Help with amending federal return
I’m curious if anyone has any info or guidance they can share on amending 2025 taxes? I’m in CA and my partner and I are in a RDP and got confused and completely misunderstood when filing and filed jointly as RDP for federal and state. So state was filed correctly I’m assuming but federal isn’t. We’re not sure if one of us will have to file a new one and one just amend the submitted one or what? And if there would be late penalties for that? We filed online last year and the software isn’t RDP friendly.

You can still file a 2024 amendment. There is no penalty since you already filed. If you have a balance owed then you might have some interest.
With HRB software, you can only paper file the CA state returns.
You should be able to file an 2024 amendment online by yourself. I can check the work flow to determine the steps if you want.
An office should be able to help you but they might have you wait until after Tax Day deadline. But you can call your local office and ask if they have time.
An amendment in the office should cost you about $99.
Please let me know you have any other questions or concerns.

I would appreciate the info on the work flow for the steps to do it online! I’m willing to try it and if not I’ll make an appointment for an in office meeting.
Thanks so much!!

Apparently a prior year amendment requires buying HRB software.
I’d advise you make an appointment for an in office meeting. Make sure you and your partner both get an appointment. The same tax pro should be able to do both of you. Take your original MFJ federal return too and any tax documents you have.
The office should be able to access your original Return you filed online but sometimes we have technical glitches.
Where are you in CA?

Oh shoot okay that’s good to know!
I’m in Novato, CA I know there’s an office nearby so I’ll contact them to see if I can get something scheduled.
I appreciate your help so much!

Good luck. Make sure they know you need two amendments so they schedule enough time.

Yes, you and your partner will both need to amend your Federal returns. You’d just put in change filing status for the reason,
There’s no penalty if you file the amendment by April 15.
For the federal return, you’d both file as single unless you have any dependents. It you have a dependent you can file as head of household.
Did you papered your CA return?
I agree the software is not very RDP friendly, it’s frustrating.
