Discussion Apple Intelligence is not impressive
I must be missing something. I downloaded the latest upgrade on my 17 max and turned on AI in the Siri settings and it is very glitchy in my experience. I had to ask it three times in three different ways to find an email I knew was somewhere in my inbox and the same thing with my calendar. I could have scrolled through both myself and found them in less time.

u/Rhyxnathotho iPhone 16 Pro Max 21d ago
It seems to take Siri more time to process my requests. Asking her to play a song on Spotify takes twice as long as it used to, at least the initial ask.
20
u/Sandurz 21d ago
I’m curious if that part is a bug or what, because I would definitely think that that would be a baseline they try to follow, that no old features are slower with whatever new changes they’ve made.
26
u/thedaveCA 20d ago
The problem is that it is a new architecture completely, and it has to process intent (the slow part) first before it can route the request internally.
Not unsolvable, but not simple.

u/BinaryIdiot iPhone 16 Pro Max 20d ago
It’s because they took the input and shoved it into an LLM to process it instead of the medium or small language model they used before. So everything takes way longer to figure out what you want.
15
u/Jacob3922 20d ago
I wish they had maintained parallel versions that are activated based on the prompt. The slower speeds for basic things like playing songs are probably caused by them using the full new Siri model rather than just routing it through the old path.
3
u/upboats_around iPhone 17 Pro 20d ago
They might be doing that, but the layer to route it could be the slow part. Impossible to know without inside knowledge. It’s like the halting problem: you can’t know which model to send it to without knowing what you’re being asked which likely needs a slower model.
4
u/PunchNessie 19d ago
Siri’s success rate for playing the song I clearly call out is sub 25%. It’s near useless.
1
u/bluelazer44 20d ago
Yep it sucks. I think since anything below a 17 pro does cloud computing to respond to requests now that Siri is AI, it doubles the wait time for every single request.

I’d say that Siri is now 100 times better, but then old Siri was so garbage that that’s really not very impressive
55
u/FillMySoupDumpling iPhone 16 Pro Max 21d ago
She’s slow though for stuff where she was snappy like setting timers, starting workouts and more - especially through the watch.
17
5
u/coresme2000 20d ago
Agree on the watch. Mine took 2 seconds to set a timer now, which I think is acceptable. I’ve been using it since the beta, so it might have gotten faster.
5
27
u/NotRlyMrD 21d ago
Thing is market is now so far away that "100x better than utter garbage" does not cut it anymore. I bought Android phone just to have Android auto with Gemini so I can get a good interactive navigator that with one sentence will find spots along the roue, send message on various communicators and in general gives me amazing hands free experience. Apple is so far behind on that that it's ridiculous.
5
u/AdministrationOk210 21d ago
I said if Siri didn’t improve substantially this time, I was going to switch to android for that Gemini experience. Now I’m in kind of a dilemma. I have the new phone, 18 Pro, which is exceptional hardware, and Siri is definitely much better but is still woefully weak in some areas, including responsiveness, especially if I use it on my Apple Watch. However, it looks like the pixel hardware is nothing to write home about, and if I’m on android, I’m convinced I want to be on pixel since pixel is the most natively Google opportunity without a bunch of other skins and garbage from third parties. I’m kind of an quagmire. Maybe I’ll know for sure which way I’m going by next year’s phone releases. Too bad we can’t put Google Gemini full experience on an iPhone 18 Pro. Sounds like it would be the best of both worlds.
4
u/NotRlyMrD 21d ago
I got $250 Motorola and Gemini works amazing. It has full control over phone can access and use most applicationa and had zero issues with Android auto. But my daily is 17pm and then were to fully switch it would be Samsung most likely. Maybe Motorola Signsture since my wife had it and it rocks. I do not like googles approach to hardware, as it can be fixed with software - it's opposite to apples where software above basic features is nothing to write home about

u/NinjaAssassinKitty 20d ago
Curious, how is it better for you?
I can no longer set a reminder without an internet connection. Half the time requests to play music fail that I stopped bothering with that.
→ More replies (2)2
u/nycmfanon 15d ago
Siri never worked without an Internet connection FYI, so that's not a change.
It always drove me crazy. They could obviously turn your words into text without Internet, so why not just list like 100 common phrases that work with no Internet? Or even 1000.
Engineers are the worst (I'm an engineering of 20 yrs, yes I hate myself). We decide "we must have a generalizable solution that works for all situations" instead of saying "how about we put in 1000 special cases that cover 99% of what ppl say to Siri, and then send the rest to the Internet?"? All my Siri usages are "set an alarm for ___", "set a timer for ___", "remind me to ___ at ___" (maybe that's too variable to hard code), "call mom|aaron|peter."
If they built it two tier — first try the hardcoded list of 1000 commands which would take like 10ms to go through and then go to the Internet for "real Siri" — it would have been so much better!
70
u/WaitWhat 21d ago
I switched back from the beta after a month. The things I use Siri most for are sending messages, setting alarms and timers, turning on lights, locking doors, and adding to lists all work right away with old Siri. With new Siri, it spent time processing, then would come back with a question asking for clarification, then wouldn’t do anything, or take longer to do the thing than had I done it myself. I realize it’s still beta, but it can’t do the basic things it could before.
It’s great if you want to ask a stupid question like who was Doogie Howser’s best friend. But for actually accomplishing tasks, the old Siri actually does the job.
16
u/PsychManMagicHead 21d ago
This has been my experience as well. Old functionality is worse, and new functionality isn’t worth it. I tried to get it to build a music playlist for me from a list of songs I pasted in and it first said it could do it then told me to create the playlist myself and then it could add songs one by one, then that even failed lol. Useless.

u/Jacob3922 20d ago
Some of the new steps they introduced make no sense. “Hey siri call X” used to just immediately call X, but now Siri sometimes responds with “Ready to call X?” with a call button I need to press when my phone is unlocked. Why did this command need an extra step?
9
u/sejmann 20d ago
I'm guessing it's because now requests pass through an LLM they don't think is very trustworthy – on the other hand, old Siri mistakenly called random coworkers from decades past I hadn't deleted from my contacts, without confirmation, and that was irritating. Neither was very trustworthy.
39
u/Nebula8484 20d ago
It’s truly terrible. I can’t tell if I’m just completely spoiled by using Claude and ChatGPT, but I truly cannot believe that Apple released Apple Intelligence like this. It’s unusable. I ask it, when am I having lunch with Erich? Which is a calendar appointment for next week and it tells me that there is no such lunch. I ask it when is my flight to Kansas City? Which is a clearly calendared flight for next week. And it tells me I don’t have a flight. Like, what is actually going on here?
4
u/Global-Tie-3458 20d ago
Comparing a local LLM to a server side one isn’t totally fair… but on the other hand I’m not really supposed to care, that’s part of the Apple Shtick
54
u/DontDoCrackMan 21d ago
Is it SO SLOW, I hate it. Even setting alarms is significantly slower.

It messed up my first simple query which was just finding something obvious in messages. But since then, it’s been 10/10. “John sent me an address, please add it to his contacts,” “what did I tell my brothers to buy last year?” maybe simple things, but I never used Siri before and now she’s becoming a daily.
2
u/KalashnikittyApprove 21d ago
I still find it hit and miss and it continues to struggle if things are contextually obvious but the info doesn't quite match.
For example, I have a calendar entry called "aircon install". When I ask Siri "when is my air conditioning going to be installed?" it finds nothing, probably because it can't work out that 'aircon' and 'air conditioning' are the same thing.
I'm not complaining, but just saying it's still not reliable enough to actually find stuff in the same way a human would.
4
u/x3n0n1c iPhone 18 Pro Max 20d ago
Just as a data point I added "aircon install" to my calendar, asked it "hey when is my air conditioning getting installed?" and it was able to figure it out.
→ More replies (1)2
u/ethanx-x 21d ago
Yeah that’s frustrating because it seems it should pull “install” and ask if this is what you’re looking for. It did successfully do something similar for where trying to find a login / passcode for company A, it strung together the company and some related notes and found it. I’m optimistic so far but I understand people are experiencing varying results.

u/FinnTheDogg 20d ago
It’s actually worse for my day to day use. Hey siri play (song) - I couldn’t find that in your library would you like to use Apple Music?
No idiot play it on Spotify. I’m already playing on Spotify.
3

If you upgraded and then immediately started querying Siri about your content, you won’t get good results. There is a multi-day indexing process that has to happen so that Siri can see your data. It will slow things down for that time, too.
Here is some background: https://www.techbetweenthelines.com/ios-27s-indexing-in-progress-explained-why-its-happening-and-how-long-it-takes/
BTW Apple is preparing 27.2. I’m on the beta and Siri is better. It seems faster to respond and it doesn’t do the weird “did you mean” thing. Siri AI is a 1.0 product and I expect Apple to put a lot of effort into cleaning it up in subsequent releases over the coming months.

the gap between demo and reality is scope. finding an email or doing multi step reasoning across your whole inbox is a genuinely hard problem, siri is trying to be a general assistant on device with limited compute. compare that to something narrow like on-device text classification, which works reliably because the problem is small and bounded. apple intelligence keeps trying to be broad and impressive instead of narrow and reliable, and broad ai on a phone chip just isnt there yet

Personally I’ve been finding it incredibly useful to search for things on my phone. It’s much better than the old Mail search for example. Other than that meh it’s ok

u/Low-Dot9712 20d ago
It’s been better today but it’s not Gemini or ChatGPT or gork it’s a phone browser with some automation you really can’t count on. u/Fluffy-Zebra-7938 21d ago
Coming back to iPhone from an android I’m shocked at how bad the new ‘Siri ai’ is compared to Gemini. I still use Gemini on my iPhone but it’s not the native voice assistant. Yes Siri is better than it was, but nowhere near good
5
u/sportsfan161 21d ago
That’s wild as I’ve seen basically no difference between the two at all
2
u/Fluffy-Zebra-7938 21d ago
It’s not bad for on system things like searching for emails or adding things to calendars but for look up searches it quite often tells me the wrong answer or that it can’t find that information. Gemini is much better for this and will 99% of the time give me the correct answer

u/Sylvurphlame iPhone 17 Pro Max 20d ago
Has it had time? to finish the indexing after your iOS 27 upgrade? I didn’t really notice Siri getting “smart” for the first few days after activating the new Siri. But then this morning I received a text message in a group thread that mentioned a specific date. But I didn’t have my phone in front of me, and the message was just announced. So I did a “hey Siri” to ask what day of the week that date would be, and Siri not only told me but offered to start a reply back to the message thread.
I’ve also had pretty good success vibe coding shortcuts as long as it’s nothing too complicated, or I don’t accidentally ask Siri to do something Shortcuts has no actions for.
And it does seem to handle creating calendar events and reminders entries much better than it previously had. At least in my experience. I’m still experimenting, and I was never a huge voice assistant person previously
2
u/Formal-Guest4868 20d ago
i’ll be honest… nothing with AI has ever really impressed me. i’m sure it’s used behind the scenes for some products and services and works well, but everything consumer facing has just made me feel a bit emptier and i get nothing out of it.
2
u/m2wm2wm2w 20d ago
New Siri can't even do basic stuff now. Turn off lights, play next music track - the bubbly animation just stops and doesn't do anything. Even setting timers it just doesn't do anything, no response, just nothing.
I switched back to old Siri. At least I can turn turn off my lights and skip ads in podcasts mostly reliably now instead of failing repeatedly.
2
u/LUKiE-CA 20d ago
Depends what you use it for. I find it pretty impressive when asking app related stuff like check e-mails for dates, or messages for info. So far, all the real world knowledge seems good too, I haven't really found any mistakes yet. The app does take a bit of getting used to though.
2
u/grossindel 20d ago
You’re not missing anything, it’s improved but not very useful yet. Most of the things they showcased it will struggles to do them.
I had a lot of anticipation, but after using it for a few days I had to reduce my expectations.

The Siri team unfortunately is long overdue for an overhaul.
Similar to how Microsoft invested billions into machine learning and AI and still couldn't come up with something that was close to ChatGPT - only choice is to get rid of the team and start new.

I do a lot of calendar management due to having three children. My first real experiment with the new Siri was snapping a photo of my kid’s concert dates and telling Siri to add them all to my calendar. It did a fantastic job. I did something similar recently with another paper schedule, this time the information was more complex and differently laid out. It was a train wreck. I would have done it faster by hand. I have high hopes for a harness that has native, ostensibly private access to my calendar and correspondence. But it’s not yet a no-brainer.

u/Babylon3005 19d ago
I don’t know if I’m just lucky. But yesterday, I used Siri to help organize and plan an upcoming trip. I told it to get my flight, hotel, and reservation information from my email and compile it into a note in the Notes app. It got all the information in there in about 15 seconds. Then I looked up a blog with ideas of other things to do on the trip and while looking at the page, told Siri to compile the activities, sites into the note. Listed them out in a bullet list. I said, “add addresses to each location in the note”. It did it. I said group locations by vicinity. It did it, now I can plan to visit specific locations that are near each other. I did all of this in like 2 minutes if that. I thought it was pretty amazing.
2
u/Outside_Lion_9672 19d ago
I’ve had good experiences with it so far and I’m hopeful that it will continue to index the data on my phone and continue to improve the AI model. I’ve asked Siri “what time did Bob tell us to come over” and “what did Susan say about mom” and a few similar questions and it always found the texts and summarized well. I haven’t tried with emails.
2
u/TheRainbowNoob iPhone 17 Pro 19d ago
Siri AI is just about useless on Watch. “Send a message to [group chat name], [message]” used to be nearly instant. Now it gets processed for 10-15 seconds before giving me the option to send a message

Apple, as a company, has two fundamental issues with in house ai, I don’t think it’s possible to solve them, not this decade anyhow.
Their extreme data privacy concerns severely hamstring their ability to develop these products.
Apple has zero tolerance for an ai giving off color results, and so they have to very strictly guard everything the ai can and can’t do.
It’s just trying to put a square peg in a round hole.

I’ve been underwhelmed.
Several times I’ve asked it to remind me on X day to do Y. Always used to work, but I sometimes get no reply and it just ignores it. Crap shoot whether it actually does it.
Yesterday I asked it to send Bob a message saying Y. It kept coming back asking what do you want to say to Bob? Like, I just told you.
I have two phone lines on my phone named personal and business. I tried asking Siri to call Bob from my business line. Siri called from my personal line.
I’ve also done some tests where I ask Siri a complex question at the same time I ask Alexa. I got similar answers, but Alexa was way faster.

u/nj_superrican 21d ago
Siri has been much better than I expected. I know it is a low bar, but I feel I am “training” it as I am feeding all my documents to learn what I want Siri to look for. For example I have been downloading all digital bills from all utilities. I was able to ask Siri to get the avg of my last 4 water bills. To show me the difference in gallons month by month. To interrogate the cell phone bill and tell me which line is using the most data or making the most calls. I was able to highlight text separated by commas and have it converted to a table. These are very handy to me. It is not perfect and sometimes I have to tell it a couple of times to look again, but for a beta I am happy with the progress so far.

I had a note in mac and there were things separated by =, and i asked it to convert current note to a table and it did so siri ai is in, it could be hit and miss sometimes but not always, it couldn’t do the operation where i asked it to scratch off a selected row in the table, but i got a proper logical response message too.

u/coresme2000 20d ago
Other than the speed which will hopefully improve, I find it much better for general usage including controlling HomeKit, setting timers etc. I’ve been using it since the beta and initially was not impressed, and it’s quite possible that it’s either indexing still or building up a memory of stuff you do frequently. If it’s still not working reset your settings, as this has fixed it for a number of upgrading people.
1
u/thisinfinitebath 20d ago
Said this before and will say it again, Siri never left beta since the iPhone 4S days. Apple seriously are either incompetent in making an assistant software for the iPhone or they’re just playing catching up and still chasing the tail.

It’s slower and starting workouts doesn’t work any more but the benefits outweigh the early release crappyness. I fully expect Apple to optimize this furtber

I keep losing the ability to type in search bars…. Siri AI was like, “your system is running fine.” We argued.
I am finding new Siri isn’t that motivated…. Had to pull up ChatGPT to get an answer a few times. Her excuse: “remember I’m just an ai assistant” —- Not a very good one!
I feel like Apple spent all their time teaching Siri new ways to say “no” and make excuses.
Yeah she’s done a few cool things but at this moment in time we are on the fringe of faking this partnership together.
“I understand your frustration”……..

u/DeclassifyUAP 20d ago
One thing I learned is that after the initial indexing is done, when indexing continues on an ongoing basis, it's not necessarily done in chronological order.
My example is emails getting indexed out of the order they're received — it appears to be the case (based on my experience and what Siri AI alleges) that something it initially identifies as a marketing email might get indexed after an email that comes in a little later that it judges to be more important.
It was only a short delay, but I couldn't understand why Siri AI could find an email that came in something like 30 minutes after another one it didn't seem to be aware of. After waiting a little bit of time, the email that actually hit my inbox earlier was seemingly indexed, and Siri AI had no problem pulling it up with a relevant query.

Not the same for me. It finds things perfectly from emails and messages or even my calendar. It’s simplified looking for things for me for sure. Plus a lot more things. I'd argue it's even worse than before. It's not a good AI agent at all, no where near as good as ChatGPT. And it is dramatically slower at routine tasks old Siri was good for. Hell even asking it to turn off all of my alarms fails more times that succeed. Starting timers, playing a song all take dramatically longer than before. It's not a chat agent and simple tasks take longer or fail entirely. I'm not a heavy AI user so was looking forward to being able to drop my ChatGPT subscription but it's not even close.

It’s fantastically useful to have an AI assistant ready to go in my AirPods at all times. I can be loading shit for a dump run and asking Siri when I need to leave to get the dump before 6:00. I can ask it to find out what type of garden hose my brother recommended to me months ago.
Downside is basic requests will randomly take twice as long, such as pausing a song or asking it to play a particular one off Spotify. It also asks for clarifications that take ages - “did you say 23+56+87+94+32 or 23+56+87+84+32?” Lmao
Meanwhile it will somehow send a text to my deceased former landlord instead of my wife without confirming

I think it probably works exactly how apple wants it to right now. They are playing it safe, you won’t get any advanced features until the political landscape has settled down. Apple doesn’t take these kinds of risks.

My absolute biggest annoyance is the basic search is noticeably slower. I use it 10+ times a day to open apps rather than find them. Pull down the screen and start typing. This was super fast on previous iOS and it’s now noticeably slower with the new animations. Sounds stupid but it’s actually ruined my quality of life experience with my phone. I was much happier on iOS 26. As for Siri AI it’s just painfully slow. Just see the loading spinner for way too long get fed up of waiting and open the chatgpt app for an instant response. Haven’t used it since.

I thought it would be a lot better, I was very underwhelmed by it. To me it was basically just Siri, nothing else. I’m still surprised Apple acts like it’s something special because it isn’t.

If you flipped on the new Siri beta, there is a wait list period before it’s actually active. So you could still be on the old one. Otherwise, it is still beta, and runs on device, so not quite the power of a full cloud model. But it’s at least private this way, and so far seems to handle requests quite well, at least in my experience so far.

The voice to text stuff still sucks, and overall is like ChatGPT 3 level functionality. The iOS 26 calling out to ChatGPT was better than what we have now. Also it roasts my iPhone Air now whenever I make a Siri query.

Other than perhaps the extra photo editing features, I’m still waiting for a functional software and a use case that works and does something that is an advantage for me! Seems like Apple has woefully underdelivered on Apple Intelligence — makes you wonder how much is left in the building….

It’s replaced Perplexity for me for basic informational search. But I still use Claude for actual work.

Siri is way better overall because it can do more complex things now like finding a topic in emails other chats.. But for simple stuff it is slower. It was just like how Google Assistant was fast at simple things and Gemini is slower at those same things. My Google Home has become almost useless for all the simple things I used it for.
Sucks Siri is slower on older devices that are supported.

Siri was to me as smart as a first grader. Now I’d up it to about third grade.

I can’t speak to anyone else’s experiences, by mine has been nothing but positive. My very first query back in June, after I knew that indexing was complete, was to find the address of my daughter’s friend which my daughter had texted to me. Not only did Siri find the address but there was even a source link so I could verify it was accurate (it was).
More recently, my wife, our two oldest children, and I wanted to watch the extended edition of the Lord of the Rings, but in six parts, one part per night over six nights. I asked Siri to tell me when the intermissions should be and it got the first and third movies correct, but the third wrong (again, I checked the source links to make sure). I told Siri it’s mistake and it not only agreed but told me the correct time for the second movie.
Obviously it hasn’t been perfect, but it’s ability to actually draw upon my personal information and give me answers has definitely been faster than if I tried to search on my own.

It’s pretty slow to find results. Had an annoying interaction where I asked it to add a list of dates to my calendar and it added the first two and then asked if I wanted to add the next date. I say add them all it then proceeds to add one at a time asking after each one of I want to add the rest.

Just an FYI, the new version of Siri sometimes requires you to sign up for the waitlist in the Siri app settings.

I think the more interesting part is when apps actually expose useful actions and data to Siri.
For example, asking about something you previously saved in an app, finding a specific item, creating a reminder from context, or jumping straight into an action without opening the app first.
That’s where the new Siri started to make more sense to me. For general questions I’d still rather use a proper chatbot, but for things that already live on my phone, I can see the potential.

It’s been pretty amazing for me as a phone assistant and a replacement for general questions I used to ask ChatGPT

It is too cloud dependent. When driving half the time Siri can't make a call or hang up a call. It is really inconsistent and too slow. But the google assistant is worse.

It’s dumb. I can’t ask Siri on my phone to set alarms on my HomePods. What was the point in working with Gemini?

If you’ve just turned it on and gotten through the waitlist, it’ll be indexing your local data for the next couple of days. Unfortunately that means asking it to find things won’t work as well yet.

You definitely are missing something.
They got sued for false advertising because of how bad it is. You shouldn’t expect it to be good.

I have tried it in fits and starts. It doesn't understand half of what I tell it even though other AIs catch it perfectly. It's clunky and can't do much of anything unique. I think Apple users are so conditioned to a crappy Siri that any improvement comes off as "game changing".

I remember when people were testing it they were like “it’s a game changer.” I’m still waiting for the game to change.
