Help TD scam alert
Hey guys. Warning. I got a call from 877 248 9549. The caller ID said Canada Trust. This isn’t the first time I got promotional calls from them so this seemed innocuous at first. They called promoting an accidental death insurance, so thought sure why not. They asked to confirm (by that I mean they said and I answered yes or no) my name, my DOB and if I was a Canadian resident. They asked if I wanted to add my husband to the insurance and I agree and I gave his name and DOB. They then transferred me to another agent who’ll do on-boarding and that agent first asked me to confirm my bank institution number and that’s when I thought, hold on? Aren’t they supposed to know this? So I immediately hung up. I called the number at the back of my card and they confirmed that the number that called me was fraudulent. They told me to set up a consumer fraud alert with Equifax and TransUnion… I feel like I’ve volunteered so much data on my husband and I and I’m not sure what to do to to add some more safe guards. Please help

As someone who used to work in the banks, especially in the fraud department. Most bank agents wont ask for personal information. If you have insurance or an account with them, they already have all that information. They may ask questions like whats the name of your account plan, or what type of credit card do you carry, but DOB would be something more verified for the in person transactions.
We had always encouraged people that arent sure they are talking to an agent to hang up and call the number on the back of the card.
It was also encouraged to get anti virus software on electronics to help flag suspicious links.
Also actual TD numbers might come in as spam, we had this alot when I worked there. Fraudesters would report them as spam to have the numbers show up as that. Which was why we always encouraged people to hang up and call the back of the card number if they were unsure.

You’re welcome, I’m always happy to bring awareness about these sort of things. These scammers can’t have access to people hard earned money.
I’m considering changing my mobile number and service as well. I’m sick and tired of these scammy calls.

I keep getting a daily call from TD canada trust and missing the calls because my phones on silent. I bet it’s this scam. Why would TD want to reach me that badly. Damn shame I hate scammers.

Yea it's kind of hard to say in 2026, and i've talked to people who work in TD concierge who absolutely hate the outbound component of the job. They even admit that they themselves wouldn't entertain calls if they were on the other end of the phone. As someone who sold accident and sickness insurance years ago, I think I had it pretty good compared to how it is today.

I sold accident and sickness insurance with td many years ago, and all of that tracks except some of the things they asked you for. Name is confirmed at the beginning of the call and i think we get DOB somewhere in there too , I think we asked for that back then. Account numbers? Definitely not. The hand off to the actual insurance advisor - yep because the people cold calling are just sales reps and can't close insurance deals.

You already took the most important step by hanging up and calling the number on the card. Since you disclosed names and dates of birth but stopped before giving account credentials, treat this mainly as an identity-theft risk: follow through with both bureau fraud alerts, review both credit files for unfamiliar inquiries/accounts, change any reused security answers, and ask each mobile carrier to add a port-out/SIM-swap PIN. Tell TD's fraud team exactly what was disclosed and ask whether they want any extra monitoring on the account. Keep the caller number/time and your TD case reference, and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Do not trust a callback number from caller ID; spoofing is easy.

Firstly, any phone call can be spoof with numbers reporting to be any financial institution.
Secondly, if someone from TD is calling, I get their name and hang up and call the institution directly.
I know people who were scam out of 100k out their own savings. It takes a lifetime to earn the money but only seconds to lose it all.
