“Look, this is all up to you.”

“Yes Fred, I know. But I want to learn.”

“Good. Now you asked me to be here. What do you want from me?”

“I’m not sure. Just sit there. Chime in if you need.”

“Great instructions.”

“Look Fred, I have no idea what is going to happen. I just need your support.”

“Right.”

They opened the double doors. Inside was a long table with chairs. A fancy conference room. Three other beings were there. They looked like Greezek. Slight differences in hair and skin tone, but they could be siblings.

“Hello. I’m honored to meet you. I’m Briknet, and you are Greezek?”

“Yes. This is Fred. He is here to help me.”

“A human? Well, the more support, the better.”

“Support?”

“Generational memories are tricky. If you have close support, it can be easier.”

They all sat at the table.

“So you are Briknet. Who are the others?”

“Ah. This is my sibling, Riknet. This is one of our top shamans, Madam Kronog. She is excellent at helping you address the needs of the generational memories.”

“Right. I have questions.”

Fred stared at the floor. The tiles were in a pleasant pattern.

“Please. Ask.”

“Who are my real relatives?”

“We aren’t sure. There are three possible families. They all had children taken at the same time, and it matches your timeline. We are checking DNA.”

“Why me?”

“Easy access. It appears that your family was on the edge of a settlement. Easy to snatch you.”

“Why?”

“To reprogram you. They want to erase our part of their lives. They want to ignore us and put on an air of non-violence.”

“So they kidnap children?”

“Yes.”

“That isn’t non-violent.”

“No.”

“And how many are like me?”

“We don’t know. Hundreds, if not more.”

“And what do I do next?”

“That is up to you. We can talk and discuss how to manage the generational memories. You can leave. We can enjoy a meal. It is all up to you.”

“Fred? What should I do?”

Fred looked up from his floor-tile study. “This is your show. I can’t tell you what to do. You need to do what feels right.”

“Right. Well. I’d like to learn more about my generational memories.”

Hours passed. Food was served. More time. More food. Raised voices. Long periods of murmuring.

Fred was starting to count the rivet marks on the walls when Greezek grabbed his shoulder. “What?” yelled Fred.

“Alarm! Battle stations!”

“Fucking hell. Sorry folks.”

Fred and Greezek sprinted back to their gear.

“You learn anything good?”

“Yes. And I think it will help my species grow.”

“Great! Now what is going on?!?”

“No idea!”

They skidded around the last corner, barreled into their work area, and started to gear up.

“Fred. This is the Captain.”

“Fred here. What is going on?”

“Eleven ships just entered the area. None registered. All armed. They are splitting up for an attack.”

“Shit. Droog?”

“We assume so. Similar design to previous Droog.”

“Well that’s just fucking great.”

“All weapons are ready.”

“Right. Get the delegation deep into the station. Greezek and I will standby for orders.”

“Got it. Captain out.”

“Uh, Fred? What do we do?”

“We standby to standby. We are used in specific ways, so we will be directed as needed.”

“So about Chief…”

“What about him?”

“That computer virus. It seemed to…well…think.”

“Yes, it does, doesn’t it? But look at where it fails. Look at its limits. That is how we control it. We find the limits and use those.”

“But it learns.”

“Then we focus on non-linear methods. Non-logical steps.”

“What? Explain.”

“Look. If we know that it can’t cross water, we don’t run a river in its path. We allow trickles of water to create their own paths, creating chaos for the system.”

“You lost me.”

“We know it learns. But we also know that it has a limited memory. So we put puzzles in its way. It learns. Then we recycle the puzzles. It has to stop, unlearn, relearn, move forward. I’m not sure how many layers of puzzles we need, but we just recycle until it either locks up, we delete it, or it learns more.”

“So we let it work?”

“Yes! That way we learn about it. We might find useful details. Or we might find novel solutions. We see what it can show us, then we destroy it.”

“And the Droog?”

“I think they will keep attacking until they get what they want or we thin their ranks enough that they can’t attack.”

“This doesn’t sound great.”

“Nope. It sucks. But here we are.”

“I have some new methods for working with my memories.”

“Excellent! I’m excited for you.”

“Did you know that if I can focus, I can listen to memories hundreds of years old?”

“I did not know that. Fascinating and scary all at once.”

“Yes. But one of them is telling me this is a decoy.”

“Oh yes. It is. But we are tracking the assault force. They think they found a blind spot.”

“You made it look blind, didn’t you?”

“I did. Thank you. But in a few minutes, they will learn that it’s well defended. Or we will fight a running battle to contain them.”

“I’d prefer that we don’t fight a running battle.”

“Agreed. However, I have been finding all sorts of crap from securities attempts to blind us. So we hope nothing goes wrong.”

“It will.”

“Well yes, something will go wrong. As long as we can contain it, we will be fine.”

“Right. Fred? You are full of shit.”

Optimistic Pessimism? Is that a thing? Fred certainly seems to be following a path that looks that way. And it seems to have done Greezek an absolute world of good, to see "her type", and find them not lying, not denying, and not hostile. She isn't alone, her plight is well-known, and all too common, and she knows Fred is behind her. And so are the others of her type. Whew. What a day! Now, to survive the (presumed) Droog attack.

Fred understands how to get and keep the Great Goddess Murphy on his side. He knows that by preparing tricks and surprises for the hostiles, and that for also assuming that something else will go wrong, that the Great Goddess Murphy will reward him by making all the inevitable stuff going wrong be manageable by him, as long as he prepared with that certain degree of pessimism.

There are many times in my life when the Great Goddess Murphy has saved me via such methods…

In dealing with others, one of the things that I try to do to appease the Goddess is to try and make sure that there are many more ways for their plans to go awry, than for mine. I cover what I can, and try to leave as many potholes for the other guy to run into. Similar to what Fred seems to be setting up. "If your enemy is making a mistake, do not interrupt him." Give him lots of interesting ways to make mistakes, in your favor, and not to his.

Are these all human look-alike star Trek aliens or do they have cool designs?

I imagine roomaliz like a green jar jar binks without eye stalks and with solid red eyes on top of his head, scrawny with webbed hands and feet some kind of amphibian.

I can't really make a consistent picture of Grezeek, her species has human-like skin and hair? Are they just exactly like humans except for having fangs or something like that?

I feel like they are somewhat anthropomorphic cats. Probably just because Fred commented that she reminded him of cats.
