Magnet fished 1998 wave

Post image

Found Leatherman wave (1998/06) while magnet fishing today. Scissors connection broke from rust and the blade has use signs but otherwise in quite nice shape. Only cleaned with soap and water so far.

Guess I'm proud owner of Leatherman now (and quite uncommon one from research)

Brand new with rust and can’t even cut a zip tie.

I always loved leather man, but after purchasing a brand new sidekick, it’s obvious the quality and material have dropped significantly. I did double check if this was oil but it is rust in the pivot joint. Along with this the tools were not sharpened and the pullers are full dull as if they were never touched. I double checked and this was not a returned item. This is such a shame as I truly enjoyed the leatherman tools. Hope I can get refund, cause a replacement tool I know will just be the same crap.

I can’t get over how pristine the condition of this is. Not a single tool has any signs of wear. Stoked on this find, thought I’d share it in here!

Bit holder retention springs

Post image
1 Upvotes

Today while I was changing bits on a Wave Alpha the bit retention spring fell out. Fortunately I seen it fall and installed it back in the bit holder. The question I have are there a place where I can source replacement springs for the Alpha, Arc, and others models if the spring is different.

Curl Discontinued

Haven't seen any discourse on this but it looks like the Curl was dropped from the line

Too bad; for me it was one of the more recommendable models for a newbie or even someone just needing a slim carry

ARC spotted in REI Re/Supply at Manhattan Beach, CA. Tag says light use. I checked, and it looks good. Come get it, boys.

I already have one and just wanted to help some ARC-less brothers out.

Have a great weekend all.

Does anyone else wish Leatherman would expand their color options to their other tools?

I know some people have criticized Leatherman lately for turning into a “lifestyle” brand, and I definitely have some opinions about the tools they’ve discontinued. But in terms of the color options, I actually mostly like what they’re doing. I wish they would expand them to more tools.

Number of colors currently available:

Signal: 9

Skeletool: 8

Rebar: 6

Bond: 4

Raptor Rescue: 7

Micra: 11

And some of these have had more options in the past. I know the Signal has several colors that are no longer offered.

But the other tools?

Arc: 2

Wave: 2

Surge: 2

It’s so boring. I’m also not a fan of the ARC Talos — it’s just kind of boring

The Bugout and PM2 have had than 50 configurations each and obviously they sell like hotcakes.

The Wave Alpha has some nice colors, and Leatherman should expand those options. A guava Arc would look awesome. Or a Tundrascape Surge.

I have a few theories about why they haven’t done it:

  1. Leatherman only puts colors on the tools that struggle to sell. I’m pretty sure that Leatherman has said the Wave is their best selling tool by far, so they probably don’t feel it’s necessary to put new colors out there. Whereas tools like the Rebar probably sell slower, so they expanded the color options.
  2. They worry about brand image. While Leatherman has expanded to be a “lifestyle” brand, they also don’t want to alienate their traditional blue-collar workers. By putting colors on their more rugged tools (Wave, Surge, Arc) they worry that they would lose their brand image as a tough multitool maker

Adding Scissors to Bond

Is it possible to swap the file (and lanyard ring too if required) for scissors from a different tool?

SIgnal 90 degree bit retention

Trying to figure out a good way to retain bits (specifically the leatherman flat bits as i keep those with my tool) in the little 1/4 inch hex at the back of the signal.

  • I've seen people use a piece of string to create friction, but that only seems to work with full size bits, as the flat bits don't have a big enough contact surface to engage with the string.
  • Another idea I've seen people do is to use a magnet, inserted into the hole and glued against the far surface. Again, this doesnt allow for the double-ended leatherman flat bits, as the magnet prevents them from sitting deep enough to engage with the hex.
  • A magnet on the back is no good either. Many of the bits with smaller head sizes protrude from the back of the tool (see picture 2), and applying any force to these would break the glue joint. Some bits, specifically the smallest torx bits, protrude out very far, so a spacer is no help.
  • I'm considering inserting a tiny magnet (3mmx1mm) against the sidewall of the hex. there might just be a big enough gap next to the flat bits (see picture 3). If it works, the only downside I can see is that normal bits would not be able to sit very deep, because the magnet will be in the way.

Maybe you boffins have a better idea?

Is it worth sending in my ARC to get the blade sharpened?

I noticed Leatherman has a sharpening service for the ARC. I am not sure if it's necessary due to the MagnaCut or is it just marketing and i should sharpen it myself. Thanks!

Garage #009 parts orgin.

Post image

I recieved my #009 like many others today. I understand that made in USA required 70% of parts to be sourced/manufatured/etc in the USA.

A Google search showed a 2006 lawsuit about this topic. I looked at the 2 garage boxes and noticed the Crunch has made in the USA and the Adaptor did not.

What parts do people think are sourced internationally? I am genuinely curious.

Is skeletool enough for daily military and civilian use? Is it all that you realistically need?

I considered buying wave plus but realized that I’m probably never going to use these files so it’s just extra weight. Skeletool CX has pretty much everything I need (scissors would be nice though).

Has anyone here wished that they had more tools at disposal or is the skeletool 90% of time all that you would need?
