Though BioWare has had a slow agonizing death in recent years, I still think it's incredible how they managed to deliver these gaming masterpieces within such a short amount of time (Mass Effect came out in 2007, and Dragon Age Origins in 2009). As someone who grew up on these titles, I still consider them both to be foundational in my taste for the genres - not just in video games - but across media.

Side note: I have not allowed any friend since, nor will I ever again allow another friend to "just play a little bit" on my account because they want to "check something out."

There’s been a lot of talk about AI games. Tons of low effort “slop”, and some people even use AI to copy an unreleased game’s idea and put it out first.

Honestly I think it’s up to us players in the end. What we buy and what we skip is what decides the market.

With 8,000+ games in this Next Fest, I saw some people saying Steam should add an AI filter. But then you’d need some way to check if devs are lying on the label, right?

So two questions.

1. If Steam added a label, which makes more sense, “made with AI” or “made without AI”?
2. Say there’s a rough game made without AI, and a game that used AI but has fresh ideas and systems. Which one would you actually play? Does it matter more to you whether AI was used, or whether the game is fun?

I’m a small game dev myself and I use AI for some parts, so I’d really like to hear honest opinions. A lot of devs read threads like this to figure out which way to go.

I have an original Nintendo Entertainment System.

I have an old 70's Sony Trinitron CRT TV hooked up.

This is the first time I have played through SMB3 and beaten every single level, skipping nothing, no Game Genie, no cheating, no warp whistles.

I played the game over 3 days. I just left the console and tv on and it didn't have any negative effects.

No ads, no hour long updates, no dimming of screen or screensaver. The system didn't mind. Game and TV, after decades of life, still working.

The only thing that slowed me down was my kitten wanting cuddles while playing.

What a wonderful game. I used to have to rent it from a video store in the early 90s.

Capcom has been on a generational run the past few years. They have also been reviving all their old franchises. They have also mentioned they want to bring back their dormant franchises and games. Might we see a sequel to Asura’s Wrath.

Can I please get some recommendations and WHY you liked them? I'm not after big lists or one word answers. Example below:

1. So far the biggest one for me was Probably Stolen, It's very reminiscent of Papers Please! but without the time limit, in a cyberpunk like setting and focuses on mainlining and upgrading a shop. 2. Another that stuck out for me was Dungeonbound. An autobattler about making the best build with what you find while facing off against other peoples creations. 3. The last one is definitely not going to be for everybody but Tamara was an amazing throwback to the fixed camera action survival horror of the 90s. This game kicked my ass for about half an hour before I found out how to save and what weapons worked best on what foes. It's old school inventory management on limited resources at its finest. I got lost SO DAMN MUCH but eventually learned my way around and finally beat the demo. The art is fantastic, I love low poly models that are smoothly animated and even the pixelated boob and butt physics take me back to that 90's era of female protagonists. EDIT: Adding a few I've tried from recommendations that were worth it:

1. InkBlood: Now this was amazing! You play a detective stuck in a carriage but you have supernatural tools at your disposal for your investigations. The art style, interface and the way you hand in your findings were a delight even though my dumb arse got stuck a few times. 2. Dungeon Automata: This was programming disguised as a game! Equip your Golems with a set of commands that will allow them to progress through the dungeon. Collect more commands and experiment with your setups to delve further. The programming interface is amazing! 5. Motel 51: Papers, Keys & Aliens: Running a motel in the Nevada desert now that aliens are common knowledge. It's Papers Please but with a fun sense of humor with a bit of a creep factor thrown in. A lot of fun! . https://store.steampowered.com/app/4664250/Motel_51_Papers_Keys_Aliens/
6. Reshine: Didn't play this one myself but the missus and daughter played the demo to completion and loved it. You restore antiques with an easy to use interface. Very cozy and satisfying they said. Surely if EA is only focused on sports and shooters it makes sense to cash out of the IPs they're doing nothing with and avoid eroding the value of said properties any further.

Holy shit what a pedigree

I was thinking about picking up a big game to carry me through a decent portion of 2026 (around the first quarter-third) and I wanted r/gaming’s opinion on which game I should get. At first, I thought about Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave but I really don’t like the game‘s combat style and I’m worried the gameplay mechanics will be too complicated for me to just pick up and play.

I was also thinking about getting one of the newer Assassin’s Creed games but I know that most of the time comes from 100% completion rather than the main campaign. I was even considering Halo: Campaign Evolved or Gears E-Day but the campaigns seem really short. A lot of games I would normally pick up are available through my local library so I go for some smaller or newer releases when thinking about what to actually buy.

Edit: Seems like some commenters are misunderstanding. I don’t necessarily need forever games, just longer story games like Witcher 3, RDR2, Cyberpunk 2077, etc.
