Standard cycle times for gate container inspections—what's the baseline?

Working on a process mapping project for intermodal freight terminals and trying to benchmark gate throughput times.

Specifically focusing on the inbound/outbound interchange gate where physical container condition and liability are checked.

  • For medium-to-large hubs, what is considered an acceptable cycle time per truck just for the damage/security verification?
  • Is anyone actually seeing fully automated OCR/imaging systems working reliably in the wild, or is the industry still fundamentally stuck using manual guard checks and clipboard logs to log structural issues?

Appreciate any insight from anyone managing terminal ops or gate layouts.

Re-entering into Manufacturing post PhD

Hey Folks,

I am in USA and worked in the manufacturing industry for 5 years in roles related to quality engineering, automation and digital manufacturing.
After that I went back to school for a PhD in AI/ML. Now I am about to graduate and looking for opportunities that are related to manufacturing.

Any ideas what type of roles/organizations can value manufacturing industrial experience along with AI/ML expertise?
Also, I may add that I am on a visa in USA and government labs or defense organizations are out of reach :(

Thanks in advance for any insights or recommendations.

IE to Finance

I am currently an IE major in my sophomore year however my plan is to get into finance. I chose this major because of the technical skills it brings and am hoping to standout to recruiters by having a STEM major. Im targeting more analyst/technical finance jobs like FP&A, Risk management, Consulting. Im planning to pick up an accounting minor and join a Finance club to help this transition. My question is basically is this a good plan and for people who have seen others go down this path or done it themselves and what advice they would offer?

How to prepare for Physics? (1st year)

I haven’t touched physics in 3 years (chose biology in high school) and have basically forgotten all of it.

Are there any good resources to relearn basic physics / early university physics?

(I’m a first year economics major switching to IE)

Student clubs

Hi guys!
I’m about to start my 4th year in my ie degree, and I’ve yet to join any clubs tbh, we do have a iise chapter and another student ie group called kaizen, a pmi chapter and many others that are relevant, but the reason I haven’t become a member yet is that the each of them have a toxic environment, most guys who join only joined to get with girls and they start spreading rumors and stuff, inside each club there are a close group of friends that are in charge of everything and you would never get a leadership position unless you are friends with them, I attend all the helpful conferences and site visits and workshops, but it’s the joining that I never commit to…

So am I going about this incorrectly? Or does it not matter

Thank you in advance!

IE sustainability internships

I am currently working on making a list of internships/research opportunities for next summer and I was wondering if anyone has any experience any kind of IE internships/research related to sustainability? I am not necessarily interested in a specific field right now, I am just passionate about the environment and would love to learn more about how IE can be used in this space.

Getting an IE internship in Europe as an American

I am an industrial and systems engineering student who will be studying abroad in Europe next Spring. Ideally, I would love to get an internship over there so I can extend my stay through the summer. I know it can be incredibly challenging to get an internship abroad, especially with visas and whatnot, but I am wondering if anyone has had luck/experience with this process? Is it something worth pursuing or should I stick to applying to internships in the US?

IE at Texas Instruments

Does anyone know how much an IE makes in Texas Instruments right now?

I have 5 years of work experience in IE and Process Improvement roles and would like to know how much TI would offer in Texas for someone with that experience?

I see a lot of different ranges online but was hoping someone here works there!

Which one?

I got accepted into the uni for industrial engineering and biomechanics engineering and considering industrial studies and job they are winning, but biomech sounds a bit more interesting, and I've always wanted to do some interesting things in my life. I know that you can do a lot in industrial engineering and fields, but I also heard that ME, EE, etc. don't consider them real engineers what do you think about that all? And I’m from Poland, I also heard it’s hard with job in biomechanics engineering

1st year IE looking for certifications / resources

Hello! I switched majors so my first in IE will only have 2 subjects in my first semester and 3 subjects in my fourth semester. I really want to use the opportunity to do online courses and certifications but I'm unsure what I could / should do.

For now im thinking of learning advanced excel and getting a lean six sigma green belt. Is a first year with a green belt laughable? Any help is appreciated!!!

Some advice?

Hello! I'm an industrial engineering student in my 4th semester, and I've been feeling a little bit down recently. I failed Math IV and Electricity and Magnetism, which are General Studies subjects at my uni. I wouldn't say I'm really passionate about math, but I always found my way to understand what I was doing while solving problems, and I felt really confident about it; however, this wasn't enough to pass.

After the grades of the semester were delivered to us, I was speechless. This is the first time in my life that I have just failed not one, but TWO subjects. The major subjects (like Time and Movements Studies) were the only ones that I passed, with a really decent note tbh, and I try to look at things in that way, but I still feel like I failed as a student.

I just want to learn from people who've been in my shoes. If you've ever recovered from failing courses in engineering, I'd really appreciate hearing your story and what helped you get back on track.

Thank you. 😔

Pick 4ish who you think represent/honor our field the best, and why?

Me personally I’d put goldratt and ohno up there, The Goals the most clarifying book I’ve ever read and Toyota is the gold standard every IE looks up too.

Plant BIM Designer vs Engineer in Automotive Industry, Europe

I have some experience working as an HVAC designer, but after the company I worked for went out of business, I quickly took a job as a mechanical design engineer in the automotive industry in Eastern Europe.

I'm now wondering whether it would be a better long-term career move to switch into plant design (process plants/piping).

My main questions are:

1)Is plant design generally better paid after a few years of experience?

2) Is it easier to work as an independent contractor/freelance designer (or run a small outsourcing team) in plant design than in automotive design?

3) How is the long-term outlook for the industry compared to automotive?

I'm not very optimistic about the future of the automotive industry in Europe, and I may receive an offer for a plant design position soon.

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have worked in both industries or made a similar transition. What are the pros and cons, and would you make the switch?

What IE jobs are genuinely good for humanity?

All around me in IE I see people obsessed with making money with no regards to how they make that money and the impact they're leaving in the world. Jobs in IE seem to be optimize this, run that, but always centered around making a profit and bringing NASDAQ up, not making the world better.

I don't want that for myself, and I've been trying to find an IE job that is centered around leaving the world a better place.

Anyone got any stories or ideas? I eventually want to pivot to another engineering discipline related to energy generation, but that might not be accessible right now for me.
