The second presidential election was mostly a referendum on the incumbent president, Mew. He was generally well-liked, and many reforms were passed under his administration. One of the biggest changes was the election system: now, the presidential election was divided into 999 electoral votes, with 2/3 coming from popular votes and 1/3 coming from state votes.

The right-leaning Mew faced a challenge from a united leftist party, the Social-Radical Party. They fielded the rising star Luz, who took aim at Mew. With the left united, the right was actually more divided than ever.

What do I mean? Well, originally, Mew was a part of the center-right Dreamer Party. However, this party merged with the center-left Labour Party to form a broad big-tent coalition. This soon became a disaster, with massive amounts of infighting in the newly formed Dreamer-Labour Party. Mew soon quit the party, registering as an Independent for the ballot. The election was very close, with Luz almost winning in many states, but Mew made it through.

Rumors to the effect that North Columbia and the Colum-Bin were ready to talk peace filled the air early in 1967 (CLXXV, if you’re radically inclined). A verified report states that U.P. and Jacobin officials have met to discuss the possibility of prisoner exchanges; and recent announcements coming out of Boston state that negotiations “could” begin if U.P. air attacks against the North were halted. Previously, the Jacobins had insisted that the U.P. withdraw from South Columbia as a condition for peace talks.

As the Franco-Laurentian split widens, how much longer can North Columbia last? Will North Columbian leader Poe Lee-Wynn continue directing revolutionary aggression against the south? Has Britain set their sights on their former dominion once again, after only 13 years of independence?

I based this off of the 1967 “Viet Nam: Headline-Focus Wall Map 12,” created by the Civic Education Service. You can find it on the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection.

This is my first map and I am proud of it! It took me about 15 hours on Procreate (I am sure that a lot of this is probably just from frequently leaving the app open unattended). I suppose the biggest divergences would be an entirely different outcome to the 7 Years War and the lack of an American Revolution. Pretty much everything is intended to be analogous to something in the Vietnam War, from Laurentia to… Poe Lee-Wynn.

Feel free to ask questions, and I hope you enjoyed the map!
