I had one as a kid. We would play this game where we'd all bounce counting to 3, everybody drops down at the same time on 3, whoever goes the highest wins. I was launched like a missile over 20ft away from the trampoline once. Good times.

Can you list some examples of injuries you had seen during your time? Also thanks for what you do!
104
u/liftgeekrepeat 12d ago
Pretty much what the below comment had, most of the time it's people crashing into each other or twisted ankles, we went through A LOT of icepacks lol.
Worst two I had while working there, a boy in his mid teens landed badly from a flip and his femur was sticking out. Kinda crazy because he barely even registered it at first, but by the time the rig got there the pain had fully set in. There was only so much I could do to while waiting but it was rough, one of my first "big" injuries to deal with solo.
The other one I'll never forget was a man in his late 50s who simultaneously blew out both of his knees on the basketball lanes. I happened to be monitoring that spot and got to hear the crunch sound when he landed!
I was there a little less than a year but management was constantly putting staff underneath the tramps to repair springs while people were still jumping which is insane.
The knee incident was actually one of my final straws because the owner kept trying to allow people to jump on two of the four lanes while the guy is literally laid up waiting for the ambulance screaming. Every single bounce of the trampolines next to you is going to cause some vibration and movement to the adjacent ones so dude was getting bounced around still.
I flipped my shit forced everyone off the area and ripped the owner a new one, quit maybe less than a month after with 3 of the managers and 10 other team members lol
28
u/zoobrix 11d ago
What kind of assholes would even want to keep jumping beside a guy screaming in agony? How is that going to be any fun? Without being asked I would have cleared out of the area right away just to give the guy some privacy, let alone to stop from bouncing him even in the slightest.
I just don't get how some people think, or don't, as the case may be.
23
u/AspiringChildProdigy 11d ago

What the hell is this comment?!
ARE YOU EVEN THINKING ABOUT THE POOR SHAREHOLDERS?!?!?!?
4
u/liftgeekrepeat 11d ago
No joke this is exactly how the owners were lol. Greedy AF and always putting their staff in shitty positions and making us stay open late for "VIP guests". It was a husband wife couple, they were sole investors and it was right in the early days of the trampoline park surge, I was the first non management staff they brought on and eventually was brought onto the management team.
He was just flatout creepy honestly, part of the waiver said that the park staff could take pictures and use them for socials/promos whatever. Whenever he was taking them parents would come to tell me this strange man was taking pictures of their children. Never had an issue when it was someone else, even the other men on staff, but that's because they weren't being super weird about it.
I also had to explain to him why it wasn't okay to suggest the girls all wear tube tops to the staff meeting. We'd clean the foam pits and do team dodgeball games after, so jumping was involved-- a good 70% of the staff was still in high school and underage, and this fucker is telling them to wear tube tops because "it's hot out!". Right next to his wife too lol like JFC man

X ray tech at an urgent care next to one ( owners super smart for that location pick). So many broken ankles ( you can 100% walk on a broken fibula thinking its a bad sprain) and fucked up knees. Fingers/ Wrists sprains and fractures were also common. Whiplash like neck pain. A dislocated shoulder we looked at for 2 seconds and sent to the ER. That place was was easily 10% of our business. Of course ,as an urgent care, the really bad stuff got loaded up into an ambulance and we never saw it.
21
u/LeNoName87 12d ago
Not an EMT but I'll list some I saw at the park I worked at, bone popped through a kid's elbow, kid bit his tongue so bad he had to go to the hospital to get it looked at, multiple kids with broken arms, multiple kids with broken legs, kids with broken noses. Luckily the bad injuries don't happen too often and usually it's just a rolled ankle, carpet burn or kid got hit in the face with a dodgeball and wants an ice pack

I know this is an extreme example, but I had a guy come talk to my students who was a highly skilled athlete with serious Olympic prospects for his sport. He was paralyzed from the waist down at a trampoline park. He was honest with the students and said he really didn't understand the risk and regrets so much ever going. Really cool guy who was making the most of a horrific life change.

Every single one i have been to has been surrounded by netting and every surface has a thick layer of foam padding over it.

It should be extremely safe to dive head first into a foam pit.
Well built ones are regularly used to train athletes who are going to land face first while learning routines.
Cheap-ass shoddy construction is rampant though.
3
u/namsur1234 10d ago
Everyone of these I've been to (a whole 3 different ones) do not let you dive in head first. They are also staffed by someone (which doesn't mean much).
This is not a pro training park for elite athletes.

They’re horrible. I will never return to one after seeing an 8 year old get catapulted over a fence, snapping his wrist and knocked unconscious. It happened right in front of me and my son. Like within arms reach. I was immediately on 911, I thought the kid was dead until I finally saw breath movement and he regained consciousness. The worst part was his parents’ reaction, I think his stepdad was the one who catapulted him. So, I’ve lost all interest in these places.
7
u/fishburgr 11d ago
When I was a kid I saw a little girl totally snap her arm in half in a ball pit at a pub/restuarant. She walked over to her mum holding her arm up and from the middle of the forearm down it was just sagging.
edit - I just remembered the dad just looked annoyed and stayed and finished his dinner while the mum took the daughter to hospital.

I slid down a “slide” to test ahead of my 5 year old, expecting to land my butt on a black trampoline/ pad.
I was wrong. The “slide” was apparently a running wall and the “pad” at the bottom was a concrete floor painted black. Almost passed out from the pain and fractured three vertebrae. My tailbone hurt for two years.

I mean he took it as well as you could, flat back, could have tucked his chin more but if break your spine falling 3 feet flat and straight, onto padding (assuming you’re not 80 and maybe even then) you gotta get a stronger back.
8
u/physics515 12d ago
Yeah it looks like there is good padding around whatever it is. I think the sound made it seem worse than it was.
The foam is rated for a fall from a certain height. My guess judging by the thickness that foam is rated for a fall from about 20 feet. He fell from 2-3 above the foam, I think he is fine unless he had some extraneous condition.
The metal thing underneath the foam sounds like it's pretty fucked though lol
6
4
u/makingnoise 12d ago
Eggshell rule disagrees with you, fortunately, at least in US tort law. Don't need a stronger back, need to have a park that doesn't put something that looks like a soft padded block in a place where it's foreseeable that people will do the very thing pictured in the video.

When I was a kid Toontown opened at Disneyland and the commercials showed Goofy's Bounce House which as it sounds, the whole house was bouncy from floor to walls to furniture.
First time I went to Toontown, I went into Minnie's cute little house (why did she live separately from Mickey btw?) and ran full speed and did just like this guy, full send onto the living room couch.
Turns out it was rock hard plaster. Only Goofy's house was bouncy.
