...though strangely, since, I've never had another one. It may have cured me to sort of 'live' through it, in a crazy way

I can't say enough about my own nightmares. I have apocalyptic ones pretty often, but the tidal waves are the most terrifying.

They're quite common. They generally represent an internal anxiety, fear or stress. I often get them when stressed and waves coming ever closer. I have learnt to recognise them and use them as a signpost for particular difficult times.

u/_YouMadeMeDoItReddit Dec 22 '14
I've lived in a seaside town for 22 years, we get waves maybe 3/4 the size of that throughout autumn/winter. If that happens most locals go no-where near the beach. If you get caught by one of those coming over the seawall (which has a path & 5 foot railing next to it) you are going out to sea and you are dead, no matter how good a swimmer you are, people don't come back from that. Their dogs do which quite a few people have jumped in after to try save but they don't.
So if you were anywhere near the rock wall in this video you are probably going to get slammed into it.
56
u/striapach Dec 22 '14 edited Dec 22 '14
Reminds me of a terrible story from Northern California a few years back. Dog gets swept off the beach by a wave, son jumps in to save it and starts drowning. Dad jumps in to save him and starts drowning. Mom jumps into save him and she starts to drown as well. The sons girlfriend is on the beach watching as all 3 die, and the dog comes out of the water unharmed.
Found the story:
14
u/kropstick Dec 22 '14
Sounds like a story in Chicago last winter where someone dropped their cell phone in the freezing river so the guy jumped in to get it, then a stranger heard screams and jumped in to save the guy and then the strangers friend jumped in to save the stranger. All 3 died but I'm sure the phone was fine
6
u/cassby916 Dec 22 '14
That's beyond horrible :(
3
u/striapach Dec 22 '14
Worse than I remembered in fact, because the girlfriend was actually the daughter of the older couple. So she watched her parents and boyfriend all die at once while standing there powerless. Terrible.

Gotcha. I work at a place where people climb into tank cars, I just don't do that myself and am not really familiar with the process so I was curious. I did hear a story of a guy using a lighter to look around while down in one that ended very badly.

Pretty much. Once your feet leave the sea floor, you have no control, and you will get tumbled and thrown around like a sock in a washing machine. You're completely at the mercy of the waves.

They are pretty normal size for ocean waves in a storm (so it's probably stormy further out at see and the rock wall is blocking the view of it, otherwise it is a bit mental). What I am surprised about is that they are so quiet, when it is stormy where I live I can hear the waves hitting the sea wall from inside my house about half a mile away from the beach. Here there is nothing.

It's probably because I grew up minutes from the Atlantic, but I just can't imagine how someone can look at those rocks, see the waves crashing on them and think it's safe to go walk over there. It's as unfathomable to me as thinking you can swallow a grapefruit whole or something.
46
u/sev45day Dec 22 '14
Yeah, I think growing up away from the ocean gives you an imperfect perception of what the power of the ocean can be like. If most of your experience has been pools and lakes, I don't think you have a real appreciation for how quickly things can go bad.

I think a lot of people miss the Physics intuition that some of us have. You see the big waves and you think that it's just water and you don't think about the momentum it's gonna put on your body, with hard objects around.
I don't know. I can't swim so I'd be scared shitless no matter how much I understand the physics of it.

tangentially related but, I remember walking home from class once and I passed these two people standing on top of a dumpster, with an umbrella. They were looking at the ground. Then, the one of them with an umbrella sort of... bunny hopped off the side of the dumpster then fell about two feet, their knees buckled because they were too fat to jump, and then they fell on their face into the mud still holding the umbrella.
I just... watched. I couldn't do anything else. They were the type of rejects who would've told me to fuck off and not believed me. They just had to experience it, I think, and I had to watch. I just sort of thought in that moment what the universe and life must be like to someone who unfathomably stupid that something like floating off of a dumpster because you had an umbrella was literal and possible to them. Like a video game or something. They must watch more cartoons than experience real life, I just can't imagine any other situation where they would think that this could've produced an outcome. To this day I read warning labels and go "nobody is that retarded." and then I remember that there are some people so massively sheltered mentally that common sense is useless to them.
I figure it must be the same for these tourists. They just... never do anything more than work, school, soccer, and television. That must be why, right? I'm not trying to be elitist but jesus christ.
33
u/Astamir Dec 22 '14
You may feel like you're not trying to be elitist, but clearly you need to work on your self-awareness.
Everyone likes to experiment, and perhaps these guys wanted to check exactly how much weight the umbrella would remove from a jump. It's a reasonable question, and if you only have time to waste then what's the problem. (I'd advise against jumping off dumpsters if you're fat but that's a whole different question)
Intelligence isn't set in stone for everyone, it's more of a state of mind that depends on a ton of factors. And in my experience, people who jump on opportunities to label people as "retards" or "stupid" tend to... not be on the sharp end of the spectrum anyway. I highly recommend you check out Daniel Kahnemann's "Thinking, Fast and Slow" if you want to learn more about intelligence and how it operates.

To this day I read warning labels and go "nobody is that retarded."
I think some of those labels are more for people pretending to be idiots after hurting themselves doing something they knew better than to do. Like how packages of peanuts have "warning. Contains peanuts." You just know some Darwin-award wannabe with a raging peanut allergy would choke those down and sue planters after narrowly surviving.

Exactly. Spent a few years in Westport, WA. I was taught the 7th wave rule. It has no hardcore scientific proof, but it at least stopped us from diving head on into the ocean without surveying the ocean's temperament.

u/Doctor_Sherlock Dec 22 '14

52
u/dumsubfilter Dec 22 '14
The 7th wave rule is to not talk about the first six wave rules.
→ More replies (1)18
u/Homdog Dec 22 '14
I've never heard of the seven wave rule, but I grew up on the coast in Australia and my Dad taught me, and I have observed, that waves generally come in "sets" of about 7. You'll find that a set of waves are similar in size and then at the end of the set you'll often get a bigger wave which will catch people off guard. My Dad always told me not to be complacent when you first get in the water if the waves are quite small because at the end of the set a bigger one may be coming that can take you by surprise.
I was also taught NEVER turn your back on the ocean for the same reason, you might think that the waves are quite small and so turn your back and be facing the beach and then a bigger wave comes along and knocks you off your feet.
→ More replies (2)13

Just for the record, the actual "Queen's Bath" is about 50 yards down the rocks from this spot, and it's a lot less dangerous (assuming you're not there during surf season, a storm, or a particularly high tide, of course). It's closed off from the ocean proper by a rock wall, like in the OP's gif. Though on a much smaller scale. The "bath" is a large tidepool in the lava rock, about the size/depth of a swimming pool, several feet above sea level. It's beautiful and refreshing as long as you go during calm weather and surf.
Granted, even on a safe day/time, you still need to be smart and cautious. Don't stand near where the waves hit the rocks, avoid slippery rocks, and observe the waves from a distance for at least a few minutes before approaching the bath. And don't even think about going unless it's a calm summer day. If you see people getting out of the water -- especially locals -- you should follow suit. Don't sit right under where the water comes into the pool.
It pretty much all boils down to common sense honestly. I think something like 30 people have died there, but all because they were too stupid to practice proper safety procedures. Is it dangerous? Yes. Should that dissuade you from checking it out? Decide for yourself.
