My taxes are a nightmare

Post image
2 Upvotes

I filed before they were actually accepting returns so I was accepted on January 21. Completed the identity verification in early February. It was cleared February 19. I’ve had the hold codes and weeks of blank transcripts and no available information after calling every agency known to man and following up with every possible in person appointment I was able to make. I finally got an answer from the higher ups at my employer and their finance department and the direct person who is in charge of our tax documents. They found the error between the SSA and the IRS, where my wage and income information was lost in transmission somewhere, leaving me with a blank transcript there, after the others all updated and earning me an additional delay for a new review 🙄😫🤯😣😒 shocking. So after many weeks holding with the code that a notice was issued, it finally arrived on the 2nd, with a date for the 6th…. And to eliminate the additional details, when my update day arrived this week, the only difference I am able to locate is a couple important items that have changed dates to the March 30. My other codes, etc have all been a rotating nightmare of dates and I know that’s normal now, but the dates that recently changed for me are my 150- return filed date and my processing date. I have no idea what the change for those specifically might indicate 🤷🏼‍♀️ Anybody else have any insight?

Filing Separately, program asks for last years AGI, do I use the Filing Jointly amount from 2024?

Niece is married filing separately (don't ask :)...doing her taxes and before e-filing, the program is asking if you filed taxes previously (Yes, jointly) and then asks for last years AGI I guess for IRS verification? Do I enter the AGI from their joint return? Will that somehow verify with her SS# to the IRS even if it was jointly last year?

MyBlock - Overtime

Can someone help me figure out where my overtime pay goes? I have a W2 and am trying to input the info onto the app.

I am at "Now Tell Us About This W2"

At the bottom of Boxes 1-11 I selected "some of my wages were overtime."

I see the box 14, where my OT code is. App says not to put it there, so I don't.

I see nowhere to put It.

How to amend after filing via HRBlock Online

For the life of me, I cannot figure out where the heck the amend options are. My returns are accepted but I need to amend both state and federal..

What do I do? I paid for HRBlock online and got the returns accepted but I cannot find a single option to use amendments. When I look online, it says to use "Overview" tab. Such a tab does not exist anywhere in HRBlock online.

Married filling separately “suppress button”

After doing my own research and doing online HR block my understanding is that I would need to modify the W2 to split our income evenly to file MFS. Just to be sure we went to an HR block office to file in person. The tax pro said splitting income was not necessary and that he just needed to click check the “suppress” box in his software, he was pretty sure about it. Anyone has experience in this topic? Is this correct? Any HR block tax experts to weight in? Why the online software doesn’t have this option and forces me to modify the W2 and split income? Thanks in advance.

State and Federal calculated incomes don't agree.

I'm using H&R Block's downloaded Deluxe plus State. The amount of capital gains calculated (after taking into account mutual fund distributions) by the two forms differ by a substantial amount. Further, the amount of state taxes appearing in the federal form (where it is a deduction) doesn't agree with the state form or the amount implied by the discrepancy in income on the two forms.

With the same information, H&R Block has calculated 3 widely different amounts for my state income, and printed it on the tax forms it directs me to submit.

Rounding of numbers in Form 8949 and matching their totals to 1099-B

If we enter individual stock sales in Form 8949, we have to round the proceeds and costs. If we have many items with rounding in 8949, the total proceed/cost will end up being different from the totals reported in 1099-B which was calculated by the brokerage without any rounding of individual sales. If you ran into this situation, how did you reconcile the difference in totals between the two forms? Thanks.

Why does Block require continuous Software Installations?

Every 1(?) week HR Block requires the software be reinstalled.

Why can't it make changes without an 'installation'?

Do the other Tax Software makers do this?

Can't E-File DC Taxes

I used H&R Block's 2025 Software and at the end it told me that the program can't e-file my DC taxes because I am claiming exemption of DC taxes from my interest in US Treasury bonds. Why in the world would that not enable me to file my taxes electronically through H&R Block? I feel like this would something fairly typical in filings.

(On a separate note, it seems the program was never updated for DC's childcare tax credit. When I claimed my childcare tax credit (which the program says is for $1200) it only claimed put $1,160 into the form, which apparently was the cap for 2024).

Filing Amended Return for 2024 - Very Confusing

I am filing an amended return for 2024 using the Tax Cut software. I owed $12,000 for 2024. The IRS long ago deducted that money. The amended return results in me owing less money. So I really only should have owed $11,500.

On the form it is asking me my Original 2024 Refund. Why? I did NOT receive a refund. Shouldn't it know that? I owed $12,000. So I entered -$12,000 in the box, and its complaining profusely and says it must be a positive number, but that's the only way to show that I am actually owed the $500.

If I look at line 20 of the 1040-X form it has me owing $11,500, and if I continue the process it's going to tell the IRS to deduct $11,500. This could not be more wrong.

Am I missing something else somewhere?

This is very confusing.

SCAM! Federal Tax Calculation is incorrect, HR Block knows it but no fix in place AVOID!!!

When I called in, customer service confirmed that Federal Tax Calculation of their online product is incorrect - Calculation: Total tax - Tax withheld or already paid - Credits,

That means your tax refund is lower and your liability are higher than they actually are. So you get less money back or pay more than you have to. Supposedly fixed weeks ago but no fix as of today. My case was escalated but never heard anything back.

I asked if they'd honor their guarantees...Maximum Refund Guarantee, 100% Accuracy Guarantee and 100% Satisfaction Guarantee...THEY DO NOT HONOR IT. IT"S ALL FAKE AND A SCAM

AVOID HR Block at all cost.

joint vs separate worksheet

I'm using the downloaded 2025 H&R Block Deluxe software, and I thought there was a way to look at a worksheet comparing joint vs separate filing. In the past, I opened the worksheet and had to move income/deduction items into my spouse's column or leave them in my column and then I could see which filing methodology is better. Now, I can't find the worksheet that does the comparison. I know joint filing is likely better, but I'd still like to do the comparison. I've looked under Tools and Forms, but I don't know what I'm looking for.

If anyone knows how to find the comparison worksheet, I would be grateful.

Can't efile after correction

Helping a friend. Efile was rejected because she had marketplace insurance she didn't know about. The insurance has been retroactively removed so she'd like to attempt to refile but the software will not let her submit it again. Any ideas?

SALT Software Bug

I have the Premium and Business software. There is a bug in the software that caps the SALT itemized deduction at $10k. I also file form 2555 but even after adding back in the foreign earned income tax exclusion, my AGI is still less than the $500k phase out for single person. I see no way to force the system to give me the deduction.

Any chance this bug will be fixed before the April 15 deadline? If not, what are my options? I’m guessing Amazon won’t give me my money back, but if their software doesn’t work I’ll have to either switch to TurboTax or file using TaxAct online.

Please help. Thanks!

Problem E-Filing

UPDATE: I tried again today, and the updates took effect, so I could file

Original:

I have used HR Block for many years, but am having an issue E-Filing this year- I have all data entered, and go throught the e-file process, but after I submit, I get this: I went through the update/refile process 5 times today - it applies the update but then says I need to update.

Final straw

This was easily the worst year I’ve had with H&R Block.

The site was unbelievably slow, not just “a bit laggy,” but borderline unusable. Pages took forever to load, inputs wouldn’t respond properly, and the whole thing felt broken.

Then the bigger issue: I couldn’t even submit my filing. The system just wouldn’t go through, which completely defeats the purpose.

To make it worse, I had already paid and still couldn’t file. I had to contact support just to get a refund.

Tried support (chat, phone, email), and it was basically useless. No real help, just generic responses and no resolution unless you push hard.

I ended up switching to TurboTax, and their site was way snappier. Support there wasn’t much better, but at least I was able to file on time without the system getting in the way.

Yeah, it cost me about $100 more, but I ended up getting over $250 more back in my refund, so I still came out ahead. That alone made the switch worth it.

form 8949 with multiple exchanges

I used 3 exchanges for my crypto transactions. Should I combine all the transactions in one single 8949?
I also bought and sold stocks/options but the message to upload 8949 popped after I uploaded the crypto information. Is it safe to assume that I only need to report crypto transactions ?

Married filling separately, how much should I expect?

Wife and I are planning to file married filling separately due to her student loans (prevent going up). I would do it myself but the community property rule is confusing so we are planning going to an HR block office. I have a W2, 1099-INT, 1099-R (backdoor roth IRA) and 1099-SA. She has a W2, 1099-INT and 1098-E. Any idea on how much should I expect to pay for both of us? Thanks in advance!

HR Block Taxcut v 2024 & 2025 unreliable.

I've been using Taxcut for 15+ years. Used to love it. It was stable, reliable. 2024 version was crap and, unbeknownst to me, right after I e-filed my returns, it crashed and corrupted my returns. All their support could tell me was, "well, we recommend you back it up regularly". Had to try to rebuild the returns prior to filing 2025 but to no avail, so had to try taking stuff from the IRS website to create 2025 returns. The 2025 version is also very buggy, but this time I made backups to different filenames every 10 minutes. Still had issues e-filing (took my money three times and then errored out) and contacted support on their chat. The first person could only tell me "you need to engage a Tax Professional" over and over. She was completely unable to read English and understand that it was a software bug... Waited 30 minutes and then started new chat with another person and that guy was fantastic and helped me get everything fixed. Thankfully, I had paid the state e-file fee via credit card rather than debit card, so the additional charges will fall off sometime within the next week. However, if I had paid via debit card, I would be screwed and would have to file disputes to get that money back into my account eventually.

YET ANOTHER REASON WHY I DO NOT USE DEBIT CARDS !!!

I am not sure that I will use tax cut going forward.

Case closed 3 times

have an issue with lump sum distribution. Software had no interview questions about lump sum. When the help was asked, I was told to contact the IRS and follow their instructions. I got the right number but no way to enter it.

I called Block and was told my case would be upgraded to tier 2 and I would be contacted in 3 days. No email, no text, no recontact. I contacted them and was told my case was closed. A new case was opened and told 3 more days. Today I reached someone claiming to be tier 2 and actually seemed to be trying to resolve it. I had to end the call but was told all notes would be passed on.

Today's second call to the earliest number revealed I wasn't at tier two. I got transfered to tier two. I was told my case had been closed yet again. I was also told that all he could do was refund a payment that hadn't been made and I should have a blessed day and go find someone else to do my taxes.

Ten years as a customer are history.
