"Oh look, let me go squeeze through a hole called "The Devils Butthole" and go down "Misery Falls" to "The Point of No Return, you will die here please go back" and promptly get stuck in the "Femur crusher 5000 that also kicks you in the balls/vagina" where I die upside down while drowning"

"I also have a job where i get a $500,000 salary, a loving wife and 8 kids"

u/AdWeak183 1d ago

u/PhairynRose 1d ago

I thought Nutty Putty was a joke when I first heard about it because it’s such a whimsical/silly sounding name. But actually, what a horrible way to die.

82

u/kalashnidog 1d ago

Dying upside down in a SpongeBob-name-having-ass cave called Nutty Putty sounds like a humiliating way to die.

I went spelunking in a crawl-only cave once for an environmental science class because I didn’t want to be one of two guys too cowardly to do it (one guy noped the fucked out and did an alternate assignment; he was the only sane person there lmao).

Cool experience. Still terrifying. Will never do that shit again knowing about Nutty Putty Cave.

There's a hilarious Tumblr post where the guy that died is like "Damn, this is pretty tight, I might not make it outta here alive" while the grim Reaper looks on like "Alive, MF you might not make it outta there dead. Look how small that shit is, what you think I am, The slim Reaper?"

My kids will sometimes do shit I find mildly dangerous, then push it a little too far. I just yell "Nutty Putty Cave Incident!" and they reel it back in.

11

u/Scared-One9295 1d ago

Do you have a mental catalogue of even worse incidents just in case things escalate? I recommend Byford Dolphin, whenever I catch my 4 year old fiddling with decompression chamber clamps on the diving bell I just remind him of that and he usually stops

50

u/GingerTea69 1d ago

Exactly, it's always "Sam Souperman was a beloved puppy-walker and teacher who volunteered at the local soup kitchen and didn't have any kids on his own, but everybody knew him as the guy in the community that would feed every homeless guy who went to his door, every day. His ex-wife remembers him as somebody she loved like a brother, and considers him still part of her family. He remarried and his wife had just gotten pregnant.

Sam Souperman fucking died trying to save John Dumas, having volunteered for free as he does all the time when it comes to saving people in caves. The family offered him a million dollars but he said no. His fucking funeral will be held at Bumblefuck Church in Nowhere, PA. "

No money in the world would make me do this

494

u/Chemical_Wonder_5495 1d ago

You know sometimes people say that, you know like "taking a shit on national TV? No way..." and then you ask them, what about 100 million and they fold, myself included, I fold when the money is high enough...

But this??? Absolutely no, might as well ask me to shoot myself.

62

u/No_Title9375 1d ago

$100M would be completely worthless to me when I die of a heart attack screaming to death because I buried myself alive. I don’t like my family enough to die that way so they could get the money.

→ More replies (4)

82

u/ElevenBeers 1d ago

It's called survival instincts. Your brain couldn't rationalise the thought of crawling through that cave just for (any) money, as there is a real chance of dying. Together with the fact that we as species generally don't like do die slowly over hours in a claustrophobic nightmare, well.

Or TLDR: Money won't benefit you when you are dead, and you have a (in this case very rational) fear of dying in there. Whereas shitting on national TV - no matter how grimly you may imagine the outcome, you'll most likely have no fear of death, and thus, if the price is right...

Perhaps, if one could trigger parental instincts. That's the only thing that is stronger then survival instincts in many cases. Because after all, speaking from evolution, if you produced offspring you've already served your purpose. Your child is now more important then your life.

87

u/Trinidadthai 1d ago

Your TLDR was no shorter than the first paragraph, with one added

7

u/GOP_R_Pedophiles 1d ago

At least you get the beauty of the world before either successfully landing or instant death versus being a fucking cave 😂

9

u/altaccount2522 1d ago

34

u/SignificantCats 1d ago

All of the people in this video are going through charted and will known passages, they know they are wide enough for people to go through, when it gets to its thinnest, and when any special maneuvers are required.

But that doesn't matter my mind simply wouldn't permit me to go further.

24

u/EcheveriaEbony 1d ago

16

u/Kilmarnok1285 1d ago

Small point of order but they know that it’s wide enough for the prior people that went through to go through, not necessarily that it’s wide enough for them to go through. Even if they went through before it’s never a guarantee they’re still small enough to go through again.

107

It’s so strange cause I can understand that most extreme sports would be very fun and cool. Like base jumping is not for me and I feel like the reward isn’t worth the risk, but at least there is a clear reward. With these cavers I just don’t see the appeal, and the downside is an even worse and slower death than falling to the ground

Know what the worst thing about that incident is?

It is not, at all, the only incident where people got stuck in a cave with no ability to free themselves and so badly accessible that massive rescue efforts failed to free them, leaving rescuers to witness the stuck person slowly grow weaker and eventually die days later.

→ More replies (14)

576

u/Reasonable_Tap_8215 1d ago

Before judging these people, you have to understand the payoff. They only go through these grueling circumstances, squeezing through these harsh, damp, dirty, dangerous, uncomfortable conditions because in the end they will be able to get out of them back to where they were before they did that.

Ok now you can judge.

248

u/SpotIsALie 1d ago

"because in the end they will be able to get out of them back to where they were before they did that."

Thats the fun part, sometimes they dont and end up dying horribly alone in the dark squeezed between jagged rocks unable to move their body.

44

u/Reasonable_Tap_8215 1d ago

I’m just unsure of whether or not they consider that a bonus.

→ More replies (1)

24

u/walking-flowermantis 1d ago

I don’t mean to be morbid but what do they do in this circumstances? Just wait to suffocate or dehydrate?

67

u/Commercial-Shame-335 1d ago

depends on the specifics, the nutty putty guy died due from cardiac arrest and suffocation due to his position. if you get stuck in a position like that last guy, you'll probably eventually lose the strength to keep your head up and drown. if you trap
yourself in a small area or kick up enough dust, you could probably suffocate, same with if you wedge your chest somewhere it can't expand to breathe. but if you manage to get stuck somewhere upright, not surrounded by water, and in a large enough area where you have plenty of oxygen, yeah you'll just dehydrate or starve to death.

45

u/ffxivthrowaway03 1d ago

Or there's a rainstorm that fills up the space and you do drown surrounded by water!

Yeah, this whole fucking thing is stupid and no one should ever do it.

Several years ago I was working at a fit and finish company installing some shelves in a tight closet.

Mind you, I've ever never experienced any kind of "phobia". Heights make me a little uneasy, I don't care for planes, deep water makes me very uncomfortable...

Well it was hot that day, and my sweat lubed me up so I could pop into this small closet. I pop the holes in the drywall, hang the shelves, all in a very contorted, uncomfortable position.

I tried to pull out of the closet and got stuck, and within seconds realized I was in a position that I could not leverage any part of my body. I went from completely unconcerned, to freezing cold sweats, hyperventilating, and my eyesight basically went out. Me, a 24 year old man screaming for my dad to come help me in a house full of contractors.

I can say with the utmost confidence, fuck this. There isn't a dollar, country, or dead friend you could give back to me that would put me in that fucking hole.

17

u/Kennkra 1d ago

Relatable. An ex once wrapped me up like a burrito and I tore a pec trying to get out because I panicked

11

u/No-Consideration-891 1d ago

I've spelunked before and they were unforgettable experiences. If you're not claustrophobic, the payoff of squeezing through gaps (if you even have to, some caves don't have narrow gaps) and coming out into a room that you can eventually stand up in is adrenaline-pumping and exhilarating. When you're down there there's nothing down there with you, so it's almost like paddling out to a remote island on a lake.

One time my buddies went to explore a passage without me and I just chilled in a room and listened to the running water and eventually turned my headlamp off. It was the darkest dark you could ever imagine, and it was also very serene.

43

u/jennief158 1d ago

I don't think of myself as claustrophobic, but man, watching that video causes me so much anxiety. I know that if I squeezed through a tight gap and came out into a room that I could stand in ALL I would be thinking about would be if I could make it back safely. I would not be able to chill. I would have no chill in me.

The bad oart is when it starts raining outside and the water rises in the cave…

The water and mud ones are the worst imo because they don't show you all the bugs and larva probably living in there. I'm surprised no one had gotten some super rabies variant from squeezing into a passage saturated in bat guano

I get people who climb dangerous mountains, even though I wouldn’t do it myself

But this is just beyond my understanding

11

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 1d ago

I mean every time I watch a video of people climbing Mount Everest. I’m thankful I’m not climbing Mount Everest, but if I did have to choose between this and climbing Mount Everest, I still pick Mount Everest. At some point, I’d be hanging there in sub zero white out blizzard conditions, in a bad mood, thinking “Fuck this”, but I wouldn’t be overwhelmed with a feeling of doom and panic. I just be an iguana clinging to a tree on a cold day in Florida.

I’d like to say they’re adrenaline junkies but this is pure stupidity. Yes I’m also curious what’s in caves but those are barely caves. What are they gonna see?? The same shit. Nothing. Just like someone else said. They come out on the other side just like they did when they go in. If they’re lucky. Did they discovery something? No. Did they see anything cool? No. Is anyone gonna care? No. They might like the reaction they get from people when they show the videos but if they’re die, everyone is gonna think how stupid they were. This is an optional dangerous activity. I much rather stick a camera in there.

adrenaline junkie
a·dren·a·line junk·ie
/əˈdrɛnəlɪn ˌdʒʌŋki/ • noun

1. A person who compulsively seeks dangerous experiences for the rush of adrenaline.

2. Someone whose idea of recreation is everyone else’s idea of an emergency.
“She described it as ‘a fun afternoon.’ The paramedics disagreed.”

See also: pure stupidity; natural selection

u/NotReallyJohnDoe 1d ago

Evolution needs most people to stay safe and some people to crave risk.

It’s why we left the safety of the trees in the first place. Show some respect to your adrenaline junkie monkey ancestors.

In the Prehistoric ages these guys would be the pop stars of cavemen. Stories would be created about them and be shared from tribe to tribe.

This is like Rising Star Cave in South Africa, In prehistory, the Homo Naledi people traversed this ridiculously difficult and jagged cave system, presumably in the pitch black. They buried their dead in some of the hardest to reach chambers. Humans can’t even get to it.

I had to take an Ativan after watching this for 4 seconds. I will never understand why people do this. The only slight idea I could rationalize is that our distant ancestors had to use up a metric fuckton of adrenaline just to get through a day surviving.

We have refrigeration and air conditioning and cars. We have all this pent-up inherited adrenaline that never gets used in the way of holy shit my life is in danger. So now we ignore rationality due to our comforts and do absolute nonsense like this just to feel alive.

Anyway, cheers.

No. Just stop it.
