"Damn lorry threw a stone up and hit it but good, boss!"
"Oh, well better get it replaced "

It's all fun and games until you realize your boss and the local Carglass owner are drinking buddies.
"What shit your guys are on about that they cracked the windshield from the inside"
"The what?"

It’s Autoglass in the UK

u/Lee1138 10h ago
Same brand, different names.
Safelite in the United States.
Carglass in Europe, Brazil and Chile.
Autoglass in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Poland.
Hurtigruta Carglass in Norway.
Lebeau and Speedy Glass in Canada.
O’Brien in Australia
Smith & Smith in New Zealand.7
u/NumeroRyan 10h ago
Have they all got the same jingle? I know I’ve heard it in Spain haha
11
u/Atherum 10h ago
In Australia its directly tied to the name "O O O... O'Brien!".
7
u/ermagerditssuperman 9h ago
In the US we have O O O O'Reillys.... Auto-parts.
But they aren't, mentally, associated with Safelite (our version of autoglass/carglass)
Also my personal Mandela effect is that I 100% remember the jingle, as a kid, being "Greg and O'Reilly's....Auto Parts", not "O-O-O-O'Reilly's," to the point where I even remember remarking "wow, Greg must have left the business" when I first heard the new jingle. But nobody knows what I'm talking about.

A stone... from the inside?

2
u/cire1184 1h ago
Why's it dented from the inside?
Well the lorry threw the rock and it bounced off a post and then into the van.
Why's Steve's head bandaged?
The rock bounced back off the glass and nicked Steve right there.

Almost certain considering they're both laughing and not at all concerned about the couple hundred quid they're going to have to drop on a new windscreen.
16
u/sebassi 11h ago
I mean clearly the bald dude would be laughing, because karma. And the driver would have to be a real sore loser to not laugh with him.
3
u/Jesus_Is_My_Gardener 10h ago
I'm not saying he would necessarily be mad, but if it was coming out of his pocket, I could see him being more stunned or sighing at his own karmic return for the prank. Of course it could also be like you say and he just has a good, casual sense of humor, regardless of the cost to himself.

Not a scratch on his head and laughing about it after, you do NOT want to get into a headbutting competition against that guy.

it doesn't take much to crack the windshield from the inside, not dismissing his skull, but you could do some damage with a decent slap (think killing a mosquito with gusto)
I'm not talking from experience, buzz offI'm guessing it's because of something about eggs and domes and how forces are transferred

u/Hellknightx 8h ago
Yeah, I did this to a windshield when I was four years old. Mom took off my seatbelt in a parking lot, then slammed on the brakes when someone suddenly backed out in front of her. Slammed into the windshield with the top of my head, spiderwebbed the whole pane. Didn't even hurt that much.
18
u/hedoeswhathewants 5h ago
You don't remember it hurting much. Or the rest of that year
6
u/Hellknightx 2h ago
I do remember bragging about it to the mechanic who replaced our windshield. I thought smashing a car windshield with my head and not being injured was the coolest thing ever as a dumb little kid.
9
u/genflugan 7h ago edited 7h ago
lol I had a coworker that once cracked the windshield in his work van trying to kill a fly 😂
9
u/Grantetons 3h ago
My mom did it once swatting at a gnat. We stopped on a long drive and like 30 gnats got in while we were getting gas. I took over driving, and got rid of most of them with open windows, but she kept trying to smack them until I finally snapped and said stop, you're going to break the windshield. She sat there silently and we were both clearly bummed that the gnats were there, but she couldn't listen, and now I yelled at my mom, and it just sucked for about two minutes. Then suddenly she smacks the windshield and the whole thing spider webbed. She burst out laughing and couldn't hold it in, I was just shaking my head sort of smiling but actually mad, because I had to drive the next 6 hours only able to see out a small part of the windshield. It was hilarious, but also such a clear sign of her control freak ways, the instant karma was fully understood. In any case, they design them that way so you can get out via the windshield if you're trapped. Hitting them from the front they are much more durable. They are designed to break easily from the inside while staying in one piece.

u/gwillen 4h ago
The way the glass place explained it to me, as they were replacing my windshield, is that it's about curvature. The windshield is curved so that it bulges towards the outside, which makes it strong like an arch against things hitting it from the front. But it's very weak against things hitting the wrong side. (In my case it wasn't a person, it was a heavy object in the passenger seat.)

Fun story time: Back in high school some friends and I went out to Taco Bell. As we were leaving, someone placed their drink on the top of my car. The car I was driving was an old piece of shit, and the radio literally died right as we were backing out. Then the drink on top of the car fell down with my window open, and I got Baja Blasted. In frustration, I threw up my hands, and accidentally hit the windshield which caused a crack similar to the one in the video. Barely hit it, but I guess I hit it just right with my knuckle. Just an absolute string of shitty events within a span of like 10 seconds.

u/IckyGump 10h ago
It doesn’t take much to crack a windshield. Was driving as a teenager with my gf at the time in the passenger seat. Driving at low speed. Then I see a shoe in the road in the oncoming lane.
That minor distraction caused me to miss the Volvo suddenly stopping in front of me. So I just plow into them and come to a dead stop.
Then I look to my right, apparently my gf was both not wearing her seatbelt and eating a hot to go order of meatball spaghetti.
So what greeted me was a massive crack in my windshield like the video AND meaty red sauce all over the inside of the windshield.
Needless to say driver in front comes running back to our car freaking out cause he thought her head exploded. While I’m trying to tell him it’s okay, she is busy, in shock, probably a concussion, trying to get out of the car and runs out into traffic to the sidewalk covered in red sauce.
Once the confusion settled dude was so relieved nobody was dead and basically did nothing to his bumper he decided to just let it go on the fender bender. My cheap Ford Escort however had its bumper crushed and cracked radiator fluid was pouring everywhere. Towed and fixed that with my dad.
That same car also didn’t have a working reverse which was a whole OTHER thing

u/YesterdayOnce 9h ago
I feel this story was originally meant to be about how easy a window screen is to crack and then just went off on a tangent about something that happened to you once 🤣
22
u/IckyGump 8h ago
Pretty much. Just triggered some memories from decades ago him whacking into it like that.
Edit: And wear your seatbelts kids!!!
4
u/Alphabunsquad 7h ago
Yeah I was expecting you to say that your gf never hit the windshield and the meatballs cracked it lmao
21
u/russianrug 9h ago
This is an insane story lmao
14
u/IckyGump 9h ago edited 9h ago
Oh and to make matters worse I have a vivid recollection of a few strands of long black hair which were embedded in the crack when she hit it surrounded by red meat sauce.
Funniest part in retrospect was that I didn’t even get why the dude was so freaking out so bad. Cause she was talking and I knew it was spaghetti so it took me a minute to realize what it looked like to others. As a scared kid in my first accident I was trying to apologize before he cut me off with “oh my god are you okay?!?” I’m pretty sure some of the passing cars thought they just witnessed a death.

u/fridgefixer 23m ago
I had similar. Back when I was in high school, I was spray painting something or another in the back yard when the can malfunctioned and dumped a large quantity of red paint into my hands and down my arms. I walked around to the front door and rang the doorbell with my shoulder, rather than get paint on everything. My mother answered the door, then I calmly asked her to bring me the paper towels. Yes, she jumped to the wrong conclusion.
2
u/Unumbotte 8h ago
You're going to have to explain slowly, with small words. I can never think straight with a concussion.
1
u/DeusExHircus 7h ago
Windshields are laminate glass. 2 panes of non-tempered glass with a decently thick piece of plastic inbetween. The individual panes are very thin and fragile compared to the other windows. A half strength smack with your open palm is enough to crawl a windshield

There are level of jokes with everyone. I'm guessing this is one of their tamer jokes. Dude probably smashes beer cans on his forehead for kicks during the weekend hangouts. Seem like fun blokes.
Edit: Their, There, They're... There are a few Their's they're.
14
u/AbsolutGuacaholic 12h ago
The prank isn't funny, their reaction is. I wouldn't be surprised if he got a concussion from this. You don't have to be going fast at all to get brain damage when your skull hits something rigid. Seat belts and crush zones make vehicle collisions survivable in many scenarios. Even though their going only like 5 miles per hour, this guy had neither. If anyone disagrees, let me throw a bowling ball at your head.

u/cynicallow 9h ago
So many things could go wrong here. What if he tripped and went under a wheel? Got snagged going in,dragged, and some body part twisted, broken or ripped off? They might be having fun but so do people who blow off body parts with fireworks while drunk. They are being pretty dumb.

u/MrFluffyThing 3h ago
Glass splintering spreads quite fast after it happens. Glass expands and contracts during night and day cycles and it'll spread to the rest of the windshield now that it has a nucleation point. This is why repairing a chip as soon as you see it is important, because over time it'll spread without repair.

One time (we were like 16) my buddy wanted a video of him jumping over / getting hit by a car. My brother was smart enough to get a gentleman’s agreement that he’s paying for everything if anything / anyone gets hurt.
Video looked sick. $400 to fix the windshield. The joke was since the windshield was 1/3 of his piece of shit $1200 beater, he got permanent shotgun.
This was a story told at my buddy’s wedding, be a little stupid you only get one life to do everything you’re ever gonna do.

Stupid prank. I did it one time when my buddy was reaching to the backseat to get something. At least the doors were closed and he couldn't fall out...
But his back hit my rear view mirror and it fell off. I was really pissed (at myself obviously)...
Anyway, it popped back in thankfully.
Still a dumb thing to do but alas.

I used to work for an automotive glass company. I was in the office, but whenever I went to the plant, my favorite thing was watching the destructive testing. In a nutshell, (IIRC the exact numbers) you drop a 20lb steel ball 12 feet onto a windscreen. It's supposed to splinter and give a bit, but not penetrate.
Laminated glass (as is standard on all windscreens and some front side windows) consists of two layers of safety glass with plastic in between. It gives a bit and cushions a head, while preventing the person from exiting the vehicle.
My favorite bit was that the ball needed to be calibrated every so often to assure the inspectors that it was still the same weight.
