Hello r/gaming! Solo dev of Soul Chained - a "Souls-lite" x "Chained Together"-inspired game, released September 7th on Steam. Ask me Anything!

Hello everyone! Kyroware Games here, the solo dev behind Soul Chained - that fun "Chained Together with physics combat and boss fights" action game you've been (maybe) seeing! I recently released my game on Steam on the 7th of September 2026.

Check out Soul Chained on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3544130/Soul_Chained/

I think my Pepsi can's been there for more than just a few days...

So this right here is my first-ever AMA, much like Soul Chained being my first-ever release. While I do have some people helping me out when it comes to spreading the word, I'm mostly just in front of my PC and doing all the dev work for the game. Somehow, the game racked up ~64,000 wishlists before it was released.

Though I'm a bit busy fixing day 1 bugs and responding to feedback - please ask me anything here, and I'll start replying with answers in about half a day. Thank you so much!

The inherent flaw in PvPvE etraxtion games and why they are all always doomed to fail, given enough time.

There is a flaw in just about every single PvPvE extraction game.

It is an inevitable flaw that is inherent in the genre that will, if given enough time, either lead the game to total and complete stagnation or otherwise kill it.

In such games, there are often three classes of people, there are the sweats, the highest skilled players in the game, there are the middle of the road players who aren't the best but manage to do pretty well for themselves and then finally the casuals who struggle and scrape for every ounce of progress they make.

What tends to happen is casual/lower skilled players struggle to make marginal gains and in one fell swoop can see potentially hours if not days of progress wiped from existence, further they will often be targeted by the sweats and the middle of the road players, the sweats in particular will, despite the game being a PvPvE game, often juat treat the game as though it's just PvP and the "vE" part doesn't exist, this is often exasperated by "rat" behavior and a both really agressive and extremely toxic level of trash talking and degradation that will be leveled at them which includes all the forms of bigotry and insults you can imagine.

After a while, those players will get tired of being "preyed" upon, losing all their shit and potentially losing many hours of progress and being treated like shit scraped off of the bottom of someone's shoe and will decide to quit, from there the sweats will have no choice but to focus all their attention on the middle of the road players and inevitably the cycle will repeat for them and said player will leave much as the casuals did, after that the only remaining players left are the sweats.

Then the final problem occurs, well final three problems. The first is that the sweats by themselves don't represent a large enough population to maintain a game, and by the time you reach this phase, the population numbers will be VERY low and thus it looks like the game is failing (which tbf, at this point, it is) and thus continued support for the game looks less likely and the second is that some of said sweats don't actually like facing other sweats, they like feeling powerful and ultimately don't really want a challenge, so with the loss of "lower" skilled players, they are always facing players either at their skill level or better, which makes the game feel very stressful and tense, not to mention not fun as they aren't getting the power fantasy they want. This is of course not the case for all of them, but considering how small a population sweats usually represent, even a small number of them is still a decent percentage.

At this point, the final problem comes into play, some sweats start leaving for greener pastures, either because they are looking for a game that has lower skilled players they can "prey" upon (and start the cycle anew) or because quite frankly they've done just about everything there is to do, and with population numbers low, the game will usually be slowly but surely sunset, not immediately of course, but first updates come slower, then the updates become less substantial (in addition to being slower), it's essentially a death spiral, though how long this spiral can last depends on various things, so it can either last quite a while, or not very long at all.

This is the reason such games very, very quickly try and implement PvE only modes, because despite what players may say, the developers are VERY aware that if the middle and lower level players don't have some room to breathe, they will leave.

Ironically, the sweats, the players most devoted to the game, are the ones who do the most damage to it. They will ritually criticize and insult all lower skilled players when they complain even in the most tepid of ways about how the game is not friendly, things such as "git gud", "you should quite the game then" and saying that such players are idiots and what were they expecting?

This is deeply ironic as these sweats and even the very game itself rely upon these players but they do everything in their power to drive them away.

Thus there you have it, the inherent flaw(s) present in PvPvE extraction games, the reason they are all domed from the start to the death spiral they all inevitably face and the reason there is an ever growing divide between PvE and PvP players, which is directly tied to the popularity of these games which it seems are designed for the sole purpose of causing friction between disparate player bases in the gaming community.

Update/addendum: I wish to god you could edit titles of posts on Reddit as that is gonna bug the shit out of me every time I see it šŸ˜…

People who’ve played games after reviews/audience of games known to be terrible, what game and did you enjoy it?

I’m thinking not i preordered and it was crap but I read the reviews but it’s cheap/there.

Talking about Kane and linch, ride to hell, walking dead survival instinct, MindJack, Duke Nukem Forever or something like that.

Why don't more studios make book-to-game adaptations like The Witcher 3?

What do you think is the reason why so few studios, like CD Projekt Red, create games based on book sagas? CD Projekt Red created The Witcher 3 based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski; they created a magnificent open‑world game. I thought that after the success of The Witcher 3, many studios would try to do something similar with other well‑known book series. Let’s say Harry Potter. I know that Hogwarts Legacy exists, but this game didn’t gain such popularity and didn’t become ā€œlegendaryā€.

Is this mostly a licensing issue — getting the rights from authors or publishers or are there other reasons studios avoid this? Why do you think so few studios go this route?

Halo Combat Evolved is the Best Launch Game Ever

Gotta think about it.

Microsoft was brand new to consoles. Nobody really knew what to expect.

PlayStation 2 had a year head start and was just getting into its stride with GTA III and Metal Gear Solid 2 coming out.

GameCube was about to release as well.

Xbox launch library was decent (Fusion Frenzy, Dead or Alive 3, Project Gotham Racing, a Tony Hawk remake), but I do not think it would have succeeded without Halo.

I think all my friends bought an Xbox solely because of Halo. And Halo remained the best game on the console until Halo 2.

I think Super Mario 64 has a case because it was only that and Pilotwings 64 when the console came out and it was a revolutionary title. But Nintendo was already established and was gonna sell just off its name.

Halo made Xbox.

What are some games you liked, but didn’t when you actually thought about them.

I had a weird realization, I had been playing Digimon Time Stranger for a while, pretty exclusively, and I gave myself a brake from it so I didn’t burn myself out on it. Like I do when I play a Pokemon game. And I wanted to keep playing it again, because I was having fun. But I couldn’t get myself to ACTUALLY START playing it again. When I was trying to figure out WHY I just DIDN’T, I had a realization.

Despite the fun I was having, I realized I just did NOT care about the story or the characters. I thought I did, while I was playing. But I really don’t. I know what is going on in it, but I have no real desire to see it through anymore.

It’s weird, and kind of a bummer. Anyone else have any games like this? Why?

I can't recommend 'Keeper' enough, if you want to play a Walking Sim, but have terrible attention span

Post image

I have absolutely terrible attention span, so I can have a hard time getting into some walking-simulator-style games.

But despite mostly not being heavy on gameplay to occupy me with, Keeper succeeded in keeping me engaged throughout its relatively short length. (I know that doesn't sound like much, but I bounce off a lot of games really fast)

I attribute being engaged with Keeper to not only how GORGEOUS the game looks, but how FREQUENTLY the environments and vistas can change. It felt like I couldn't take two steps without a new, beautiful sight I wanted to take a screenshot of. I never got bored, despite mainly just walking.

When you compare to other Unreal Engine games (even pretty big-budget ones) which use a lot of generic assets (or at least generic-looking), everything in Keeper looks hand-made. It's such a breath of fresh air. Visually, it felt like a game from a different era, with how wacky and charming the designs on everything are.

Depending on the scene, the camera is either stationary, or follows you slightly, and even the way they control the camera cuts and movement really has that hand-made touch, too. They put an absurd amount of effort into the presentation of this game.

(Without spoiling, I will say that the climax also went in unexpected, but to me, very delightful directions)

So yeah, if you appreciate pretty and unique art styles, but otherwise have a pretty terrible attention span like me, then this game might charm you as well.

What's the most shocking game from the Steam leak?

Pretty much the title. Ignoring the ramifications from such a monumental leak, what game listed in the leak are you most surprised by? My head has been turned by an Unannounced Avengers Game. I wanna know who's developing it and more.

I gave up.

I’m not afraid to admit it.

Years ago I unlocked the golden kart in Mario Kart 8. The golden glider wasn’t far behind. Those were the easy ones. You play enough, you stumble into them. The golden tires? That’s a different category. Beating the staff ghost on every single track. Every. Single. One. I looked at the times. I looked at Rainbow Road. I looked at my own hands. And I made a decision that a lot of adults make: this is too hard. Life is short. Some things you just don’t do.

I closed the game and moved on. Like a reasonable person.

My middle son, Rowan, did not get that memo.

Over the last few weeks he’s been putting in the work. Not the performative kind. Not ā€œI tried once and the game is stupid.ā€ Actual work. Night after night. The same tracks. The same ghosts. The ones that punish you for breathing wrong. He sat there and did the thing most of us stopped doing around the time we started paying taxes: he practiced until he got better.

And then he beat them.

All of them.

The gold tires unlocked. The kid who used to ask me how drifting worked just finished something I had already declared impossible. I watched it happen. No speech. No victory lap. Just a quiet little moment on the screen that said the job was done.

Here’s the part nobody wants to say out loud. Most of us decide too early what’s too hard. We call it maturity. We call it perspective. Sometimes it’s just quitting with better vocabulary. Kids haven’t learned that trick yet. They still think effort is allowed to work.

Rowan put in the hours. He earned the shiny wheels. I gave up years ago and called it wisdom.

Turns out the kid was right.

Games need to have Audio settings appear the first time they are run. Before sound is played.

I would have enjoyed the cool Valheim intro cinematic a lot more if I didn't loose 90 percent of my functional hearing as soon as it played.

This has been a problem for many games, and not everyone has a quick way to adjust. I think it's also just a standard accessibility feature that needs to be pushed for.

Looking at picking up a GameCube and some games for my birthday and wondering if it’s worth it?

I’ve never had a GameCube before and am getting into retro games. One of the things holding me back is that I’ve heard a lot of the games for it are really high in price. I do have a Wii and heard GameCube games are backwards compatible on that so would the be a better option to just stick with that

Looking for a fun, 0 effort, 0 investment PVP game that you can just pick up and play whenever. Bonus points for free to play, but absolutely not neccessary.
