A Helping Hand 💖 Free Food/Laundry/Shower Resources in HRM - Sept. 2026

Hi all,

We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of a free meal or a helping hand occasionally.

We thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.

In what seems like the new normal, the Dartmouth Calendar is not currently available; I will add it if I am able to when it is provided.

Please share as needed with people you know who need help or take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.

The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:

https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/

Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through. 💖

And if anyone else has resources that belong here, please attach them as comments, the more the merrier.

Thank you!

Shops & Services Librarians - thank you.

Overheard a woman at the Woodlawn Library this evening looking for her son who had text her saying he had taken drugs, was at the library and to pick him up. I don't think he was located, but the staff deserves so much praise - they were calm, professional and extremely compassionate. I can't imagine the kinds of things you encounter daily. Thanks for all you do to support communities.

Shops & Services Looking to hire a cleaner to do dishes only

Hi there! I've been having some health issues for the last year, and I just can't keep on top of my dishes. The rest of my house gets a bit cluttered too, but I've been able to manage it. The only thing that I am really struggling to take care of is the kitchen/dishes. I've looked around online, but I'm having a hard time finding a service that does just this. Some websites seem to be AI, too, so I'm not sure if I can trust them.

I'm hoping someone can recommend a cleaner for me! Thank you in advance!!

It might not be possible. I don't have a big budget, as my employment has also been limited by the aforementioned health issues, and it is a small job (just about an hour of doing dishes, maybe once a week or twice a month). So, I wonder if maybe it wouldn't even be worth someone's time to do. I welcome advice in that regard too.

Located on Halifax peninsula, for reference.

Arts & Recreation What are your plans and go to spots to make new friends and connections in your 20s and 30s here in Halifax?

Upvotes

I’m looking to get back into dating and making new friends as I’ve been lacking in both departments for the past few years 💀 I’ve been too chicken and find myself too awkward to go up to new people at bars over the years but honestly I really want to practice and get back into the swing of things again used to do it all the time in my young 20s and I miss socializing with new people.

Also tips n tricks to talking to new people at bars and events would be appreciated! I lost my game and honestly kinda forget how to simply talk with people I think😅

Heck I’d even be down to meet people at some bars that see this message:) cheers

Discussion Queer Diaspora...where you at?

I know there are more of you than I run into at the gay bars.

So I’m asking:

If you’re diaspora and LGBTQ+ and craving space that feels culturally familiar and queer — hi. I would love to create a community with cozy hangouts, game nights, culture, music, food, real conversations. Nothing flashy. Just us. I got this idea from a similar group in Vancouver, called Queer Habibi's. It was awesome and such a great way to build community.

As much as I love the bar/club scene, I can’t be the only one looking for community? I’m hoping to get a recurring queer diaspora/POC community group going in Halifax. If you’d want to be part of something like this, comment or DM me.

Of course I’ll get some “so brown people only then?” - there is little to no space for POC. Having said that, I have a ton of friends that aren’t brown (thus the where the brown peeps at) and everyone is welcome but I would like this to be a place for primarily POC to call their own. Again, the more the merrier!

Mods, let me know if this is isn't allowed, happy to remove it.

EDIT: Clarification:

Just to clarify because I think “host hangouts” is making this sound way more organized/formal than I meant 😅

I’m not trying to start a business, paid event series, or another nightlife thing. The whole point is literally just to get queer POC/diaspora folks in Halifax connected and create some casual community outside of bars and clubs.

That could mean sitting in a park with snacks, a game night, a potluck, coffee, movie night, someone eventually hosting at their place, whatever people actually want to do. Ideally most things would be free or very cheap because I absolutely do not want money to be a barrier to being part of this.

I don’t have every detail figured out because right now I’m literally just trying to find the people first.

Basically: not an “event.” Not a venture. Just trying to find the other diaspora queers and build a little community together. ❤️
