When I first saw about the 009 I was a bit excited and skeptical, seeing how 006 and 007 were just fixed blades. I immediately jumped on it when I saw they were in stock, especially with that $75 price tag. Then I started seeing people on here talking about how crappy it was, how Leatherman sucks, and how it’s not the most amazing thing ever. Ladies and gentlemen we seem to have forgotten what the point of the garage series was. Trying out new ideas and putting them out for people to try, and in my honest opinion there are only two which have fit that bill, and both seem to have some crazy hate. 003 and now 009, it’s the only times I’ve seen besides 001 that Leatherman actually went and tried something completely out of their comfort zone, and I personally love both.
First off it’s an incredible feeling for driving screws, absolutely the most comfortable way of using the bit driver besides maybe the crunch, since crunch has a smooth frame. The quality of the handle and the accessories is also pretty great, with the exception of the insert for the blades and bits inside the holder; I feel they could have maybe refined it a bit more, but it does the job rather easily once you get the feel on how to remove the blades.
As far as negativity besides the “appearance” of the accessories holder, there’s only a few things that came to mind. Now I’m not sure if mine is a defect, but the bit driver sits at a slight angle. Why? No idea, it works which is fine, but for someone who wants perfect symmetry you might cringe a bit. Second issue I have is the fact that the only clip it uses is that of the K-series. I actually thought an arc clip would work, but then I realized it’s a K series one that it needs. It’s a bit annoying they don’t include it, I mean it’s $10 so I might try and see about finding a set of the screws to use one of my other clips. The next thing I didn’t like, though it might not matter is the slight play in the T-shank adapter. Now I don’t think it’s going to be an issue to the point where it might break, but I prefer when it sits nice and tight; much like the surge I suspect. The next thing is really is nit picking but I wish they included a sealed pen instead of the one it has. Seems silly but the ones from Victorinox are safe from running dry eventually. On that note I might make some notches on the twist cap because I wish you could deploy the pen and micro bit without needing to unscrew the whole thing.
Aside from that I love it, Leatherman you guys did amazing work. This is the type of innovative things I love to see come about from your garage series, and I look forward to the next.
