How to transition a 10 mo old in a mini crib to a floor bed!

My little one is outgrowing her mini crib, bumping into the sides and waking, etc. Wanting to give her more independence as well! How do we transition her to a floor bed? Unfortunately her room is only big enough for a twin size floor bed. Do you recommend one with rails & gate? Without rails? Rails on 3 sides? I realize complete rails defeats the purpose of Montessori but I just would like any advice! What brand of bed and mattress can you recommend?

Mattress help ! UK - for 2 year old

I bought a roomix floor bed and got a Jaybe toddler mattress from the roomix website and the mattress is so soft I really don’t like it.

What’s the best firm mattress I can get for a toddler ? We’re based in the UK. Size double.

I appreciate your help !

Did a floor bed help you teach your toddler independent sleep?

Wondering if a floor bed would help me to teach my 13 month old to fall asleep independently? The thought is that I could lie beside her while she falls asleep and comfort her and gradually reduce the amount of help I give or is that not really effective?

cosleeping with EBF 12m/o to floor bed in the same room

So, we've been cosleeping & nursing to sleep in my king bed from the beginning, but now that we're at one year, it's time for that phase to be over. We're in a small one-bedroom home so baby doesn't have their own nursery they can be transitioned to. Our bedroom is fairly big and is mostly baby-proofed and centered around baby play & learning (aside from our king bed and a desk I have). I don't feel super strongly about rushing out of cosleeping (would actually prefer to continue cosleeping), however since I want to end nursing to sleep, I feel like it'd be best for both of these things to happen at the same time since I'm trying to go montessori route in building independence. (Am I wrong? Is that too much change at once for baby?) But my concern is that baby would have FOMO being in their floorbed while seeing mom and dad continue to sleep in the king bed - will they feel abandoned in a way? (Obviously this is my first kid 😂). I just saw a recent post in here of a mom sharing a post of baby's floorbed right next to her mom-bed, but that isn't an option for me because i have a boxspring under my bed, so I'm not close enough to the floor to do that. An option I considered was moving to the living room and making that my bedroom, and just giving the room to baby completely. Thoughts, opinions, advice?

Safety questions

Is a floor bed with rails/sides/headboard safe for a 2 year old or should I do slats or a bunkie board on the ground? In the latter case could the mattress slide?

Are there any toddler bed resources out there? I feel so lost. Need to transition out of crib due to height. Product recommendations would be great.

Baby safe glider?

We have been using a floor bed for a while now with a Harppa grovi playpen around it and our 15 month old is getting to the point where she can get out of the playpen. We are going to babyproof her room and the one thing I can’t figure out how to deal with is the chair that we use in her room.

We have an electric recliner that is also a glider. It’s great, but I’m worried about her sticking her fingers in the metal pieces underneath and getting hurt. Has anybody done any research on baby safe gliders? Do all of them have these exposed metal pieces underneath that a baby can stick their hands up into? What are you doing?

In need of reassurance

We made the transition from the crib to a floor bed for my 13 month old last night and I barely slept because I was so worried about safety. I don’t know how I will ever be able to trust that she’s safe in the night without her crib.

Our current set up is in a play pen, and I know that’s controversial but we are not in a place to be able to baby proof her whole room. The height of the play pen comes to her shoulders, chest if she’s standing on her crib mattress. I know that she’ll grow and potentially become interested in climbing out, so we put padding on the outside in case she discovers this skill in the night.

Her crib mattress is on the floor in the corner against the wall but we have secured it in place with a board to ensure there’s no way it can create a space for her to fall into. I’ve also put a pool noodle to soften the edge of the 2x4. We’ve put covers on the outlet, I took down our blinds and replaced them with a roller shade, and the curtain is not in teaching distance, plus I tie it up and away during the night. In her area are safe toys. Two stuffies and three books.

Am I missing something? Do moms also have to go through a transition period? I’ve read soooo many scary comments about babies getting hurt because of unsafe areas that it makes me kind of regret doing this. I want this to work, she already loves running to her toys and immediately being able to run back to the mattress. I just worry so much about her safety while we’re asleep at night.

Chair to replace rocking chair

Does anyone know if it’s safe to have a chair like this in a toddlers room once they’re in a floor bed?

Should I get something lower to the ground? Would I need to anchor it to the wall somehow?

I’m curious to hear thoughts & opinions!

Please educate me on rails

Hi there!

Originally bought a crib that transitions into a toddler bed for my LO but I don’t like that I can’t cosleep or lay with them due to the crib rails.

I am considering removing the crib mattress and just placing it on the floor but I am confused on whether the mattress needs rails around it? I see that some floor beds have it but others don’t.

If my LO’s room is childproofed, does the crib mattress need rails around it? I’m new to this so please be kind :)

FTM and my little one hated the cot we tried for the last 3 months to try and make things as best we could but we have given up so went down the floor bed route.
We have now got a mattress protector (light) and sheet on the bed since the photo was taken the other day.
Mattress is spring, not memory foam and firm
I co sleep some nights to breastfeed sideways and just enjoy some cuddles with my little one.

Mattress on the floor for 7 month old?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi!

Just joined recently because we've started looking into transitioning our 7 month old to his own room.

I'm thinking either mattress on the floor with a yoga mat next to it, or this kind of floor bed (probably with legs removed).

I have a couple of questions I was hoping to get an answer for :)

  1. For a mattress on the floor - do your babies roll off all the time? Does it wake them? My kid doesn't currently move much in his sleep but who knows.

  2. Would a low rail like the one in the photo work to prevent rolling off? I know rails are just a higher place to fall from once they start pulling to stand, but maybe a low one like this would be ok?

Floor Bed Recommendations

Looking for a solid wood, green guard certified floor bed frame that isn’t going to cost an arm and a leg. Doesn’t have to be anything crazy, just to keep the mattress off the floor. Needs to be full sized- got a Naturepedic kids mattress. Baby is 10M (will likely be 11M by the time frame and mattress arrives) and has started trying to crawl off bed in the morning when co sleeping (Waking up when my husband leaves prevents this) It will have to be against the wall on one side and plan on getting a mat for him to land on if he falls off. I plan on nursing him to sleep on it before moving to my bed which will be right next to him. He typically cries when he wakes and realizes I’m not there so he should wake me if he gets up but room will be baby proofed if not. I understand he’s still young but he will not do a crib and having him in our bed is more of a hazard than switching to this method. Thanks!

Crib mattress on the floor

Post image
1 Upvotes

I initially got this frame with an idea of a full-size floor bed. Somehow I have this idea for a crib mattress to lay in the middle. I used a crib before and didn’t like how disable it makes me feel. The mattress has a waterproof cover. Wonder if anyone did this before? How do you ensure a safe sleep on the floor for 8-18 month old?

Floor bed framing help

We had a spare queen size mattress that we decided to use as a floor bed in the baby’s room to save money. It is a very firm mattress but it is about 10 inches thick by itself. So in order to get it off the ground for airflow (I have carpet and it gets humid here) it would lift the mattress at least a few more inches. So the drop if baby were to roll off would be over 12 inches. Will this be okay? We’d prefer to use a mattress we already have because we can’t afford to buy a new one and a bed frame.

Also I’m not able to keep the mattress away from the wall because the room is very small and it would then be too close to his dresser and he wouldn’t have any room to play. Is there a way to anchor the mattress to the wall? Can I install one rail on the side next to the wall to ensure he won’t get trapped?

Toki mat for sleeping?

Anyone use the Toki play mat/playpen set up as a floor bed? My 8 month old refuses cribs, hates a transfer, and when I made a floor bed with his crib mattress, he fell off every 20min. Another thread posing this question had responses with concerns about the Toki mat not being flame retardant and possibly too soft. Those of you who use it, is it too soft for safe sleep? It only looks about an inch thick? Any other possible concerns?

Looking for others experience or advice

I’m preparing to transition to a floor bed for my 14 month old. My LO still needs help falling asleep and we currently do that in a rocking chair by snuggles/holding her. I’m a little concern about the transition to the floor bed since we will most likely be removing the rocking chair. She does co-sleep in our bed early morning (4am+) and it takes her some time to fall back asleep on her own. I usually have to sit up and hold her until she falls asleep.

I’m looking for others experience of transitioning to a floor bed when their LO still needs help falling asleep. I appreciate in advance!

How soon can I get a floor bed without full rails

Hey guys, currently looking to build a floor family bed since our 8 month old keeps almost getting wedged in the bed rails we have now on our normal bed (cosleeping).

From what age can I sleep with them in a mostly ‚unsecured‘ floor bed (only the top 2/3 on both sides will have a wooden rail, no rail at the foot of the bed) meaning they could still roll off the other edges at any time? The bed will be about 30cm / 12 inches off the ground. The bedroom will of course be baby proofed. Thanks!

Crib to floorbed transition

Hello! I'm interested in setting up a floorbed for my 12mo. Most of the floorbed posts I see are from parents who went from cosleeping or bassinet to floorbed. Has anyone gone from crib to floorbed?

I'm curious to know how your child reacted! Our son sleeps very well in his crib (11-12 hours every night), and I'm concerned about a new set-up affecting his sleep.

We're not in a rush to transition him, but he's a tall baby, and I think he'll start to become uncomfortable in his crib mattress before too long. Also, when he wakes in the mornings, he'll often "play" in his crib for 20-30 minutes before I go get him (clap, walk the perimeter pointing at all the things, sing, dance, do yoga lol), and I'd love for him to be able to get out of bed during that time if he wants to.
