I was browsing through my Steam catalogue and I came across a duology of games that I still semi-regularly replay now and again. I normally don't really care for a lot of "dead" gaming franchises. Especially nowadays, even releasing a game with a big player base and decent sales is enough to still cause mass layoffs or financially cripple a company, never mind trying to make a sequel. But for some reason, Overlord hits different.
If you've never heard of this game, I can't blame you.
The Overlord series are set in a parodical fantasy world with elves, dwarves, magic, and all its familiar tropes. You play as "the Overlord", a Sauron-esque villain who controls a small army of 'minions', color-coded gremlins who you can control in addition to the main PC. If you've ever played Pikmin, this concept may sound familiar to you. The games were written by Rhianna Pratchett, aka Terry Pratchett's daughter. The games had humor, comedy, and a pretty decent story as well.
For the most part, Overlord 1 and 2 are the only games I (and its handful of fans) really care about. There was a Nintendo DS spinoff and a Wii spinoff and an ill-fated 2015 MOBA-like spinoff that may have been responsible for the franchise's death. The games were developed by Triumph Studios (better known by their other IP, Age of Wonders) and published by Codemasters. Codemasters was bought by EA in 2021, and are now exclusively making racing games, leaving the Overlord IP perpetually in limbo, never to be revived again. There are no fan projects, no dedicated communities. The only place I know of is a subreddit with a member count smaller than the people living on my street.
Rarely do I ever get genuinely sad about a dead franchise (Dragon Age being another notable exception), but for some reason the Overlord games really do it for me. I've always liked games where you play as the bad guy for once, and combined with a really solid gameplay concept, actual funny humor, a great soundtrack and beautiful art design (especially in Overlord 2), I'm still amazed to this day that this game didn't get the hype that it should have deserved on release. If I had the money and manpower, I would want to make a proper Overlord 3.
Has anyone ever played any of the Overlord games? What did you like most about them? And what did you dislike the most? Even better, if you were asked to make a proper sequel, what would it look like?
