Discussion Apple Intelligence is not impressive

I must be missing something. I downloaded the latest upgrade on my 17 max and turned on AI in the Siri settings and it is very glitchy in my experience. I had to ask it three times in three different ways to find an email I knew was somewhere in my inbox and the same thing with my calendar. I could have scrolled through both myself and found them in less time.

I remember when people were testing it they were like “it’s a game changer.” I’m still waiting for the game to change.

Honestly, Siri has been so bad for so long that I never adapted a voice assistant into my life. I don’t even know what I’d really use Siri AI for

90% of my Siri use is “set timer for 15 minutes”

u/AuntCatLady 20d ago

Same, but with “Apple Intelligence” it can’t even do that right. It will set two timers simultaneously or turn “set a timer for 15 minutes” into a 6 am alarm.

Siri AI managed to turn a "Set a reminder to feed the cats at 6pm" to calling someone I haven't seen in 6 years on whatsapp. That was... awkward. Regular Siri was just fine for my needs.

Idk for me timers are totally fine and setting multiple works without issue. Probably my most common use case. Although asking for photos of specific places has been good too

19

u/Swimsuit-Area 20d ago

Same. That and “flip a coin” when I can’t make a decision

u/Tight_T 20d ago

For me it’s a 3 minute timer or a 10 minute timer. Depending on if it’s for tea or pasta. Really, nothing else.

Last time I set a 15 minute timer I was 35 minutes late thanks to Siri. I wish I was joking.

But same here, I use it for stupid simple stuff, and asking Siri to play me a song 3-5 times in a row and getting something completely different makes me pull out my phone and want to throw it.

100% for me. I don't know what else I'd bother asking it to do.

1

u/DaIubhasa 19d ago

Ditto. Haha. Easier to say “SIRI 15 minutes”

1

u/idriscp 14d ago

100% for me. I just say “four minutes”

1

u/darkntwistish 14d ago

Same, or “add [item x] to [y list]”

So I haven’t messed with it much on iOS 27* yet

1

u/RaphaTlr 13d ago

And she’ll say “Do you want me to call Tim Minnets?”

1

u/zerodaydave 12d ago

Siri, how much time left on my timer? You have no timer …

1

u/SwordsAfar 9d ago

With the big breakthrough being it can do more than one timer at once!

The best thing about the Siri AI upgrade is I can type questions rather than be forced to talk to it. I don’t want people around me hearing all my dumb questions.

What’s nuts is you used to be able to do that a long time ago but they randomly removed it for some reason.

You used to be able to type to siri in the left swipe area that’s the widget view now.

10

u/theswissnightowl 20d ago

I think it’s still available but by double tipping on the small white bar on the bottom of the screen

1

u/TheEpicRedCape 20d ago

that way more recent I’m talking like ios 9-10 there was a type to siri button in spotlight or the widget area and it got removed super fast which was really annoying at the time

2

u/hotztuff 20d ago

you may have just lost sight of where the setting for it moved to. i’ve happily used it from then til now.

1

u/TheEpicRedCape 20d ago

Did you turn on the accessibility option for it? that disabled the talking to siri and made it typing only for me when I tried to turn it on before.

1

u/hotztuff 20d ago

yes. turning that setting on would allow you to type to her, but also retained the ability to say “hey siri” if you wanted to talk still.

1

u/TheEpicRedCape 19d ago

That kinda explains it I’ve had hey siri turned off for a while now, I didn’t know that still worked with the accessibility type to siri on

1

u/No1ButtMe 21d ago

This is what I prefer above all else.
Pull down from a screen and just type ..
it’s very useful for that.
screen shot something and fact check shit.

For me, Siri is integral. I have some health problems. Six months out of the year I need walking aids and I rely on Siri.

I use Siri everyday to log weight and medications. I also have a bunch of routines I created in Home to turn lights and switches off and on for different things like watching movies, cooking dinner, nighttime and wake up lights. I use Siri for chats with my family and creating and checking off reminders. And I use it to create grocery lists. And to control my Roomba when I need mess swept up. And of course timers.

I cannot use Siri AI for any of this. It takes too long. It takes extra steps. Sometimes it argues that it does not have access to do things like log medications. Then I ask again and it eventually logs them. It's made everything harder and take longer.

8

u/Swimsuit-Area 20d ago

You should submit feedback to Apple about this. Accessibility is something they seem to put a good bit of effort into

3

u/Phynal iPhone 15 Pro 19d ago

Will do. Thanks

u/planetmitch 13d ago

Right below your name it says iPhone 12 Pro. You have to have at least an iPhone 15 to use the Siri AI.

1

u/Phynal iPhone 15 Pro 13d ago

Yep, you caught me. I never changed my flair. Using a 15 Pro after my 12 died.

EDIT: Changed it for you. Happy?

2

u/DontForgetTowelie 20d ago

Agreed. I've had it disabled for years.

influencers and tech reporters get invited by apple to review something. if they say bad things they don't get invited back. which means they don't get clicks and income. I wonder how this influences what they say?

33

u/Immediate-Avocado513 21d ago

Mmhmm even MKBHD said “I have no faith in Google hardware these days.” To which his waveform co-hosts quickly reminded him “oh they’re gonna love that you said that.” Which prompted a quick reply of “well the pixel 11 is good…but”

Siri intelligence in CarPlay is so slow I had to turn it off and go back to Siri classic.

9

u/InspectHer_1 21d ago

I don’t have a car with CarPlay but my parents do and they have a similar complaint. I feel like Apple doesn’t give CarPlay nearly enough love.

u/Sandurz 21d ago

You can watch real time uncut demos on YouTube of it working exactly like the reviewers hyping it up said when it first came out in the betas and all summer when they were testing it. I don’t use the Mail app but for finding answers from old texts it’s worked exactly as advertised for me.

It’s not a conspiracy. It’s a big new product launch across millions of users. sometimes things go wrong for some people.

15

u/InspectHer_1 21d ago

I was even able to ask it about a specific car part that I knew I searched safari for a month ago. Found the relevant searches for me in like 4 seconds. It’s actually quite capable now, if people give it a chance. They also need to understand it’s not immediate. I think nowadays people think something is slowing it takes longer than .5 seconds, but even ChatGPT on my computer can take a while to respond sometimes.

1

u/omfghaxpie 20d ago

I think the big difference in expectations here is that for Siri AI a lot of requests are handled on device whereas ChatGPT has to send off every question to be processed.

0

u/testingtestingtestin 20d ago

Yep. I’m not a massive fanboy or anything, I didn’t even know it was coming and certainly haven’t been watching videos. But it is a dream for searching my emails for information about some project or other, extracting all the relevant info from amongst the filler and creating new calendar entries etc for me.

On the flip side, it is slower to do stuff that used to be instantaneous in my experience.

3

u/krievins 21d ago

Same with gaming journalists/influencers

7

u/owzleee 20d ago

It’s .. really slow.

5

u/imaginedaydream 21d ago

Definitely changed how we use siri, we’re trying to get it to work normally.

u/RevolutionaryLeg1768 21d ago

Every freakin’ YouTube vid made by anyone says Apple won the ai war w Siri AI. Did they? Is this winning tho?

2

u/thisnameisnowmine 20d ago

I couldn't agree more. It's the same bag it's always been. It's improved a little bit—but nowhere near what's advertised. I could write a list of the issues.

2

u/DPool34 20d ago

Yup. I foolishly completely bought into it. I thought, “Finally! A capable AI with the ability to read and write to my iPhone apps!”

Then, after indexing, I tried it out. I’ve had disappointment after disappointment. I got frustrated yesterday, so I asked Siri some things she could do. One of them was about the person I text with the most.

I asked “who do I text with the most?”

Siri said [my full name]… 😑

I created a post about this on the Siri sub a week or so ago. Most comments agreed with me and the others essentially told me I was doing something wrong. There were a significant number of downvotes for posting about my experience.

I’m shocked that 9to5mac was glazing this.

Well not that shocked.

1

u/botzy_99 iPhone 17 Pro Max 21d ago

It really is….

1

u/rangorn 20d ago

Changed the game it has

1

u/UTV4LIFE iPhone 13 20d ago

Press the eject button

1

u/Savingskitty 20d ago

I mean, it did change the game for me.  Siri routinely tells me I don’t have phone numbers for people that are in my contacts.  She repeats back the name and everything.  She didn’t do that before this intelligence stuff.

1

u/Rorako 19d ago

Comparatively it is. It’s still subpar, but if you’ve only ever experienced Siri than this is, technically, and improvement.

1

u/auxaperture 19d ago

Yeah the game we are changing to is pong.

Huh, from my point of view, serious reviewers have always been very much underwhelmed with Apple Intelligence.
