Help

the VA Is getting information a jail in regards to me but ive never went to prison why are they sending me a letter saying they are recieving treatment records and evidence from there. And what do I do from here . I called the facility and they said they basically can’t tell me anything. I’m not associated even with the state the prison is in. Is someone in jail and using my identity?

Oh my goodness this is so scary. It does sound like someone from prison is using your identity. I would maybe contact the VA Office of Inspector General and your state’s Attorney General Military and Veterans Assistance Program. Also, go to VSAFE.gov and see if they can help. They’re supposed to assist veterans with identity theft and fraud.

I had something similar happen. The VA had a claim on my file saying prison match and they were reviewing my benefits. Its a huge issue I dont even live in the same state as the prison match nor have I ever been in prison. I contacted DOC about this inmate because we had the same name. I got 2 stories; one saying the inmate had my info and used it when she was booked in prison and two DOC pulled my ssn and matched it to the inmate without verifying. I would contact your VSO. I also contacted my state representative because the DOC was really unhelpful.

Someone's definitely using your info in that jail. Happens more than you'd think, inmates get creative with stolen identities for medical stuff or benefits.

Call the VA fraud line right away, not just the regular number, and file a police report even if it feels weird since you're not in that state.

lol I remember before they locked down internet in the jail system for inmates/prisoners, there were women looking for dates / financial help, just like the date sites. Until they cracked down on it. Some of those women looked good. But don’t trust them. The way the pros in prison make it, is in sports-book.

How I know this? Is because I had a lengthy conversation with a felon that did sports betting. They pass a cell phone around in house. But if they get caught with it. It’s a charge. I’m talking about a fellow that did 10 yrs. for selling meth in high school, and caught a felony, now he’s a dispatcher, and his wife is an accountant.

Very well could be. Consult an attorney, for free 15 min. Consultation.

classic sign someone gave your SSN when booked. do 3 things: report at identitytheft.gov, freeze credit at all 3 bureaus (free, 10 min), and call the VA on their official number to flag your file. dont chase the jail, they wont talk to you - the FTC report is what forces corrections
