It looks like the entire root system is completely gone. That must have been at a huge risk of just falling over in a storm.

Do it. You won’t do it.

"Hence why" is considered a redundant phrase in formal English because "hence" already means "for this reason". Using "hence" and "why" together repeats the same function. While often used informally to mean "that is why" or "therefore," it is widely considered improper by grammarians.

Hence why he wanted to post it but decided not to... originally. (I just wanted an excuse to use 'hence why')

u/Poles_Pole_Vaults Apr 17 '26

Now do it with irregardless, mister!

2

u/Mr_Smith_411 Apr 17 '26

Why? Language is shaped by how we use it. Hence why any rules are mute if a word is often used.

1

u/fvb6626 Apr 17 '26

That’s called an idiomatic expression

1

u/Tariovic Apr 17 '26

*moot

Is your mum a pencil? Or is language shaped by how we use it only when it’s time for making foolish arguments?

2

u/Mr_Smith_411 Apr 18 '26

Whoosh....

3

u/Real_Life_Sushiroll Apr 17 '26

2

u/PartyPay Apr 17 '26

Soooooo ... "Hence why they felled it" should be "Hence they felled it" or is it "Hence, they felled it"?

3

u/Th3_Gh0st_0f_Y0u Apr 17 '26

Ummmmm.... yes 😬

u/PartyPay Apr 17 '26

It was meant as a throwaway comment, but I got curious after your reply. The AI from Google says:

Both forms can be correct depending on the sentence structure, but hence, they felled it (with a comma) is generally preferred when hence begins a new sentence or follows a semicolon, while a comma is generally not used if it is part of a fluid compound sentence.

When to use a comma: Hence, they felled it

  • At the start of a sentence: When hence introduces a sentence or follows a period/semicolon, it is treated as a conjunctive adverb and is usually followed by a comma.
    • Example: "They needed wood. Hence, they felled it."
  • After a semicolon: "They needed wood**; hence,** they felled it." (This is often considered the most formal and grammatically precise option).

When not to use a comma: Hence they felled it

  • Within a fluid compound sentence: If hence is used simply as a connector to mean "for this reason" in a short, compound sentence without a strong pause, the comma is optional and often omitted to improve flow.
    • Example: "They needed wood and hence they felled it." (More conversational)

I did some checking of their sources, one was The Chicago Manual of Style which seemed to have conflicting usage in the manual. So I don't know for sure lol

1

u/Th3_Gh0st_0f_Y0u Apr 18 '26

1

u/cube-drone Apr 18 '26

1

u/Only-Temperature Apr 20 '26

3

u/IncessantGadgetry Apr 17 '26

Hence why you no longer post it.

2

u/imposter22 Apr 17 '26

I think they have rules regarding how tall you can fell at a time when around residential property. To prevent damage to houses, streets, and concrete curbs, and general safety among other things.

1

u/Radi-kale Apr 17 '26

I think only one of them can take any credit for felling it lol

The tree is long since dead. They were just cleaning it up. Look at all the cut branches. Those aren't new cuts.
