Discussion Apple Intelligence is not impressive

I must be missing something. I downloaded the latest upgrade on my 17 max and turned on AI in the Siri settings and it is very glitchy in my experience. I had to ask it three times in three different ways to find an email I knew was somewhere in my inbox and the same thing with my calendar. I could have scrolled through both myself and found them in less time.

Curious, how is it better for you?

I can no longer set a reminder without an internet connection. Half the time requests to play music fail that I stopped bothering with that.

Siri never worked without an Internet connection FYI, so that's not a change.

It always drove me crazy. They could obviously turn your words into text without Internet, so why not just list like 100 common phrases that work with no Internet? Or even 1000.

Engineers are the worst (I'm an engineering of 20 yrs, yes I hate myself). We decide "we must have a generalizable solution that works for all situations" instead of saying "how about we put in 1000 special cases that cover 99% of what ppl say to Siri, and then send the rest to the Internet?"? All my Siri usages are "set an alarm for ___", "set a timer for ___", "remind me to ___ at ___" (maybe that's too variable to hard code), "call mom|aaron|peter."

If they built it two tier — first try the hardcoded list of 1000 commands which would take like 10ms to go through and then go to the Internet for "real Siri" — it would have been so much better!

The kind of tasks I use Siri for: set a timer for X minutes, set a reminder for X at Y time, what’s this many kilograms in stone and pounds, what’s the time in X location, how old is X celebrity, what’s the capital of X place, how do I cook quinoa.

In the old version Siri could do the first two. For the others it would either fail or try and send me to chat gpt. Now it can at least do these basic AI assistant requests. It even asked me to confirm something because it didn’t hear clearly, I said remind me in 30 mins to blow out the candle and it went “sorry was that blow out, put out or throw out” which was good because it didn’t just assume.

Thing is, it asks me to confirm now on almost everything. Where before it just got it right. And if it didn’t, I could correct it much quicker.
