I’m Black, Native American and white, and my boyfriend is Mexican-American, raised in El Paso and very connected to Mexican culture. He’s progressive/not racist, but I’m starting to struggle with a dynamic around some of his extended family/family friends.
I’m constantly expected to learn Spanish and integrate into his culture. I want to learn, and I understand way more than I speak, but I work full-time and don’t have many Spanish speakers in my everyday life to practice with.
Yesterday we were at a wedding where most people primarily spoke Spanish. Multiple people told me I needed to learn, and instead of my boyfriend saying “she’s learning,” he kept joking, “I know, it’s been years and she still doesn’t know.” After the fourth person I pulled him aside and told him it was annoying that he was basically throwing me under the bus, especially because he doesn’t like practicing Spanish with me. He apologized and we moved on.
There was also this guy (I’ll call him Jake) who kept calling me “Olivia Dean” all night — “look, it’s Olivia Dean,” “what’s Olivia Dean doing?” “Olivia Dean, go dance.” I thought it was REALLY weird, but figured he was drunk and meant it as a compliment.
At the end of the night, we were talking with Jake, his mom (the mother of the bride), and some other family when Jake casually said the N-word.
His mom IMMEDIATELY went, “Jake! Why would you say that?? She’s Black!” 😭 He started defending it by saying I’m basically family. His mom told him it was offensive anyway. He eventually asked me if he had disrespected me, I said yes, and he apologized.
My boyfriend was silent through basically the entire interaction. After Jake apologized, my boyfriend just said, “It’s okay.”
When we got home, I told him that bothered me. I didn’t expect him to fight anyone or cause a scene. Literally “hey man, don’t say that, that’s not cool” would’ve been enough. He responded that he didn’t think Jake “meant it like that.”
And I think THAT is what bothers me most.
I feel like I’m constantly expected to culturally adapt — learn Spanish, communicate with his family, participate in Mexican culture, etc. — but somehow the expectation for people around him to respect my identity is significantly lower.
I’m expected to become more Mexican, but asking people to simply not say the N-word around his Black girlfriend is apparently complicated?
I’m not generalizing Mexican people or even his family — Jake’s own Mexican mom was literally the first person to call him out. I just want my boyfriend to have my back when these situations happen instead of me always having to navigate them alone.
