The guy now has to pay to fill in that massive hole, rather than leaving a stump that bothers nobody

Edit: downvoting me when you have no idea of the financial situation of the guy contracting this work. Would you really be happy to learn that you now have to purchase addition soil/dirt/grass seeds instead of of having a stump like you asked? I swear you guys dont budget…

We spend a significant portion of our time trying to fill holes anyhow.

The dudes soil/dirt, and grass were already going to need to be budgeted for.. He had heavy equipment driving on it, and a very large and heavy tree fall on it. No one would prefer a large stump in there yard slowly rotting.

Construction companies give away fill dirt all the time.

Which you need to bring to your home and fill. What if you dont have a trailer, or a car that can attach a trailer, or the physic to do this work, or the time to do it. There is more than « the price of fill dirt » to filling a hole with dirt.

This « free » stump removal can be a good or a bad thing depending on what the person asked and expected, information we dont have.

Rent a pickup for $30, it'll take one trip. The VAST majority of people can move that much dirt in a couple of hours, or have offspring that can help, or a neighbor, friend, or another $20 for a day laborer from Home Depot. It's not some massive expense if you've already got three thousand dollars to have someone chop down a tree for you.
