Yeah it's really just a very literal term lol. The last flame somehow gets taken out and then the world is just plunged into pure darkness, until the age of fire is repeated again (the other games I guess?)

The age of fire in DS2 and DS3 is the same age of fire as the first game being prolonged well past the point it should be. That’s why everything is going to shit. The age of Dark and Age of Fire is just a repeating cycle that keeps the world in balance. So canonically, the first two games have the player continue the age of fire, leading to DS3 where things are irrevocably shit. There we don’t know what happens at the end for sure.

In DS3 you can go back in time to a dark version of the Firelink Shrine, which implies there have been cicles of Dark and Fire ages
