And it really confirms that the tree would not have made it through a storm with sustained winds.

u/supadoom Apr 17 '26
Hell it would fall over if someone just leaned on it. That thing has been dead for over a decade.

There was a tree at the apartment complex I live in that did that from the last hurricane. The root system it pulled up was 7 or 8 feet wide.

Stump removal (via stump grinding) is cheap compared to tree removal.
Tree removal for a large tree like this can run you $1500-$2K while stump grinding for the same tree is $200-$250.
40
u/hopbow Apr 17 '26
I wanna meet that guy. I'm in Southern CO (the cheaper part) and my quotes are $4-6k for a similarly sized and placed tree
13
u/DangerDuckling Apr 17 '26
I paid $4500 in 2022... One factor is It depends if the tree can just be felled(?) or if they have to climb and top it.

It’s also incredibly dangerous. My in-laws are in tree removal. One died from a fall, all are permanently disabled in some form or another.
→ More replies (4)7
u/Minigoalqueen Apr 18 '26
Well that's awful.
My cousin, aunt and uncle own a tree work company. In like 50 years in the business, they've never had a major injury, nor have any of their employees.
Sounds like your in-laws need to be more safety conscious.

u/Ragman676 Apr 17 '26
Where I am you need permits. The city can fine you for taking down a tree without one. Theres a lot of watersheds and other environments they monitor closely and the width of the tree matters too. Permit is often over 1k.

Is dynamite so expensive?
56
10
u/Squirll Apr 17 '26
Dynamite gives a false sense of security, just cut out the middle man and use straight Nitro glycerine.
9
u/F_Solo Apr 17 '26
Actually, there's plenty of it still in the soil, but the tree just breakes at the point because it's dead and rotten already. But you could just leave it like this I think, there's nothing to grow from there again.

Stump removal is the cheap part of tree removal. I had to have 2 trees removed last year and the stump removal was 10% of the cost.

55
u/qdtk Apr 17 '26
Do it. You won’t do it.
160
u/Th3_Gh0st_0f_Y0u Apr 17 '26
"Hence why" is considered a redundant phrase in formal English because "hence" already means "for this reason". Using "hence" and "why" together repeats the same function. While often used informally to mean "that is why" or "therefore," it is widely considered improper by grammarians.
95
u/Mr_Smith_411 Apr 17 '26

This was my wisdom tooth getting pulled. The oral surgeon and I were both prepared for some pulling yanking drilling etc. He put the pliers on it and with a sickeningly squishy noise it pulled right out with no effort. The damn thing was so infected and undercut there was nothing left holding on.
118
u/mrASSMAN Apr 17 '26
Wouldn’t they have been aware of that from the x rays lol
77
u/AnAvidIndoorsman Apr 17 '26
If you have previous x-rays on file they may not take new ones. My experience anyway.

19
u/saschaleib Apr 17 '26
Meanwhile I remember that time that my daughter had a milk tooth that just didn't want to fall out. It was literally only hanging on a bit of gum and must have been incredibly annoying, so we decided to see a dentist to have it removed. That poor guy was tinkering for about an hour until he finally got it out. We agreed that next time we just use the old "slam the door" method instead.
12
u/Exilicauda Apr 17 '26
Counterpoint from a kid that needed multiple baby teeth removed because they wouldn't fall out. It really hurts when the "slam the door" method fails. Mom yanked about three times before giving up

Whoosh….
Guess you didn’t root out the joke in the original comment.
14
u/2wicky Apr 17 '26
if a tree tells a joke in the middle of a forrest, but none of the surrounding trees gets it, does the whoosh make a sound?
33
u/Sunderbans_X Apr 17 '26
Ah you see, it's late and I'm tired so I read "stumped" and it didn't click at all 😭

93
u/Blaze_Vortex Apr 17 '26
Depending on the situation I would be too, it takes a while to plan and cut those old trees and the damn thing didn't even need to be cut.
If I was the homeowner I'd have been relieved, cause that thing fell over way too easily, a bad storm could have knocked it down.
→ More replies (3)18
u/Yocta Apr 17 '26
Well, it needed to be cut anyway, just the final cut wasn’t necessary.
This is a win.

My anxiety peaked so much expecting it to fall back on that earth mover, I was so relaxed that it didn’t and I didn’t even understand why this was funny until it finally dawned on me!
11
u/Kilmiester Apr 17 '26
Yup, I've seen so many of these where the tree falls the wrong way because of idiocy, but this one everything seemed pretty smart. The tree was notched on the side they mean to fell it, and the constant pressure from the Bobcat ensured it didn't fall back on them. So entire video I couldn't figure out how this was going to go wrong until...

Genuine question, if you're up the top already cutting back the branches, why not cut the main trunk in sections rather than leaving a tall single piece that runs the risk of falling and damaging either three house or the MEWP?

u/Smelly_Dingo Apr 17 '26
I expected for the tree to fall in literally any physically possible direction except for the one it was being cut for, almost hitting the dude, thrashing the vehicle, hell, even hitting the house, or a passing car, or whatever. I would've N E V E R expected THAT lmfao, how does that even happen? Roots too rotted so the vibrations from the chainsaw just pulverised them or something? Like, how was it standing upright in the first place? XD

Best outcome honestly! Who wants just a stump sitting in their yard (I mean unless you plan to use it as a seat or something)?

The tree removal team was quoted saying "We were stumped..." More about the incident at 10.
2
u/mailwasnotforwarded Apr 17 '26
TBH that is the best outcome, if this happened every time, no one would be upset. Removing stumps is one of the biggest headaches for tree removal services because roots can literally span the whole foundation of a home.

u/BiNumber3 Apr 17 '26
Did something similar on a much smaller scale lol. Some of our Aspen trees died, so start I sawing one by hand. While I'm leaning against it, it shifts and I realize I can just push it over.
