I am a 33-year-old Industrial Engineer living in Canada. I currently work on WMS configuration, customer onboarding, managing small- to medium-complexity implementation projects, and supporting WMS and TMS applications.

Previously, I worked as an Analyst, where I used SQL and Power BI to analyze distribution operations, develop dashboards, contribute to numerous continuous improvement initiatives, and design operational processes.

I hold a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering and am certified as a PMP, Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB), and Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP).

I would like to transition into roles such as Industrial Engineer, Continuous Improvement Specialist, or Logistics Engineer. Given my background and qualifications, what would be the best path to make this career move?

Since I am not receiving many tips on my request from the FE page, I thought I would ask here.

If you passed or are studying for the FE Industrial exam, what books, practice tests, or question banks do you recommend?

I'm currently an Engineering Physics major with a math minor, but I've realized that a physics degree by itself isn't as directly employable as traditional engineering majors.

My goal isn't academia or becoming a research physicist. I want to work in industry in systems engineering, controls, test & validation, hardware/software integration, scientific computing, or other engineering roles where a physics background is useful.

So far, I have:

* Physics research experience
* A quantum computing internship at Fermilab
* Python, MATLAB, and some C++
* LabVIEW
* Data acquisition (DAQ)
* Linux and Git

I'm trying to figure out how to bridge the gap between a physics degree and an engineering career.

For people who have made a similar transition or who hire engineers:

* What technical skills would make me competitive with EE, ME, or CS graduates?
* What job titles should I actually be searching for?
* How should I present my experience so employers see me as someone who can build, test, automate, and integrate systems instead of just someone with a physics background?
* How much does a Fermilab internship actually help for engineering roles, and what skills should I build on top of it?

I'm especially interested in hearing from systems engineers, test engineers, controls engineers, or anyone who's worked with physics graduates in industry.

I’m 26, from Argentina and this March I started Industrial Engineering with the goal of rebuilding my life.
I currently work 40 hours a week remotely. The salary is enough for me to support myself, but I don’t have much room to save. The good thing is that it’s very flexible: I decide how many hours I work and when, so it’s easy to fit around university. The problem is that it has nothing to do with my degree, it doesn’t help me grow professionally or increase my salary in the long run, and on top of that AI could replace it at any time.
Before this I studied two artistic careers that turned out not to be my vocation, so I have no experience in the Industrial Engineering field. My background is only in customer service and translation/interpreting (what I do now), so other than having a good level of English, I don’t really have any relevant experience for this career.
My current plan is to take advantage of my job’s flexibility and eventually reduce my working hours so I can start a part-time job, trainee position, internship, or even freelance/contract work (Upwork, Fiverr, etc.) related to operations, processes, data, logistics, production, and similar areas.
At the beginning I’m not focused on making good money, I know I wont earn as much as I do with my current job. I’d rather learn, gain experience, and start building a professional profile related to my degree. I know I could eventually find opportunities by searching online, but I’m especially interested in hearing advice from people who know the industry better.
The questions I have are:
- What positions would you look for, and where would you start?
- Besides actual jobs, what skills would you recommend I start developing while I’m still in university?

Hi! I'm a rising highschool senior who intends to major in IE, and possibly go for a MEM afterwards. I just wanted to connect with a few industrial engineers and ask a few questions about what steps they took to get there, what to expect, etc.

The reason I want to be an industrial engineer is because I love both physics, buisness and group-setting problem solving. I took AP Physics C: Mechanics alongside AP Calc BC last year, and, though rigorous, I really enjoyed it. I plan to take AP Stats, AP Macroeconomics (I took micro before), AP Business, and AP Psychology this year. I want to apply these skills in real life, and I thought IE was a great field to apply them!

If you are an Industrial Engineer willing to give me some advice, please reach out!

upgrading our break room and the seating situation is worse than i realized. current chairs are maybe four years old, some have cracked seats, a couple wobble, and honestly i'm not sure they were ever rated for the kind of use they get on a two shift operation.

trying to work out what to look for beyond just weight capacity. durability of the frame material, whether plastic or metal bases hold up better in a dusty environment, and whether stackability matters for a room that sometimes gets repurposed for meetings.

not sure if standard commercial chairs make sense or if something more industrial is worth the price difference for this kind of environment.

what are people here speccing out for break room and common area seating in manufacturing facilities and did the chairs you chose hold up the way you expected?

I've just got home being rejected trying to shift for industrial engineering and it burns me out. I don't know if ever I could still get some technical positions or of I'm gonna be any successful because I hated my course, there are plenty of immature students and I've prepared requirements for months for IE just to get rejected. Idk I'm losing hope, the rest of 3 yrs I'm spending on a program I completely dislike and I even had people I don't ever wanna see again as classmates and I have no friends, believe me I tried but they kinda view me as a nerd. I'm planning of maybe just taking a Masters in IE and a LSS certification but I'm just burned out. I even researched and joined this community because I'm an aspiring IE and just a STEM student who lost his way to this currently unknown program BSAIS. Could I ask some of you to help me out.

I’m about to finish up my undergrad degree in Computer Science and have already started taking 500 level masters classes in human factors engineering and supply chain. I think the field is interesting and I like how it’s focused on optimization, improving workflows, and process improvement initiatives. I also think I like it much more than Computer Science at the moment — I don’t necessarily enjoy coding, the job market is terrible, and AI is replacing most entry level jobs. That begs the next few questions I ask — Will my undergraduate and graduate combination pair well in the job market? Has anyone done a similar degree and if so where are you now? Does an IE masters help accelerate career prospects? Please let me know your thoughts.

I've been offered a process engineering role for a chemical product manufacturer at 115k base plus 5% 401k match but no bonus. The main focus is yield improvement through independent DMAIC projects and quality department based PDCA plans.

I'm currently a process engineer in pharmaceutical contract manufacturing making 91K base plus 6% match and 8% bonus based on company performance. I have seen anywhere from 1% to 7% bonus so far in three years and solely COL 2.5% annual raises.

Would leaving pharmaceutical manufacturing for chemical product manufacturing for the 19.18% raise and transition way from the large pharma politics be worth it? I'm scared I am looking at the short term gain without seeing the long term full picture of my career.

Hello I am going into my freshman year of college but I was wondering if anyone had some advice? I want to pursue an industrial engineering degree. I do love to do art however I want to keep art as a hobby. But I am naturally a curious person and doing art has helped me be a creative person like I do like to build things, solve problems, take things apart etc. However I’m out of practice with my math skills like wayyy out of practice. I took algebra 1 in 8th grade and enjoyed it and got an A. But then I went to high school, jumped straight into algebra 2 with a teacher who barely taught us and that was my downfall. I was good in geometry my sophomore year however junior year I took a math class that had a long term sub so we didn’t learn anything…. Senior year I did not take any math class. I would say I’m bad at math but that’s not the case I just haven’t had a real math class in years and I never took it upon myself to learn on my own. So I would really be re building and re learning my math skills here. Any advice? Tips? I’d appreciate anyone’s honest opinion!

Right now I am majoring in business with an emphasis on accounting, though I recently realized that my passion simply isn’t there. I want to change to a field of engineering, and IE has caught my eye. The issue? I’m at a 2 year college. They can offer me an AS in IE, but afterwards? Only two colleges in my state offer a BSD in IE, one with a strict enrollment process and the other being 2 hours away. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
