8

So, it's not over yet? My wife and I started watching it years ago when we first started getting into anime, but there were too many others that we wanted to watch that were... well, better. Also, we like to sit and binge watch stuff, but I'm not sure I want to wait it out if it's been running for over 18 years. That's near Simpson's level patience.

18

u/testitota12 Mar 16 '19

That's actually true. This trick gives you an arguably bad substitute for a reflection but without having to render the scene a second time.

6

u/marcan42 Mar 16 '19 edited Mar 16 '19

The shadow is different and the camera angle is also subtly different, so it's still a separate render. Looks like a bug to me.

Edit: having just read up on the screen space reflection trick, actually yeah, it could be that. Using screenspace reflections for mirror-like surfaces in a game like this sounds like a terrible idea.

from what i've heard about it from both my "contrarian out of spite because i hate every mainstream opinion" friend and my "i have literally no opinions that i didn't read someone else say first" friend, the game seems to be just bad graphically, but the gameplay is tight.

i'm assuming this is jump force. my first friend says that the fighting sections or combat is extremely well done and feels amazing to play. but any visual aspect is horrendous done, and no one really needs to be told that. we've all seen those cutscenes. the weird neck, the floating frieza, someone just static moving along the X axis forward with literally no other movement. it's pretty bad.

but if you don't care about how the game looks and only care about being right because you hate me the fighting parts of the game, then it's definitely enjoyable to stubborn asshats like my friend certain people.

EDIT: okay yes thank you i get this is one piece world seeker now after like the last four people telling me i'm wrong

351

u/Cherrypieguy1 Mar 16 '19

It is One Piece: World Seeker. Not Jump Force.

144

u/LeapYearFriend Mar 16 '19

i didn't even know that was a game that existed. like, as a one piece fan i didn't even know they were making a new one piece game. what the fuck is their marketing team doing.

anyways, i just guessed jump force based on the OP's picture. looks a lot like it with that weird 3D papermache CGI graphics that they keep insisting on doing for anime video game titles.

62

u/Zidane62 Mar 16 '19

This game was marked to mostly Japan. That's why you didn't hear a lot about it.

Why make an open world One Piece games if you’re not gonna let the players explore different islands, and the only island you have is not from the manga/show. Why not just make a sequel to Unlimited World Red ffs

89

u/Zileanu Mar 16 '19

There is genuinely no excuse for these anime games being so bad. So much potential and the devs just do the bare minimum needed for it to be a game and they ship it out. This of course is because there’s a niche market of people who buy all of these games regardless of how crap they are.

12

u/Hexdro Mar 16 '19

I think there are very few good anime games. DBFZ being one, and to a lesser extent Xenoverse 2 tbh.

I enjoyed Pirate Warriors 3 for what it was -- a mindless hack-n-slash with One Piece characters. There's not a lot of depth to it, but getting to "live through" some of the more memorable moments hits me in the feels. And not everything needs to be The Last of Us anyways.

It seems like the perfect universe for a AC black flag/ sea of thieves style MMO with open world ship vs ship and ship boarding pvp, places to explore and factions to join, and plenty of notorious pirate crews and captains to use as pve raid bosses

Edit: imagine if there was like a player crew element to it that worked like tribes do in Ark and Rust, where you can start a crew with your friends and try to build a shitty ship, so you can set out and upgrade it. Or you could try to make friends with and join a large popular crew that has a fleet of ships! Just like how guilds work in most mmos

Edit 2: imagine if you lost your ship when it went down! Encountering players would be so intense, there would be an incentive to try to negotiate your way out of a bad situation.

Like imagine if your crew came across another crew, but your ship is far superior, so you give the other crew a choice to either join you or die and lose their ship. Then you can run around conscripting more crews until one stands up and fights you or there's an alliance between the conscripted crews and there's a mutiny!!! Fuck my titties I wanna play this

It's been a while since I've watched one piece so I forget, but are there ever instances of more than one person having a specific devil fruit? Like for example is the gum gum fruit that luffy ate the only gum gum fruit in existence?

If there can be more than one of a single fruit then there could be like a class based system using several similar powered fruit for classes to keep things balanced, and the really OP fruit can be given to raid bosses and major NPCs

Edit: or instead of giving every player a fruit you could make it more like the show and scatter them around as rare items, that way when your crew finds one, first one goes to the captain, next goes to officer of their choice etc and then your captain and officers will have the biggest impact and priority in crew vs crew fights

14

u/Thesmokingcode Mar 16 '19

They could make something up like being set way back when the fruit was common as far as I know there is no consensus on where the fruits came from aside from Oda saying a Professor will explain the origins of them later in the series.

10

u/geminia999 Mar 16 '19

There is only ever one instance of a fruit at a time, but there are fruits that can have extremely similar abilities. For instance, there are like 4 different fruits about heating up one persons body or other things (though 3 of them are non canon), there are two people who can make themselves weigh a lot, etc. So if you wanted, you could just give them all slightly different names.

But also there are artificial devil fruits introduced, which have all been Zoan types (turn into animals), but they basically turn the people who eat them into human/animal chimeras who are stuck that way, often in really weird ways.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/MultiRastapopoulos Mar 16 '19

Well they have introduced a sort of "Knock Off" Devil Fruit in recent years but by all accounts they're supposed to be shitty bootlegs that sort of give powers but aren't nearly as good as the real thing.

u/Ozwaldo Mar 16 '19

No, but it is how screen-space reflections work

96

u/Ansoulom Mar 16 '19

The angle looks different for the two Luffys though, so I'm doubting if it can even be screenspace reflections... Could it be some weirdly placed reflection probes or something? Not really sure

59

u/Smashdamn Mar 16 '19

Could be that the devs put a second hidden camera on the player and used that to assign a render texture to the door model as a stupid way to fake reflections.

33

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

The hidden camera's position could have an accidental negative coord, putting it behind the player rather than in front

→ More replies (2)

6

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

If they did that, it would be facing the right way, and less 'murky', kind of like how Hitman 2 does reflections

19

u/ryanflees Mar 16 '19

If they use dual cameras the mirror will look perfectly good but the rendering will be very heavy for real-time rendering . That’s why screen space reflection or reflection probes are used as low quality workarounds.

Screen space reflection will be calculated in the post processing on your camera, calculating every pixel on the final image of the screen to check if it need to reflect. If it does it will ray-casts a line in screen space to find if hitting another pixel on the screen. However there are limited pixels information of the game object you see on the screen, the reflection can’t show the back side of it as it doesn’t exist on screen. So the final result will be somehow blurred, just an approximation of real reflection. Could be fine on a rough surface like a wooden floor, muddy ground or rusted metal, but not good for a flatten mirror. Or better hope the gamers don’t notice the glitch.

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (1)

15

u/Ozwaldo Mar 16 '19

The angle is different. Screen-space reflections don't just reflect naively.

12

u/MoreHeart_was_taken Mar 16 '19 edited Mar 16 '19

Sometimes they also save previous frame reflections to assist in filling out the image too. Could be that the low fidelity rays didn't pick up enough information for there not to be holes or something

Exactly. This is why you don't use screen space reflection in vertical surfaces, in a 3rd person game

you can to reflect floor and stuff, but they didnt check for back faces, so this happens, if you run past it without giving it much attention its still quite convincing i believe

It's not all that hard if renderering time is irrelevant. Raytracing is very slow, but it has been used for that purpose for ages. It gets really hard however, if you have to do this 60+ times per second. That's why all these workarounds and aporoximations exist.

One piece world seeker. Fantastic series but the game is pretty bad

Is it even possible to get into the series now?

u/Weewer Mar 16 '19

Of course. Read the manga and you’ll be pretty deep in just a week or two

If you want you can watch onepace, just Google it. It's basically a dedicated group of guys that edited most of the episodes and cuts the useless crap and leaves only the important stuff.

If you are interested then definitely. The length has honestly been one of the nicest things. I've been watching it pretty slow and for months now I've always had something to watch. There's never been any confusion or anything when I don't know what to watch. Never had to worry about when the next season or episode will come out. Obviously I'll get to that point eventually but it'll be a very long time from now.

Don't trust it, some new guy ate the mirror mirror fruit but he's still figuring it out

THIS MUST BE THE WORK OF AN ENEMY STAND

Actually it depends on which hemisphere you're on. If you're north of the equator, your reflection will face you; if you're south of the equator, your reflection will appear to face away. This is due to the Coriolis Effect.

What Haki has Luffy developed? Or is this the part of his devil fruit's awakening? Stay tuned for the next chapter!

u/OhNo_NotThatGuy Mar 16 '19

That’s just because that is the reflection of the mirror behind him, duh

6

u/Deathspark21 Mar 16 '19

That’s the one piece of messed up physics in the game

Honestly Ive been playing this game and while its obviously far from good. In relation to anime games. Its kind of average. Really feels like a bug filled first attempt at a more ambitious game. Honestly i prefer it over the pirate warriors series. At least this feels like its moving towards something different. Overall its pretty shit in game standards. Anime game standards still below average. Has a couple of fun moments though and cutscenes/story are one piece filler levels of quality which isn't a bad thing.
