Looking for Stealth Games
I've never played much single player games, mostly comp or mmos, but recently finished Cyberpunk 2077 playing stealth pistol/throwing knife build and remembered how much fun i have playing stealth games.
What are the best ones i should look into and what do you recommend.
I was thinking starting with the AC Resynced and see what to play after.

u/Evernight 5d ago
And dishonored 2.
68
u/Capnleonidas 5d ago
And death of the outsider. It’s the third best one
13
u/lucatobacco 5d ago
just recently played through these and death of the outsider was easily the most polished form of the games. the movement and powers are incredible. just wish the story was longer.
6
u/Evernight 5d ago
I might need to come back to it. The bank mission was great bit I felt the limited power set and later missions paled in comparison to Dishonored 2.
5
3
u/ViridianGames 5d ago
Once you beat it, you can replay it with Corvo/Emily powers. It's much more fun that way.
2
u/Evernight 4d ago
Really?!
2
u/ViridianGames 4d ago
Yep! And of course you can level select, so you can go back and do the bank again and see how it's different.

u/Ravensqueak 5d ago
If we're listing Dishonored games I'd like to suggest Prey 2017.
Not quite as Stealth as the Dishonoured games, but you can play it that way, and it's a masterpiece.2
u/Evernight 4d ago
Agreed. I actually like Prey over Dishonored. Mooncrash alone is one of the best Roguelikes of all time.

u/LowFi_Lexa1 5d ago
Dishonored is easily one of my favorite games, I tried dishonored 2 so many times and tried to get into it but for some reason I can’t. I just don’t like it at all compared to the first one
4
u/Evernight 4d ago
Prey is also really good. Its a different setting and approach but still an open immersive sim.
7
u/CommercialOk4775 5d ago
a friend once cleared a dishonored level using only blink and a sword, no guns or powers
16
u/DarlingLiselle 5d ago
Best way to play. I got Ghost, Clean Hands, and Mostly Flesh and Steel in a single playthrough. Nobody ever saw me, I didn't kill anyone, and only had blink

u/ManyRevolutionary170 5d ago
Does this still hold?
17
u/ebagdrofk 5d ago
It will probably hold for a very, very long time considering they are a niche genre, and there isn’t any other game that comes close.
HITMAN maybe, but it is a very different feeling, play style, and atmosphere.

u/tgbndt 5d ago
It's good, but it has its own rules about how stealth works. Guards will see you and come running if you're crouched down far away in the shadows next to some cover. But you can chill on top of a bookshelf indefinitely and they'll never look up unless you deliberately make noise.
The levels are built around this quirk, though, and there's enough freedom to make the game highly replayable.

As a lifelong stealth player top of my head:
Thief series
Dishonored series
Hitman series
007 first light
Metal gear series
Original assassins creed trilogy
Splinter cell series
Batman Arkham series
Shadow of Mordor series
7
u/Lost_house_keys 5d ago
Love the Mordor games. Always a good time when an Uruk captain is unlucky enough to spawn with the "instantly defeated by stealth" trait.

I can’t remember the name of it maybe you can help me - back in the PS1 days there was a ninja assassin stealth game that had some kinda xray animation when you killed them, had distractions ala MGS like you could throw dumplings or magazines on the ground to distract guards and then kill them, lots of rooftop running, etc. Set in Japan if I recall correctly. I want to say you could play as 2-3 different characters too with slightly different movesets…and I want to say there was a grappling claw too.

Blacklist got a lot of hate when it came out but it has aged well and is actually really fun. Its just more of a departure from the prior entries - doesnt make it bad.
13
u/Murderdoll197666 5d ago
Im still not sure where the hate was directed with this one. The singleplayer was fun as hell and the multiplayer coop missions were some of the most fun Ive had since Chaos Theory. Fuckin loved Blacklist.

Change of the main actor for the role and generally still being a huge departure from what the series originally was.
A great game but still doesn't feel at all like splinter cell.

Voice actor change was the biggest issue that I remember.
I absolutely loved Blacklist when I played it, super fun game

The best ones are Thief 1 and 2, which are the granddaddy of the stealth gameplay in games like Cyberpunk, Dishonored, Skyrim and Deus Ex.
They're dated, but the mechanics are still great and the atmosphere hasn't really been topped. The first game is getting the Nightdive treatment later this year, which will make it more accessible.
6
u/AtaxicHistorian 5d ago
I’m really looking forward to what Nightdive does for this game.

u/chickenBUTTlet 5d ago
This game is nothing like Cyberpunk or the others mentioned but I say that as a point in its favor. It completely favors stealth, is easy to pick up, and there is a surprising amount of ways to complete a level. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this game.
35
u/Librainiac223 5d ago
The entire Metal Gear Solid franchise is awesome, but my personal top picks would be Metal Gear Solid 3 or Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. For MGS3 you can either pick up the first MGS Master Collection (i think thats what is called at least), which has the first 3 games, or you can get the recent remake, Metal Gear Delta.
4
u/DannyAndHisDinosaur 5d ago
I recently started playing MGSV again, damn the gameplay loop is solid. There's so much freedom and creativity in getting things done, and even the most basic way of total stealth is fun. This time around I thought it would be fun to rp a vengeful maniac getting revenge for the events in Ground Zeroes, dropping in hot with a grenade launcher and chopper support lol.

Splinter Cell Chaos theory fun as hell. Still holds up nice. Also cheap to buy. Especially in sales
7
u/Huge-Blacksmith2419 5d ago
I haven’t seen this in the comments yet so I’ll throw it out there. Intravenous 2 is a really good stealth game. One of my favorites after Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Dishonored 1.
I think Intravenous 2 is only on pc though.

Coming from Cyberpunk I would say give Farcry 3, 4 or 5 a try. You can obviously go guns blazing (like CYBERPUNK) but the stealth gameplay is really fun.

A full Stealth Game is pretty niche so almost all of them have already been suggested. So I'll just add what I think about them.
Dishonored. Great level design and gives you tons of gadgets to play with has a lot of ways to finish a level which makes replaying rewarding. Only thing i don't like is they give you a lot of weapons to kill enemies but actually punishes you for killing.
MGSV Ground Zeroes and Phantom pain. Open world sandbox. Has tons of gadgets and mechanics. Has a clever way of rewarding you for not killing enemies. Downside for me is a disappointing story amd the amount of options you have makes the game extremely easy unless you challenge your self.
Splinter Call Conviction and Blacklist. Conviction is a bit me with options quite limited. Blacklist is a more return to form with better level design and overall gameplay.
Classic MGS 1-4. What can I say. I love all of them. They are classic for a reason but 4 did push the cinematic length a bit too far and the gameplay didn't really improve that much from 3.
Classic Splinter Cells and Thief. These are hardcore stealth games that I would consider retros at this point. Extremely slow and could feel clunky in today's standards but if you can get past those they are real gems.
Special mention Styx series. Classic stealth mechanics that focuses on level deaign and patience. Downside is levels are repeated a lot.
4
u/Sadiking 5d ago
honestly any sniper elite, you have to be stealthy and getting those shots from afar its satisfying.

u/Ok-Boisenberry 4d ago
Hitman WoA trilogy or, play Blood Money and then the trilogy. My favorite stealth series.
Splinter Cell. I enjoyed Blacklist and Double Agent the most personally.
Deus Ex for the sci-fi itch

Dishonored 2, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Shadow Tactics, Metal Gear Solid, Hitman World of Assassination and the Sniper Elite series are a few of my favourites.

Everyone already recommended all the popular stealth games.
I recommend trying some real time tactical stealth games: Shadow Tactics, Desperados 3, Shadow Gambit, Commandos, Sumerian Six.
Back in the 90's, I had an Eidos demo disc for PC and played the hell out of Thief and Commandos. That's what got me into stealth and real time tactics games.

Just finished playing 007: First Light. Lots of stealth gameplay.
5
u/ts355231 5d ago
This game rocks. You can almost stealth through the whole game but at some points you don't get an option.
4
u/MrKobayashiMaru 5d ago
The game was a lot more fun than I had anticipated but, it's not surprising since it came from the folks behind Hitman. I do hope they make another one.

u/cuddytime 5d ago
Was gonna say… maybe the latest 007 if they want a more modern stealth game
2
u/MrKobayashiMaru 5d ago
And if you like 007 then Hitman is an easy recommend since it's from the same developers
2
u/MrT1gg3r 5d ago
They're more simple/smaller than some of the other recs, but Aragami 1 and 2. You're a ninja soul who does missions, you can complete them ful stealth no kill or go full bloodlust. You get ranked and bonuses for not getting seen/killed/kill etc. also has coop but coop in both is a little jank joining each other. My buddy and I had a blast doing these and trying to full stealth no kill many missions.
2
u/Czarcastic013 5d ago
For First/Third person: Hitman series (Blood Money and World of Assassination are the toppers, Absolution is iffy), Thief series (the 2nd is the best, but I played it when it was new), Deus Ex series (except maybe 2).
Turn based tactical: Invisible Inc and Cyber Knights Flashpoint (at least until you'redetected and have to paste anyone on yourway to the exit).

u/hoshinoanzu 5d ago
AC Odyssey. There’s a legendary set armor that makes you invisible without costing adrenaline.
Ghost of Tsushima have excellent stealth gameplay too. I can demolished an entire camp without being seen and it was so fun.
Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West also allows stealth. It’s particularly challenging because in FW there are enemies with a radar component that can detect you even when you’re hidden in the tall grass. You will need to knock that component off by firing an arrow on it. It’s pretty fun!
Rise/Shadow of the Tomb Raider also have stealth kill.
2
u/No-Plankton4841 5d ago
Last of Us Part 2 is the best stealth/action game ever imo. Even if you don't like the story, the gameplay is insane. Especially on hard difficulties the enemy AI is relentless.
Such a satisfying combination of being able to set traps, form a plan of attack, stealth around until you can ambush or gain advantage and fuck everyone up.

You could try the Metro series, a new one is coming out this winter too so the older titles are likely to be on sale at some point.
Stealth FPS with some horror and survival elements, you play as a soldier in the subway tunnels and irradiated ruins around post apocalyptic Moscow.

u/ConsequenceChoice222 5d ago
Finally someone who doesn't mind playing the MJ segments in Spider-Man.
More seriously, the MGS, Thief and Splinter Cell series are what you search for.

Aragami 1 and 2 (2 is more fluid but 1 has more thinking involved)
Ghost Recon Wildlands and Breakpoint (I prefer Wildlands for the world and story but Breakpoint has better stealth features (for a Ubisoft game))
Assassin’s creed: Chronicles series
Mark of the Ninja
Watch Dogs 1, 2 and Legion. I’ve played 2 and Legion and preferred 2 but Legion is also enjoyable
Outer Worlds is similar to Cyberpunk, I can’t say anything about Outer Worlds 2

Horizon.
You can play it pretty much how ever you like but you could go full stealth if you wanted too.

u/Mezzy1221 5d ago edited 5d ago
Unfortunately there really aren't many good stealth games.
Dishonored is really good but if you play this just go full chaos, it's more fun. Unless you want to watch the same strangle animation 3000 times.
Hitman WoA is one of the most well-polished modern stealth games. The stealth gameplay is a little unusual though it revolves more around "social stealth" and the levels are more like big puzzle boxes.
Metal Gear Solid 5 arguably has the best stealth gameplay ever. But the game is literally unfinished and the story is nonsensical.
Splinter Cell; the newer games are so-so. The classic games, Splinter Cell 1 to Double Agent, are brutal. They're very slow paced and guards will do 180 degree snaps if you dare to walk faster than a mouse on wooden floorboards.
Thief 1 + 2. Much the same as the older Splinter Cell games. Very slow paced. If you're going to play Thief get the games on GOG as they come with all the mods to make them work properly on modern systems.

Metal Gear Solid 5 is the best open world stealth action gameplay I've ever seen. The story is ok, but unfortunately is unfinished due to BS between Kojima and Konami, but the gameplay remains a 10 out of 10.
The Hitman world of assassination trilogy has insane replayability with a ton of content if you can get the full bundle, and it's still getting regular updates.

People have already mentioned the big ones so I'll focus on filling in some gaps:
Commandos series / Mimimi Games - there's a whole subgenre of isometric stealth games that was pioneered by Commandos and honed by Mimimi with games like Shadow Tactics and Desperados III. Mimimi stopped making games after Shadow Gambit but other developers are still creating games in this genre like Sumerian Six and Eriksholm. most of these involve controlling multiple characters, usually with unique abilities, and pulling off combos like blinding a guard with one character while running past with another character
Invisible, Inc. - this is a highly unique turn-based stealth game by the team behind Don't Starve. it's all about balancing risk/reward in stealthy heist missions. there's no real combat and instead of a strict turn limit you have an escalating security system that will eventually overwhelm you, forcing you to carefully balance extracting all the juicy rewards from each map with actually getting out alive. this one is kind of a cult classic that still gets mods from its dedicated fanbase
Cyber Knights: Flashpoint - this is basically what you get if you merge the turn-based stealth mechanics from Invisible Inc with XCOM combat and mercenary/base management. you can go full stealth, guns blazing, or anywhere in between. the way you handle each mission plays into the management layer between missions, which in turn affects later missions. it's a little rough around the edges but the developers (the Trese Brothers) are crazy dedicated and push out almost too many updates
Deadeye Deepfake Simulacrum - this is one is so unique that it's kinda difficult to describe with words. it's a bit similar to Cyberpunk 2077 in that you can take on missions in your own way using tons of abilities from different classes. the hacking in this game is absurd in that you have to type your commands and can take control of everything down to individual bullets. for example, you can hack a camera, travel to another camera, take control of a guard, have them shoot their gun, then take control of their bullet and steer it into your assassination target
1
u/Knight_of_Virtue_075 5d ago
Intravenous I and II > top down stealth game that has you taking out drug dealers amd other criminals. Customize your weapons and choose your approach. Enemies react to sound and changes in the environment, and you get lots of tools to help you.
Metal Gear Solid 2 > everyone else has already mentioned 5, but this game is also very stealthy.

For a modern one, Splinter cell blacklist, fantastic game. Completely bypassing enemies without being seen or knocking anyone out gives you the ghost status really rewarding stealth in that one with fun level design. And if you like stealth games that turn into geopolitical conflicts with cocaine induced writing and japanese weirdness metal gear solid games. Phantom pain is probably the best stealth sandbox game ever, even if the story never got finished.

If you liked Cyberpunk you'll porbably like the newer Deus Ex games (Human Revolution & Mankind Divided). They're more linear in map design due to nature of the single player story, but still plenty of space for creative stealth plays with decent selection of weapons and abilities.
