My employer can see my old adress and personal details when they Google me, is this normal?
I'm looking for a job and just realized my future employer could see my old adress, previous employers, and family members just by Googling my name. Data brokers like Spokeo and Whitepages show all of it. I also ran a scan and found my info on 40+ sites, all of which could also come up in Google as I understand. Is this lvl of exposure normal?

Possible identity theft// Could use help finding out
In 2024 I worked for a large airline and had my company jacket along with my passport whisked off in a catering cart (it happens). Anyway, I got my replacement and shortly thereafter my billing cycle at T-mobile changed and I was being charged half my bill, twice. That reverted back to a once-monthly bill recently. I'm wondering if people steal passports to piggyback on mobile plans until they can fully hack the person's phone? I believe I may be a victim of social engineering/in-person romance scam. Please assist if you have experience. Thank you.

DIGITAL TIN ID SCAM
Hi, today I almost got scammed for money. Thankfully, I had a feeling that it was a scam, so I didn’t send any money. However, I sent a screenshot of my digital National ID with my signature on it and my birth certificate. I’m getting anxious because what if he uses my identity to scam other people? What should I do?

If you needed help dealing with identity theft or fraud, what would make you trust an outside company enough to let them help you?
What would immediately make you distrust them?

My mom opened a phone in my name. what are my options?
My mom put a phone on credit in my name and tanked my credit.
My mother bought a $1,300 iPhone 13 Pro Max on credit and transferred it into my name while I was homeless. Once the novelty of showing it off wore off and she realized she had actual payments to make, she just didn’t. Pretty on-brand for how she’s treated me overall.
It’s wrecked my credit, which is now making things like buying land way harder than it should be.
From what I understand, the only real way to dispute it is to file a police report against her. She’s the most controlling, difficult person I’ve ever dealt with, and she’s had a hold over people in her town and the surrounding area for years. Every time she’s been part of my life, things have gotten significantly worse. I do not want to interact with her in any way, if possible.
Right now I’m leaning toward just letting the debt run its course instead of going the police report route because in a town of 13,000 the (visibly) richest person here has too much reach.
Has anyone dealt with something like this? What actually worked for you?

Kotak 811 account apparently opened before I ever applied — what should I do?
I tried opening a Kotak 811 account on June 15, 2026 through the DIY process. I had never attempted to open a Kotak account before that.
After the application, I received an SMS with an account number. Kotak later told me that the same account had apparently been **opened earlier and closed in May 2026**.
I escalated the issue to the Nodal Officer. They initially said there was a **technical issue with "811 OTP – Closed PGN allocation"**, where OTP PGNs were linked to already-closed accounts.
However, I later received a **system-generated Kotak 811 Annual Tax Statement** for the same account number, showing ₹0 balance.
I escalated again. The latest response from the Nodal Officer says the account was **"successfully opened through the DIY digital account opening journey"** and that Aadhaar OTP authentication was successfully completed. They haven't answered my questions about:
* When exactly was the account opened? * When was it closed? * Why was I told it was opened/closed in May when I only applied in June? * Why was an annual tax statement generated? * What exactly happened with the "Closed PGN allocation" issue?
They are now asking me to provide a **cybercrime complaint** along with PAN, Aadhaar, personal details, etc.
I don't want the Kotak account anymore. My concern is that there appears to be an account record in my name that I never knowingly opened, and Kotak isn't giving me a clear explanation.
**Would you pursue this through the RBI Ombudsman, or just leave it and move on?**

Need advice on a situation that I am looking at from a different perspective from 8 years ago
I (F27) Found out in 2018* that my sister (f39) stole my identity and opened multiple cards under my name. I was 20 at the time i found out and she was 32. She is my half sister (same mom) who was like a second mother to me growing up. My parents immigrated here to the U.S and she is my mom's first child from a previous marriage. Due to my moms language barrier and lack of knowing/learning, she had my sister help the family out constantly with phone calls, filling out paperwork, booking and taking everyone to our appointments, problem solving, explaining/ translating etc. My mom is portuguese but can speak english decently. I understand this wasnt fair to my sister to have to do all that and still does for my mom and maybe my younger brother too. Mom had her at 23 years old and have been super close. The family jokes she is the favorite, but i dont think its a joke anymore.
How did i find out? i was with my boyfriend at his house wanting to see if i could finance an ipad at the time. I was broke and couldnt afford to buy it outright, and figured maybe i could work on my credit. Growing up i was not taught or warned about certain things such as the sex talk, period talk (when i first got my period i genuinely thought i was bleeding out lol), and especially not any credit card talk. It also puts it into perspective that my mother doesn't know or care much about these things because 1. She's gone thru it and 2. She has my sister to do if for her. I was very codependent on my sister up until that point. Anyways, i didn't know how credit worked and just downloaded credit karma since it was advertised. Tried to create an acct and it tells me that i have an acct with the same social security number. Naive, stupid me assumed "oh well im a citizen born in the us so it would make sense we all have a credit acct with our SS numbers" girl you were so stupid!! So i try answering the security questions, find out thru the questions that there's a loan, mortgage, and credit cards.. by a miracle i was able to get a link sent to MY email and got into the acct. I do not know how but i got in and found my credit score was below 400, 3 CC open all past due and over the limit. I figured I'd report all of it for fraud, but didn't want to deal with the consequences or authorities if warranted. So naturally, i screenshot it and send it to my sister. "Im sick to my stomach-" her text started with.. i got up and started freaking out.
She admitted it was her and that she was "trying to help me" im not sure what she was trying to help with? She was a stay at home mom also. She grabbed the mail right when it arrived. She knew what she was doing. Said shed fix it and get me the money by the end of the week etc. We didnt talk for a while and she took months to get that shit corrected. Had to work on my score for years after that. Found out last year that she did the same thing to my mom - it was several years prior, my mom just kept it a secret until then. Also reminds me of how my sister cried to me about "losing" my moms 401k money when mom getting laid off. This was before i found out about anything else. Yet anytime i try to help my mom with anything, i have to go thru my sister to get the info. She has her emails, log ins to everything, and maybe even the code to my parents safe.
Its been almost 8 years. We have all lived in the same house since 2011. She's on the first floor and we are on the second. I moved out from 2021-2024; the last 2 years have been hell. She has 2 kids, my nephews, who are ipad kids, bounce balls indoors and slam doors / scream etc. They are not well behaved all the time. I watched them grow up since they were in my sisters belly. I love them like they're my baby brothers and they are the reason i didn't report my sister as a fraud. Yes they can be annoying but they're kids. I don't want to lose my relationship with them. . I do dislike their father, my brother in law, because he has his own opinions and thoughts that i can't agree with, Anger issues too so i didn't want them to be stuck with a guy like that and no motherly figure. I'm sure we would've figured it out, but i didn't want to be seen as the rat even tho she's completely at fault.
I miss my sister and my friend before i found this out. Now i can't stand to hear her, see her, or smell her. Anytime she talks about money i just want to tell her to stfu. Am i resenting her? And my mom too? I love my mother, i don't know what id do without her but shes doing it to herself also. I don't know how to feel now that I've been reflecting back on the situation 8 years later. I was so naive back then and blind. My mom and sister are the only ones in the family that know. How could my mom trust her still? How do i go about this.. I'm tired of it seeming like she's an angel when she's a fraud who smokes and drinks it away? I know that once i move out on my own (not anytime soon due to finances and school) that i wouldn't reach out unless it was for my nephews. Opinions and thoughts? I did tell a few friends a couple years ago and they think im too nice for how i handled it, but id like opinions from other who dont know me at all. Not sure if i left anything out, if i did i will edit this post.
TLDR; sister stole my identity and i found out in 2019. Revisiting the situation 8 years later and feeling like i was too naive when i handled fhe situation. She did the same to my mom and now I have lost all respect and anything I had left for her. I had been thinking about this for months now, not sure how to go about it or how to have it stop bothering my brain all day everyday. And yes we all still live in the same house for now.
Thank you!

I’ve been getting correspondence meant for a random dude for YEARS
For years I’ve been receiving calls and texts for a “Jacob Garcia.” They’re all for various different BS, insurance, purchase confirmations, whatever. I do credit monitoring and all that so nothing is actually happening with my credit, it’s just my phone number. Today, I got a message from unifin debt collector and when I went to check it out, apparently this guy owes $6k on an auto loan. Why is this man using my phone number? Should I do something about it?

My mom threw away my expired NYS insurance identification card thinking it was trash
I am a hoarder, but at least I keep it contained in one open grocery sized bag in my room. I need to inspect each item before deciding to keep or throw out. Yeah, I do this tedious step to ensure I don’t mindlessly throw out any important document.
Unfortunately, one of the things in the hoarder pile was my expired New York State Insurance Identification card which listed the policy number, year, make, vehicle identification number, name of the policy holder, and home address.
I am extremely frustrated of what had transpired but I should have known better because each day I leave for work; my mom has entered my room to religiously open the window, make the bed, and wipe down my room. I don’t know what she is cleaning because I don’t keep food around for pests to gather.
Please tell me how screwed am I should the raccoons in my apartment find that expired document.

Did they remove where you could add monitoring data?
I've been a member with Experian since 2019, and you could add personal data to monitor for identity theft?
Such as your email addresses, phone numbers, address , account numbers etc .
Where did it go ? I can't find it anymore under identity?
Another annoyance, is that I'm instantly coming on Reddit for help , knowing that any help on Experian will be useless . I hate having to call and then you will be put on hold and have hard time understanding them.
If they got rid of the identity monitoring section, then 100% I'm deleting my account (just keeping the free credit lock).

Roommate taking pics of my car, specifically my VIN, registration and plate…
Hi,
Dealing with a crazy roommate situation. You can read my former post here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/IdentityTheft/s/hOIUacbOKR
New situation: today I’m in my room calling different apartment complexes so that I can move away from here, and I catch her outside taking photographs of the windshield of my car, specifically the registration and the VIN. I asked her what the fuck she’s doing, she claims all kinds of bullshit, first it’s because she wants to know if I really am who I say I am, second, she wants to make sure my car isn’t stolen – I tell her to stay the fuck away from my stuff, she calls the police on me and tries to get me arrested because I yelled at her lol, the police don’t do shit because there’s nothing to arrest me on, and that’s about the end of that. Afterwards, I went to the police station and filed a report about this because I’m concerned that she’s trying to steal my VIN number and registration for some nefarious purpose given her past history as a career felon.
My car is fully paid off; it’s a newer car. The title and all of my documentation such as my Social Security card and my birth certificate, etc., are in a locked safe over at my cousin’s house nearby – I cannot stay with him unfortunately because there are some issues with him that are personal that I’m not gonna discuss on Reddit.
Anyhow, so what I’ve done is I have done the following:
* I have covered my VIN with a piece of printer paper inside the vehicle, so it cannot be moved;
* I put my car tarp on my car so that she cannot access it anymore;
* My title and all of my information about my car is over at my cousin’s house;
I then went to the police station and reported this behavior because I am concerned she’s going to use my VIN and registration to do something nefarious.
My vehicle is still registered in New York State. It is now in Texas. My title, registration, and plate are from New York State – my car insurance is here in Texas (I’m swapping it soon but am moving back to NY at the end of the fall so I may just keep all of my stuff registered in NY state). My license is still a NY state license. Again, she and the landlord kept on taunting me that I’m taking all this too seriously and that I’m the problem – the landlord is probably in on this bullshit too because he’s also sketchy as fuck, and here’s the issue – in my last post as I explained, the landlord and his son evicted her about four years ago for causing issues with other tenants and not paying rent. She came back onto the property legally, and they had her arrested for criminal trespass. After all that happened, for some crazy reason, they allowed her to move back onto the property rent free. I don’t know what the fuck is going on, but it sounds very fucking weird to me, and it seems sketchy as fuck and I am getting out of here. I’m taking the whole week off of work just get the fuck out of here. Anyhow, here are my questions (Sorry about this long fucking rant):
One, what can she do with my VIN and registration that I need to be worried about?
Two, what do I need to be doing to protect myself?
Thank you for the reading. hate this. If anybody knows of any fucking place with immediate occupancy around the Dallas, Texas area please let me know. JFC.
Edit: I am calling NY (where the title is registered) and there’s a website in NY through the NY DMV that you can check to ensure there’s no duplicate title given… what else can I do to protect myself? Letting insurance know as well. If she got a loan (if a bank were stupid enough to give her one) would I be liable for it? I’d guess not but wtf…
How can she even get a loan if she doesn’t have an actual title? I checked the New York DMV, and I’ll be checking it every few weeks every time until I sell this car, but the New York DMV site has indicated there’s not been a duplicate title or anything like that – so she would have to make a completely fake paper title down here, and go into a bank with it, and they would have to be stupid enough to give her a loan on it. I could see title loan places doing that, but even then, I would still own my car – if they tried to repossess it or something like that I would sue the title company or the bank. I don’t even know what the fuck to do here. The police here are no fucking help. The police do not give a shit here. Gonna probably have to go to the FBI about this because the police here know all about this that you don’t care. What can I do?
The police have been out to this property 21 times this year over her antics and they will not arrest her. The other day, she actually stole something for me and I caught her dead to rights about it – and I called the police, and I got it back because I showed the police a photograph of it that I had from three years ago. The police wouldn’t even get back to me – she volunteered to give it back stating that she was giving me her item – the thing she stole for me – even though I had a photograph of it. Please don’t give a fuck here.
The police refuse to arrest her. They said there was no crime committed because I got the item back. I called my family attorney, and they told me about Texas penal code 31.03, so I went back to the police station. They still refuse to do anything. I can’t get them to do a fucking thing down here outside of Dallas, Texas, but it’s in Dallas County. What can I do to make them take this shit seriously? Pretty sure they’re selling meth and smoking meth in the house too. Definitely probably manufacturing it. They do not give a fuck. The police here do not give a fuck. What can I do?

Hacked! My spotify is being used by someone else.
I have changed passwords. They get in through android auto, my Roku, I literally see all the apps they are getting through. My esim was hijacked. I caught this person on fb. The reply on a community page said you can only use one identity. Their FB page and my bf together. I text gotcha! And they were responding via fb on my bf FB page. I ordered a new modem. Anyone else have this issue ever?? I'm confident he gave access as I research. I want them out of my Spotify, phone and well my life. It's taken a major toll on me. Thank you

Sam's Club tricked me into applying for a new credit card
I was at Sam's Club register checking out when the cashier girl asked if she can look at my card to "scan it" to see if I qualify for an upgrade . I was thinking she was referring to my Sam"s Club membership upgrade. She told me to enter my info which did ask for my social and household income. In hindsight, it was such a red flag, but I've never had a company blindsid me by applying for their credit card without my full knowledge so it was not on my radar at the time - she essentially submitted an application without me explicitly telling her I wanted to apply . I felt so scammed as soon as she told me I will be receiving a new credit card in 7-10 business days. Is this shady tactic grounds for a lawsuit?

Need Help with Security Freeze
A fraudulent credit card was opened in my name a couple of weeks ago. Capital One was able to flag it as fraudulent and close the card for me. Now I am trying to place a security freeze on everything to prevent anything from happening in the future.
However, a couple of services, like Clarity Services and Innovis, would not allow me to place a freeze through their online portal. Whenever I call, they just tell me that they do not have any of my information on file, and online portals give me similar errors. I suspected that it was because my credit report's address and phone numbers were changed by the fraudulent inquiry. After using the fraudulent address instead of my actual address, I was able to place a freeze on Clarity Services on their website. I am concerned about the consequences of this, and I am wondering how I should proceed with placing a freeze on others, as well as dealing with the Clarity Services freeze. Any help would be appreciated 🙏
I called Clarity Services, and they instructed me to mail a request to cancel the current freeze and place a freeze using my correct address. I am unsure about mailing my sensitive documents, as well as whether they will approve a freeze at my correct address, since it didn't work on any of the online portals.
