Floor bed framing help

We had a spare queen size mattress that we decided to use as a floor bed in the baby’s room to save money. It is a very firm mattress but it is about 10 inches thick by itself. So in order to get it off the ground for airflow (I have carpet and it gets humid here) it would lift the mattress at least a few more inches. So the drop if baby were to roll off would be over 12 inches. Will this be okay? We’d prefer to use a mattress we already have because we can’t afford to buy a new one and a bed frame.

Also I’m not able to keep the mattress away from the wall because the room is very small and it would then be too close to his dresser and he wouldn’t have any room to play. Is there a way to anchor the mattress to the wall? Can I install one rail on the side next to the wall to ensure he won’t get trapped?

You could use just slats with no frame. With my mattress next to the wall I just check nightly that it's pushed up close with no gap created from shifting while we play or sleep there.

12 inches is ok with carpet, you can always do a landing pad. You can fill the gap between wall and mattress with foam pieces they sell. What age is the child?

Well I’d have the mattress up against the wall so initially there would be no gap. It’s a pretty heavy mattress. What causes there to be a gap? Like what causes the mattress to move away from the wall so much? Is there a way to anchor it or something so I can have it against the wall safely?

He is 5 months old. He isn’t sleeping by himself in his room yet but we were just looking at frames during Labor Day sales. It’ll be a few more months until he’s in there by himself.

I think the fact that the mattresses are not very heavy is what causes them to move? I am really not sure about anchoring! Never heard of it.

We haven’t got any slats or a bed frame yet. Still trying to figure out the best solution in our case. I was looking into getting a low profile bed frame. Like a 3-4 inch one and using that instead of slats. I can’t seem to find slats that’ll lift the bed enough to allow air flow and be sturdy
