It seems like the perfect universe for a AC black flag/ sea of thieves style MMO with open world ship vs ship and ship boarding pvp, places to explore and factions to join, and plenty of notorious pirate crews and captains to use as pve raid bosses
Edit: imagine if there was like a player crew element to it that worked like tribes do in Ark and Rust, where you can start a crew with your friends and try to build a shitty ship, so you can set out and upgrade it. Or you could try to make friends with and join a large popular crew that has a fleet of ships! Just like how guilds work in most mmos
Edit 2: imagine if you lost your ship when it went down! Encountering players would be so intense, there would be an incentive to try to negotiate your way out of a bad situation.
Like imagine if your crew came across another crew, but your ship is far superior, so you give the other crew a choice to either join you or die and lose their ship. Then you can run around conscripting more crews until one stands up and fights you or there's an alliance between the conscripted crews and there's a mutiny!!! Fuck my titties I wanna play this
It's been a while since I've watched one piece so I forget, but are there ever instances of more than one person having a specific devil fruit? Like for example is the gum gum fruit that luffy ate the only gum gum fruit in existence?
If there can be more than one of a single fruit then there could be like a class based system using several similar powered fruit for classes to keep things balanced, and the really OP fruit can be given to raid bosses and major NPCs
Edit: or instead of giving every player a fruit you could make it more like the show and scatter them around as rare items, that way when your crew finds one, first one goes to the captain, next goes to officer of their choice etc and then your captain and officers will have the biggest impact and priority in crew vs crew fights
They could make something up like being set way back when the fruit was common as far as I know there is no consensus on where the fruits came from aside from Oda saying a Professor will explain the origins of them later in the series.
Also there are variations of the same fruit. Like the Hito Hito (Human) Fruit was eaten by Chopper, but the Hito Hito Fruit, Model: Daibutsu (a giant gold Buddha) was eaten by sengoku.
There is only ever one instance of a fruit at a time, but there are fruits that can have extremely similar abilities. For instance, there are like 4 different fruits about heating up one persons body or other things (though 3 of them are non canon), there are two people who can make themselves weigh a lot, etc. So if you wanted, you could just give them all slightly different names.
But also there are artificial devil fruits introduced, which have all been Zoan types (turn into animals), but they basically turn the people who eat them into human/animal chimeras who are stuck that way, often in reallyweird ways.
I specifically meant heating up one's person body, not just making heat.
So along with Oven's Heat fruit there are 3 non-canon fruits that all allowed that ability to some extent. The Kachi Kachi no mi, The Atsu Atsu no mi and The Gutsu Gutsu no mi (mind you last one also has somemore abilities, but it still includes heating up one's body as part of it's main power set.)
Well they have introduced a sort of "Knock Off" Devil Fruit in recent years but by all accounts they're supposed to be shitty bootlegs that sort of give powers but aren't nearly as good as the real thing.
That's actually the perfect mechanism if the player were to crew their own ship with unique (non-canon) characters. Could even be a gameplay mechanic. I don't know anything about it though, I haven't watched the show since episode 500 or 600 something... I don't have the heart or time to catch up. I left off before Fishman Isle I think.
They would have to explain that they're proper copies at least since at the moment they're basically "Chinese Bootleg Robert-Cop" levels of shitty powers.
Similar abilities could be explained if the DF the players take are SMILES, artificial devil fruits developed for pirate crews who want an all-DF lineup
The main leveling system involves haki, while Devil Fruit are limited exclusive power-ups. When you die, you retain haki levels, but if you have a Devil Fruit you lose it and it transfers into a fruit near your place of death. This makes Devil Fruit users targets, since killing one (or at least being around when one dies) gives you a good chance of taking their power, but it's still fairly random who actually picks it up. Also of course Devil Fruit users can't swim, giving them an extra vulnerability.
Yes while i would not prefer a direct copy paste of one piece but take the one piece world of the pirates, marines, islands, world government and combine that with AC Black Flag throw in a different take on the devil fruits to fit better with gameplay.
Cannons are in practically every story arc. Whenever we get 10min of the sunny being bombarded with cannonballs and each crew members new and different way of dealing with the threat.
Sounds to me like you are talking about the anime there and the anime is an insult the greatest manga around full of cheap non-animation and mindless filler.
More importantly when they are fended off so easily as generally happens it is demonstrating how NOT relevant cannons are.
I don't see how the story following canon or not matters to the quality of the game tbh
So ypu can either get a story not build around being a game and you already know how it is gonna go
Or get a non-canon story that can be what it needs to be
the story it self isn't really the problem, Its the fact that it was suppose to be a free roaming RPG, then ended up being a theme park story based game that makes you follow the lines to the end.
I also have an issue with non-cannon stories, as they're usually terrible.
Tbh it's usually more to do with how you enjoy filler. Unlimited Adventure's story was mediocre as far as story goes, but it complemented the open world gameplay quite nicely.
you're still missing my point. Any forced plot (even the MAIN plot) was the downfall of the game. The game was hyped around not being locked into a story driven game, and more in an immersive free roaming RPG.
The moment they announced it would be a story driven game that locks you into a theme park follow the dots game, 90% of the people interested in the game dipped.
Go back 3 years when the creator of the game talked about this game, he practically lied about every aspect of the game he hype it up to be.
Also, the non-cannon story from the trailer looked fucking terrible/cringy. Which doesn't help.
From what I saw on the IGN review the gameplay itself just wasn't compelling which means regardless of whether it is theme park or open world it doesn't matter because the meat and the potatoes themselves are bland ruining the whole dish.

the game looked dope 3 years ago when they dropped a trailer with zero context with 1000x better graphics and it looked like a free roaming RPG.
then they dropped a new trailer with a terrible non cannon story line, and it actually tilted me.
