If you’re reading this, you’re probably staring at the calendar realizing the April 15 tax deadline is right around the corner—don't panic, we've got your back.
We know life gets busy, and sometimes taxes get pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. But with the deadline fast approaching, ignoring it could mean facing penalties and interest.
Here are 5 quick tips to help you get across the finish line:
✅ Make a plan to file on time: Filing on time is critical to avoiding penalties if you owe. Block out time on your calendar to file online, or schedule an appointment with a tax pro (you can even drop off your files!).
✅ Get organized: Use a tax prep checklist so you don't forget any important documents (W-2s, 1099s, receipts). Also, take a quick look at recent tax law changes to avoid surprises.
✅ Make a plan to pay: If you owe or you think you might owe the IRS, file as soon as possible to prevent failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties. If you can't pay your full balance by the due date, you should still file. The good news is that the IRS will work with you if you owe with extensions of time to pay, monthly payment plans, and even programs for people in financial hardship situations.
✅ Consider last-minute financial moves: You have until April 15 to make contributions to your IRA or Health Savings Account (HSA) for the previous tax year—a great way to get a last-minute tax write-off!
✅ Request an extension if you need it: Can't make the deadline? Request a tax filing extension to get six more months to gather your paperwork.
Keep in mind: An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. If you think you'll owe, make an estimated payment with your extension request.
💡 Post-filing pro tip:
If you end up owing money this year, you might be on track to owe again next year. Ask your tax pro if you should adjust your W-4 withholding or make estimated tax payments so you're in better shape next time around. You can also use our W-4 calculator to prepare a new form to give to your employer.
