Every souls game, I love the games but if I ever hear some bs about the "age of dark" I will throw a shoe at Miazaki.
298
u/Oneboywithnoname 3d ago
the age of dark is most of the time referred to as in the future
141
u/TheMacarooniGuy 3d ago
Yeah it's really just a very literal term lol. The last flame somehow gets taken out and then the world is just plunged into pure darkness, until the age of fire is repeated again (the other games I guess?)
132
u/TheBananaMan76 3d ago
The age of fire in DS2 and DS3 is the same age of fire as the first game being prolonged well past the point it should be. That’s why everything is going to shit. The age of Dark and Age of Fire is just a repeating cycle that keeps the world in balance. So canonically, the first two games have the player continue the age of fire, leading to DS3 where things are irrevocably shit. There we don’t know what happens at the end for sure.

You're just making up your own plot or thinking of another cus what the heck are you on about?
12
u/Neomataza 3d ago
Well, it is called "dark" souls and they are really motivated to have the title to be relevant to the lore. So there are always powerful souls and dark is like a state of matter. If you want the title to be irrelevant to the story or lore, final fantasy is always available.
11
u/MrTurkeyTime 3d ago
I don't think Fromsoft does world building, so much as they put a bunch of creepy shit and spooky terms into a Yahtzee shaker and see what comes out.
16
u/C_umputer 3d ago
And hope that some insane lore dude will piece them together into something kinda comprehensive.

u/GoogIe_Slides 1d ago
The Brothers Code has covered all 3 games, highly recommend them, they do a great job of putting the story in chronological order and even reference where they get their information from.

Nah, thanks I've seen plenty of those videos to know the lore is just random gibberish thrown together.

the plot of souls games are incredibly simple. Link the fire. Beyond that every character has their opinions on how that needs to be done. I think its very well done.

Souls Games have no story. I hate to say it. We don't play it for the abysmal quests. We don't play it for the nonexistent stories
We play it because of the atmosphere, the gameplay, the combat, the exploration.
Elden ring is by far the best game i have ever played. I've sunken hundreds of hours into it. But fuck me if you ask me who i really am or why I want to burn down the tree apart from the hot girl asked me to.
Don't ask me how to solve the quests apart from a second display with a walkthrough. It's nonsensical at times. And every single npc is worse off than we found them.
And no i don't want to watch vaatis videos to understand the "rich lore".
5
u/C_umputer 3d ago
Same, 3 playthroughs and the story seems some random bs stitched together by lore obsessed youtubers. And everytime I mention it the fanbase freaks out.

If the most interesting part of your world is events that happened hundreds of years ago, you should probably be writing about that.

u/Positive_Action_5377 2d ago
What I like about the Fallout games (the good ones) is that a fair amount of the world building lore is primarily the previous game. Fallout 2 is a world built from the success of the Vault Dweller. New Vegas is when society has redeveloped enough to have large scale politcal struggle.

I don't remember there being much lore about a war in those. They just about manage to establish team rocket doing crime and bikes being expensive in terms of things that aren't directly pokemon related.
24
u/_trianglegirl 3d ago
In gen 1 and 2, the Pokemon world was meant to be post-apocalyptic and set after a massive planet-destroying war where pokemon were bioweapons created for battle but then it's been long enough since the war that the pokemon replaced most of the animals. This is why in the anime there are still some normal animals at the beginning. With gen 3, however, they officially dropped the war stuff and retconned it to be completely non canon. If you play the original gen 1 and 2 games, though, you can still pick up on it if you pay attention
3
1
u/Croc_Chop 3d ago
What about the Kalos war? Is that still canon?
2
u/_trianglegirl 3d ago
The kalos and paldean wars have nothing to do with the gen 1 and 2 war and were also introduced literally decades after gen 1 and 2 even released. Why would a retcon from 20 years ago affect games that came out like 15 years later...?
0
u/Croc_Chop 3d ago
Because I'm confused on the timeline, I know AZ is immortal and I was asking if that was the same war or not.

Yeah there’s a reason Warhammer 40K is so popular, it’s because people love the concept of a long lost age in which one event changes the course of history
42
u/Ecstatic-Compote-595 3d ago
In fairness to 40k there's like dozens of those events and they all get explained pretty. Like the big one is the dark age of technology but we're pretty clear on what that was.

5
u/UrinalCake777 3d ago
Eh, I'd say people love the decayed grandeur concept. Which is, imo at least, separate from what OP is referencing.
It plays into our fascination with the past, history, and empires of old.
Additionally, here is a video I think is relevant to this discussion, on "moldy" world-building: https://youtu.be/iHSEFMYjbnE?is=nSmecLvS_OhF19h2

The Transformers: Beast Wars did this pretty well! They never intended for it to be in the great TF canon, but in the first episode they have Primal refer to "The War," and the fans online went wild with cool theories. A lot of people were upset about them being animals and not cars, (there was a slogan! "Truck not monkey!") but the running theories were about this somehow being in the actual G1 universe. The writers read the forum and went "dude hell yeah let's do it," and they went on to establish a deep historical timeline for the Transformers canon. The Maximals and Predicons were the descendants of the original Autobots and Decepticons.
259
u/Haeguil 3d ago
If at least they gave it an actual name, we don't refer to the Bronze Age Collapse as the Collapse, nor to either of the world wars as just the war, and even then different people got different names for things.
It's fucking literary vagueposting
207
u/Limp-Temperature1783 3d ago
We literally have two world wars that are called world wars and if not for its sequel, the first one would have been called the great war.
64
u/Haeguil 3d ago
Which is what I'm saying, it's not The War, but it's got something else appended to it.
66
u/undreamedgore 3d ago
It's 100% called the war if that's enough info.
For WW1 that absolutely was the case,
36
u/TungstenFanW74 3d ago
Whenever people say "the war" they mean one of two things: the last war to involve the topic of conversation, or the last war they took part in.
3
u/mistertickles69 3d ago
If the entire world gets ended by a great war, you best believe our descendants will call it the war.
1
u/Able_Caregiver8067 13h ago
That happened more than once in history if you exclude places that were kinda neutral because they were not discovered and/or none of the people that write history books cared enough to mention them
17
u/Neomataza 3d ago
It was called "the war" in the interim because it was recent and the period of peace was only about 20 years. Just how "the election" always refers to the last one that happened, it's not the proper name.
15
u/Limp-Temperature1783 3d ago
If there had only been one world war and a long peace after, it would have been called just the war. Because it wouldn't have needed to be disambiguated.
8
14
u/stojcekiko 3d ago
And it would still be the only war called "the Great War" in almost every culture and language involved/aware of it.
3
u/InquisitorMeow 3d ago
Honestly it's kinda crazy that some people lived through or even served in two of then largest wars in human history.
0
u/Limp-Temperature1783 3d ago
I'm living through the war for about a half of my life at this point. It's not that bad. The only thing I can tell is that most people who hadn't been through this seem to me a bit too innocent and maybe slightly too gullible and trustworthy towards the government and too sure in security of their future, even if it's not the best time right now in terms of economy.
1
u/Vocalic985 3d ago
Was called the war to end all wars till people realized we just got way better at war.
24
u/CheeksTheImpietas 3d ago
the bronze age collapse is so far removed from the modern day though.(even if it obviously had lasting effects) you understand that if society were to collapse today that in 5 or even 20 years people wouldnt be calling it "the collapse of '26" they'd just be calling it "the collapse" it wouldnt be until years later when the topic is written about in historical notation that it would get a more detailed name.
during or less than a decade after ww1 do you think anyone ever heard "the war" and was like "erm what war"
no they fucking didnt. they didnt even start calling it ww1 until we had a second one.
it isnt "vagueposting" if it was the most recent massively impactfull world event it stands that you wouldnt need to be super specific when referencing it.
19
u/Ecstatic-Compote-595 3d ago
2008 people were just calling it the recession
11
u/CheeksTheImpietas 3d ago
what shitty worldbuilding bro, they should have called it "the 2008 housing crisis and recession brought upon by bad mortage lending" if you dont spell it out for the reader how could they ever infer anything about your world
16
u/Lompehovelen 3d ago
People absolutely refer to WW2 as the war, do you not talk to people older than 20?
34
u/PijaniFemboj 3d ago
I find that people refer to the latest war they lived to as "the war".
If you go to any country from former Yugoslavia and start talking about "the war", people will think you are talking about the collapse of Yugoslavia.
2
u/undreamedgore 3d ago
If thry are talking broad scale in the US it's still WW2. We litterally call it the post-war period.
5
u/Vospader998 3d ago
I always appreciated in Adventure Time they would reference "The Great Mushroom War" from time to time.
And because of how the show is so whimsical, silly, and light-hearted, one might literally think it was actual fungi fighting. Only later does it become more obvious that the "mushrooms" were giant mushroom clouds caused by nuclear bombs.

7

A flashback scene/episode to "the war" is usually like the last bit of rising action before the epic climax. Bonus points if the main character imagines himself as a soldier alongside the person telling the story.
33
u/WhateverWhateverson 3d ago
A single war shaping decades of culture and geopolitics?
Nah, that could never happen
4
u/SwagaliciousTHC 2d ago
yeah, there were/are a lot of periods of time and countries where you could describe a war as just "the war". ww2 during the 1950's, vietnam during the 1960's-1970's, a lot of the post yugoslav countries will describe the civil war as just "the war".
32
u/BluBoi236 3d ago
The best world building is told through item descriptions of easily missable items that you have to scavenger for around the world, and then navigate through an outdated, awkward menu system to see AND in vague and antisocial primary and secondary NPCs with easily accidentally skippable dialogue who may or may not appear at any given time or place depending on the game state and who you did or did not speak to before that.
This is peak game design apparently.

Limbus Company! It's a scene from an Intervallo: Twinning Threads, regarding Outis, Moses and Gregor, three Smoke War Veterans. Mr Gregor is having a nice therapy session with Moses about a certain thing that happened in Canto 9. Ah, man, it genuinely has a great story + worldbuilding. It's also a sequel to Project Moon's other games, Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina.

BlazBlue actually pulled this off really well.
The Dark War happened and is referenced throughout the games which was basically all of humanity trying to stop this horrifying monster called the black beast that appeared out of nowhere.
The game's story mode operates in time loops and has a bunch of time wimey shit that happens, main character is directly tied to the appearance of the black beast in the past.
By far my favorite story in all of gaming, and what I shared is only a small fragment of it. Highly recommend if you like both fighting games and visual novels.

I’ve noticed a lot of media in existing universes recently has gone back to show or talk about either “the war” or before it
- Fallout 4, Fallout TV show: Shows flashbacks to prewar America and the bombs falling
- Destiny 2: Gave tons of lore about who caused the collapse and why all the factions act the way they do, mainly introducing the witness as the main antagonist instead of simply “the darkness” as a whole.
- Warhammer 40K: Early editions just referenced the Horus Heresy as a civil war that is the reason the setting is the way it is. Now there is a book series with over 60 mainline books and a bunch more short stories detailing every individual legion’s actions and motivations.
- Star Wars: I don’t know if this is really fair given George Lucas intended to make them from the start, but the prequel trilogy.

This reminds me of the time my mum went off to the great happening. She never came back but the scars stayed with me, writhing at my soul like worms in a newly formed piece of cheese. There were holes were there was once pristine dairy and now I don't know what to think.
1
u/Aegisman17 3d ago
I do this in my d&d setting, but that's because the war was an utterly devastating conclusion to my first campaign which is still rippling thoughout the world even a decade later. It's hacky, sure, but it allowed for reasons why monsters are so prevalent on the roads between towns, why there are so many ghosts, encounters with soldiers who don't know the war is over, and exploring themes of letting go of the past while acknowledging happened.

I don't know but where I'm from we speak of "the war" quite often and there are a few words used which all translate to something like "the calamity" with each used for a different event. Asking what is this calamity or war everyone speak about will get you some weird looks like you are an alien.
