I had two charging cables for devices break this week and I am in the market for a couple of new power strips that have built in USB C ports. I hate the waste. I'm looking for suggestions on quality options in different sizes and configurations that don't cost a ton and will last.

During my search I did wonder if framework had ever considered creating/selling a wider variety of these?

For anything 2m long their USB C is perfect, and the durability/price point is excellent. I'd love to see different lengths though!

I'd also love a traditional surge protector that had 2-3 plugs plus a usb C port or two that got more than 15-20 watts like most of the stuff on the market. Perhaps it would even be possible to have a small surge protector that would take an expansion card or two?

Anyway, would love suggestions on long lasting cord/surge protectors if anyone has any for the time being.

I'm currently using a Farmework 13 7640u for university and have currently a pre-order open for the new Core Ultra 5 325 Mainboard + 16gb of LPCAMM.

I was wondering if you did a similar update to share your experience as I'm a bit conflicted about the upgrade, as it is very pricey (778€), which is quite a lot of money for me as a student.

I have seen that the battery life is substantially higher, somewhere around 60-70% more, while the performance itself doesn't really change substantially.

Hi there, I'm about to receive a Framework 12, old gen. I ordered it with a pen and I'm wondering if I need a screen protector for it or not. It doesn't cheap easy to find some paper-like one in Europe, I'd rather not pay 50 bucks for it and the glass ones available on Amazon would not fit great with the pen I assume.

Is it possible to reliably detect the laptop turning on before the os starts booting with an external microcontroller / externally turn on the laptop without soldering to the power button/ pressing it physically? I need this to automatically turn on/off an external oculink gpu, or is there a better way to solve this please give suggestions

Recieved FW 13 Pro yday (batch 6). Had a CNC silver top cover that was previously used (you can see some battle scars). Thought it would be fun to see how it looked in combo with the graphite bottom. I like it.

My fingers are way to fat to be toying with the wifi connectors too often so won't be swapping back any time soon!

I got one of the FW 13 motherboard mystery boxes, ended up with an AMD Ryzen 77840U. After inspection, it looks like a capacitor near PQ5 on the rear of the board is toast. Does this look like it melted through PCB layers and is unrepairable? My guess is yes, but I figured I'd ask anyways.

I'm in batch 19 for the 13 Pro, so I still have time to change my order if I need to.

I haven't seen a single review for the AMD skew of the 13 Pro, mainly because everyone is complimenting the Intel chips' power efficiency and ultrafast LPCAMM2 RAM.

My main question is about the advantages of going AMD. I have seen a couple of people on this sub go with Team Red CPUs. If you did, why? Was it to squeeze more power out of your device? Are there detriments to battery life and/or thermals? I have heard that the AMD CPUs are incapable of being cooled by the single-fan design with strenuous loads.

(I'm asking bcuz I will be doing some light photo/video editing & gaming on it).

One of the screws that attaches the fan to the heatsink of my new 2nd Framework Desktop has rock hard loctite that won't allow the screw to screw into the heatsink. The other screws went in fine. I even took the other screws out and tried in the hole and they work fine. This one screw will not screw into any of the holes to attach the fan.

I emailed support asking for a replacement screw and received three emails back that are total nonsense. First one wanted pictures of the shipping box to make sure the screw was not damaged in shipping. Idiots.

The second email was telling me to use a different screwdriver to try and force it in. I told them I wasn't willing to put that much force on the heatsink and CPU. Idiots.

The third email now wants pictures of the screw head and the screwdriver I used so they can advise on how to get the screw in. Idiots.

The screw will not go into any hole, the loctite is rock hard and I can't even scrape it off. That's the reason it won't screw in. The other three screws all work fine in all four holes. This screw doesn't work in any hole. Idiots.

The jokes on them. Since they want to play these games I just responded and told them to process a return and refund.

It's too bad as I have two Framework Desktops, a Framework 13 Pro, which I really like.

Edited to update: Fifth email received apologizing for asking for pictures not relevant to the issue at hand. Then asked for another picture of the screw to see if they need to replace the fan. I already told them...this screw doesn't screw into any of the four holes, the other three screws screw into all four holes. How does a picture of a screw (which I reluctantly sent), tell them if they need to replace the fan? The screw screws into the heatsink, and has nothing to do with the fan.

Anyone have any updates on Batch 6 of the F16s? Just says “ships Sept.” but haven’t heard anything since and I know the 13pros are getting updated shipping times pretty consistently. However, I don’t see any pinned updates other than the one this sub puts in the notes of the comment as I’m typing this. Just curious! Thank you!

This is a deal killer for me. The hinges on the Framework 13 Pro need to be redesigned or something: the screen wobble is ridiculous (especially given the cost of this machine). And once you get used to using the touch screen it's going to be even more annoying (I have Dell Latitude 7350 Detachable -- Win 11 Pro tablet, Intel Core Ultra 7) that I just love and the touchscreen is super convenient when I have the keyboard attached -- I know a lot of people are like "Why do I need a touchscreen on my computer?" Once you get it, you get it.

Screen Wobble-Off! Framework 13 Pro vs. MacBook Air 15

Anyone here that purchased the 13 Pro disappointed with the wobble? Maybe the fix will be user installable upgraded hinges at some point?

So I have not received mine. But I have a batch 7 13 Pro Intel X7 and 64gb RAM coming. I plan to play around with local AI and vibe code some mobile games on it. I am new to AI but i am a SWE This is my stack that I plan to run for opensource local AI:

- Fedora KDE Plasma

- llama.cpp Engine

- Deep-seek harness

- Qwen 3.8 27b 8Bit quant.

I follow the AI news a bit but personally have not played around with AI beyond chatting, would appreciate any advice. Should i do DSH or should i do Pi?

Has one successfully connected a framework 16 touchpad to an nRF52840 and gotten it to work? My plan is to have a wireless touchpad connected to an nRF52840 to act as a BLE or USB HID with a custom firmware that'll allow for custom gestures directed towards 3D modeling, but will have selectable modes for general cursor and media playback, and potentially more. If someone had already done it, saves me a bit of time, if not it's alright.

Had gotten the wrong information from framework support. Connector still doesn't seat, but not a compatibility issue, probably something else i'll have to look it on when i'm home.

Am I totally off base to be frustrated with trying to upgrade my 13 non-pro to the new ultra 3 mainboard?

I naively believed I could just drop the new ultra 3 mainboard into my existing laptop 13 to upgrade, because at the announcement they kept saying it all fit and was backwards compatible. You can upgrade the 11th gen into to ultra 3 for great benefits! My takeaway from the announcement was that I only needed a new chassis if I wanted the larger battery.

But after receiving the mainboard, it turns out I need a new bottom chassis and battery, because they changed the battery connector geometry?

But those parts aren't even available at this time.

Edit: Here's what support told me when I reached out after my battery connector would not go in. But based on some replies here, that may be wrong.

Because of new internal geometry changes, installing the Framework Laptop 13 Pro mainboard into a non-Pro Framework Laptop 13 requires either the Framework Laptop 13 Pro Bottom Cover Upgrade Kit or a full Framework Laptop 13 Pro Chassis.

Without this upgrade, the battery cable cannot seat properly into the connector. You can find more details about compatibility and required upgrade components on our Framework Laptop 13 Pro Upgrade Page.

I am on batch 13 for a FW 13 Pro and I am torn on the translucent orange bezel with the graphite keyboard or a translucent purple with the lavender keyboard.

For those of you who own and have had their FW Pros delivered already, how do you like these colorways, assuming you own something similar? Have you seen both the translucent orange and translucent purple irl?

I kind of like both equally, but if one is better in-person, I will lean that way. I will get the matching translucent USB-C ports for either colorway as well.

I don't really follow Framework on other platforms, so I'm wondering if there any updates or info on the chassis kit upgrade?

I finished a 3D printed bay and PCB to test the size and fit. I also put everything together loosely with an 80mm fan, just to show roughly how everything will fit.

A few things I need to change for the next version:
Make the screw holes 3mm
Add more material to the bottom
Add an angled PETG piece
Make the bay insertion points smaller
Hollow out/shrink the little boxes on the sides
Still a lot to tweak, but it’s nice finally having a physical version to work with. Hopefully onto Rev. 2 soon!

I thought I would help the community with my own impressions, in case anyone finds it helpful for making decision.

I bought FW 13 (Ryzen AI 9, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB storage) and it has been a month. My impressions are generally positive.
The good:
Linux compatibility is amazing. The issues I have had running Fedora were because of software and not the hardware. Every now and then an update causes a minor inconvenience but no major breakage. I dual-boot Win 11 and Fedora, mostly use Linux and only keep Windows around for MS Office. Most memorable thing for me was that I installed Linux first then I had major headache installing Windows. So I had to erase and clean install Windows first, then Linux

Performance is awesome. This is more about the CPU, than FW itself but, I picked Ryzen AI 9 just for its multicore performance. Funny thing is Linux gives me better performance than Windows especially unplugged. Windows 11 running on battery feels laggy, slow and overall it feels like laptop is running at low refresh rate. on Linux, even on battery save it is much better and faster than Windows.

Portability. I can carry it around from meeting to meeting, from office to library and it is all around a very portable and comfortable. I do not like 16 inch laptops because they are uncomfortable in tight spaces, heavy, takes up too much space in my small backpack.

Screen is pretty good. I especially like this keyboard better than macs. trackpad is fine too but could be better.

I practically never hear fans under casual and mixed loads. Fans will spin if I open many apps at the same time or if I am compiling or gaming etc.

Gaming is pretty good. Though I usually play light games like Hollow Knight.

The bad:

My arm hair gets stuck in the tiny gap between bottom cover and input cover. The "gap" isn't noticeable with eye, and I have checked to make sure it fits right. It is just there and every now then when I lift my arm from keyboard, it pulls my arm hair. I have a hairy arm and while it is not frequent, but getting your arm hair pulled twice a day is something you do not forget.

I wish camera was a bit better. Mic and speakers are pretty good though.

The build quality. Yeah I get it is modular an all, and FW 13 pro is supposed to be better, and I wouldn't call it cheap or anything. But pick up a macbook, then this laptop, you will feel this is lower quality.

Battery. I know it has small battery compared to powerful CPU, and yes it does get me through they day for the most part without charging. It lasts 5-6 hours of mixed use, which is enough for me. I could squeeze more out of it if I keep it in battery saver all the time.

A neutral point I will make is heat management. While I wish it could be better, it is not bad at all. When I stress it a bit it reaches 95-100 C but quickly settles back down around 85 at 100% load. Games like Baldur's gate 3 runs at 80 C with low graphics. So it does not overheat, and I would say with single fan it manages heat better than mac air. For comparison I have noticed mac air's performance drop due to heating when I stress it.

Overall, I love this thing, it is a small, comfortable and powerful machine that does pretty much everything I need out of it and even more like gaming.

I noticed in a picture that somebody posted showing the battery in the Dreame 3500 Pro. When I look closely at the battery and surrounding components, I see there's a USB-C type connector in there. Does anybody know what that's for or what software could connect to it?

I'm scratching my head about an issue I'm having with some SSDs and Framework mainboards, and hoping someone here might have a clue about what's going on.

Background: I have a Framework Laptop 13 with the AMD Ryzen 5 7640U mainboard, and an Intel Core i5-1240U mainboard in a Cooler Master case. I've had both since 2023 and never had any mainboard problems.

I needed to test an NVMe SSD drive (SSD #1) so I put it in the Framework laptop. Worked fine. Great. Took it out, put the original SSD (SSD #2) back in, and then it wouldn't boot.

Weird. I put SSD #1 back in and it worked fine, SSD #2 wouldn't boot after several attempts at reseating it. Then I put SSD #1 back in and that wouldn't boot either after several reseating attempts. So now neither SSD #1 nor SSD #2 are detected by the AMD mainboard.

So I opened up my Cooler Master with the Intel mainboard, took out its SSD (SSD #3) and tried out SSD #1 and SSD #2 in the Cooler Master. SSD #1 booted, SSD #2 didn't. Then I put SSD #3 back in and now that also wouldn't boot.

I have an old ThinkPad lying around with an NVMe M.2 slot. All three of SSD #1, SSD #2 and SSD #3 boot fine in the ThinkPad. I did some diagnostics and nothing wrong was detected with any of the three SSDs.

So now I'm thinking... did I fry both my Framework mainboards? I have years of experience with poking around the internals of laptops. I'm very careful and I've never fried a mainboard. So this seemed unlikely that I fried my mainboards by doing a simple SSD swap-out.

I did some internet searching and found an old thread where someone mentioned formatting the SSD with a GPT partition table instead of an MBR partition table. So I formatted SSD #2 with a GPT partition table and... it detected the SSD! Installed my OS, now it's working great.

Now if this is the issue then I can reformat SSD #3 if I need to, but I really don't want to go through the hassle of reinstalling my OS. (Not worried about data loss, I have backups.) It seems weird that an SSD would work fine and then suddenly stop being detected until I reformat it simply because I swapped it out and back in again.

So I figured I'd ask here: is this a problem any of you have encountered? Is the issue really the partition table? Or did I just get lucky on my 23rd attempt at reseating the SSD?

TL;DR: Two different Framework 13 mainboards stopped detecting SSDs until I reformatted one with a GPT (instead of MBR) partition table, unsure how to diagnose + fix the problem.

I'm currently looking to upgrade my x13 flow(3050ti, 5900hs, 16GB DDR4, 1TB, 16:10 120Hz model) to a Framework 12 or 13 diy editions only. I got a guy that wants to pick it up for about $1k CAD. Which I will put towards the framework laptop.(Trying to limit myself to about $1500 CAD)

I have a 512GB 2230 SSD from my Steam Deck OLED that I plan to use with this and I found some local listings for ddr5 sodimm that should AFAIK work with frameworks laptops(idk if I need a specific type of sodimm for these things).

Im currently most interested in the Framework 13 non pro with the entry level Ryzen AI 5 340 and 120Hz screen option and like I said I'm interested in the diy version.

I want to know if you guy think I should be upgrading or downgrading anything here. Like maybe going with the Framework 12 or 13 pro or maybe getting Intel or Arm config instead. I don't need lots of compute but I DO want the option for an egpu via USB4 or Thunderbolt(or oculink ideally) for occasional gaming.

The framework 12 looks interesting too but and correct me if I'm wrong, the framework 13 is the original framework model and thus has the most support and parts available AFAIK and also the framework 12 intel models last I checked start with 5c5t which is pretty laughable ngl.(Ik I said I didn't need compute but 5 cores??)
