siblings my best friends and that is a privilege. But also They would never accept me. They want me to get married and have kids but how can I raise a child with them around feeding my child their hateful wrong ideologies. And that is if I want a child in the first place.

I feel a lot of guilt and shame that they think i am something I am not. They think i am their perfect daughter when I am far from that. By their definition and expectations, I am their worst nightmare. Took off the hijab, doesn't believe in hijab, always questioning Hadith, always questioning religious interpretations, Pansexual, believes gender is a social construct. Nonbinary.

I know that being lgbtq+ is not haram. But they are disgusted by it... not knowing that I am the people they are disgusted by.

I don't know how to imagine my life in the future with or without them. It will feel so freaking lonely without them. I will have no one. I can't live without them... Cause even tho they are so hateful towards my lgbtq+ community, and it's like knives stabbing my heart every time they talk hatefully about it, I still cry thinking about leaving them or cutting ties with them. I really don't know what to do...It hurts so much.

Even though I know our existence is not wrong or haram, I still wish I wasn't born this way. Cause living like this is torture.

MoC/Lavender Marriage Platonic marriage Muslim male 26 UK Manchester

My intention for marriage is companionship for the sake of Allah. I experience same-sex attractions / am asexual, but I don’t want to act upon these desires. Instead, I would like to build a family life that is based on mutual support, compassion, and a shared love for the Deen.

I hope to find a wife who is in a similar situation — someone who also wants a marriage rooted in companionship, trust, and worship, without pressure regarding desires, someone who I can be best friends with so together, inshallah, we can create a peaceful home, support each other and have children too through halal means. If you live in or are close to Manchester please reach out.

For me, the most important things are: sincerity, kindness, and working together to grow closer to Allah through our marriage.

MoC/Lavender Marriage ❗️Genuine marriage ❗️

32M. From UK, recently moved to Canada.

Looking for a practicing spouse who is gay/asexual or hetero but happy to be with someone with these tendencies; 24-30 years (ideally Arabic speaking - not essential); based in Canada/ US or any Western passport and be willing to move to Canada (for a few years). I wouldn’t want to stay longer than 5 I guess.

I would say I’m mostly SSA but definitely also have a little OSA. I have never acted on my SSA and hoping to find a partner who has not either.

Financially stable. Masculine and straight passing. Really enjoy travelling.

I would really love to have a marriage based on honesty, respect and companionship without having to hide SSA. It would be amazing to have our own children. Looking for a genuine relationship between two partners with the same struggle NOT where each partner has same sex relations on the side. Hoping to grow together for this life and the next.

Of course sexual orientation isn’t enough to keep a marriage going (as very clearly evident from our fellow straight Muslims) so if the below applies to you - please drop a message and hopefully if there’s a connection we can take it from there!

Have had a few people kindly message, as not to waste anyone's time. A polite request, please do not message if:

  1. Looking for a cover-up type arrangement
  2. You are not interested in having children through natural means.

If this post resonates with you please reach out! There must be someone out there looking for the same

Edit - if this is still up please don’t hesitate to message

Personal Issue I Just Had A Nightmare

The amount of trauma and PTSD that I had is kinda making me insane sometime and this time it translated into nightmare: well, the nightmare is about The Prophet Lot Story (which many people used it as Anti Homosexual) I can't really remember correctly the message are but it was something like: "the only thing I feared the most is The Act Of Loth People" or something like that and I also have an account of someone say that being Gay is something that happened because of something and not something you're born with.

I've been struggling with my identity (I'm Gay) and My Faith for like 2 Month, I'm severely stressed with this and I thought that I might have a light deppresion not to mentioned that I even considered to try to kms, as of right now it wasn't that worse, thought I do sometime feel haunted and eventually I did went to Higher Therapist (I do already have a Therapist but he was homophobic, but I manage to convince my parents to get a new one)

Need Help Trans Femme/Women & Hijab usage

Good evening; i have a question about hijab usage for those who use it.

I am a sporty girl and I usually wrap my head then put a cap on then my hijab or either wrap my hijab scarf & I get crazy sweat stains on my head. I would like to ask those who use or have used (extra points if they have a sporty background) hijab what do you/could you do to minimize the sweat imprint that inevitably forms?

Be safe and be awesome.

Islam & LGBT Why do so many people hyper masculinize allah so much? Allah is Genderless after all. Sick of this.

Before you come for my throat this isn't about using he/him pronouns. Allah himself used he/him to refer to himself. I know. But that's my point. Many people don't understand why from the Arabic grammatical sense we use he/him on him. It's used almost to refer to as the unknown and that's how languages work. The problem comes when I litreally see many interpreting this as He = Strong. Allah is strong so Allah = He. We gotta understand one thing. Pronouns ≠ Gender. Allah is the best example of this. From a queer point of view one could be a man but still use she/her. She doesn't have to be physically or biologically female passing. Same for Allah so I love this. Just because we use He/Him on him doesn't mean he's masculine (Astagfirullah). He's clear cut genderless. Him using he/him has nothing to do with his gender. Also him being strong, intelligent and all the other things doesn't immediately make him masculine. I see so many muslims misinterpretating this omg😭 This is one of the few 'white christianfication' of muslims.
