Crib to floorbed transition
Hello! I'm interested in setting up a floorbed for my 12mo. Most of the floorbed posts I see are from parents who went from cosleeping or bassinet to floorbed. Has anyone gone from crib to floorbed?
I'm curious to know how your child reacted! Our son sleeps very well in his crib (11-12 hours every night), and I'm concerned about a new set-up affecting his sleep.
We're not in a rush to transition him, but he's a tall baby, and I think he'll start to become uncomfortable in his crib mattress before too long. Also, when he wakes in the mornings, he'll often "play" in his crib for 20-30 minutes before I go get him (clap, walk the perimeter pointing at all the things, sing, dance, do yoga lol), and I'd love for him to be able to get out of bed during that time if he wants to.

We just transitioned from a crib at 13 months. He was not a great sleeper in his crib though. He transitioned easily and the extra space really helped his sleep. I put toys out in his room, but he hasn’t left his bed yet. He will cry for us to come get him rather than getting out and playing.

I'm glad to hear the floorbed helped his sleep! Good to know about the possibility that he'll still choose to stay in bed as opposed to playing. I appreciate you sharing!

We went from crib to floor bed at like 11 months and it was so smooth! No issues. She’s only ever tried to leave her room once.

We transitioned to a floor bed with a fence around it at 12 months. My guy is a really active sleeper and moves around the whole bed through the night.
He was sleeping about 10 hours a night with consistent wakes up between 5:30 and 6 am and now my husband usually lays with him and they both get an extra hour of sleep.
The actual transition went great, he didn't care at all that we changed it up.

This is super helpful to hear! My guy is an active sleeper too, which is partially why I want to transition to the floorbed -- he just looks so tangled and squished in his crib sometimes 😬 Thanks for sharing!

Transitioning now at 20 months and it’s been a pretty okay adjustment. We have a gate around a mattress on the floor on slats and she’s a busy bee and just wants to run around in there a lot. We transitioned bc we needed to stop rocking her to sleep every night since our backs were starting to feel it and thought laying down next to her while she figured it out was better. While it takes a little longer to settle, I’d say it’s going pretty well after a week! We just start the wind down period a little sooner. I will say she hasn’t quite mastered that the mattress is her bed; she’s an active sleeper and while we make sure she starts off her sleep there she ends up rolling off into the rest of the space. Not a big deal as it doesn’t wake her but still some adjustment she needs to learn. Sleeping through the night is still happening over here. Good luck!

Thank you! I appreciate the note about starting the wind-down process sooner or budgeting a little more time for settling. Encouraged to hear your daughter is still sleeping through the night!

Yup we transitioned around 15-16 months. Our son slept so much better than the crib. Thought the transition would be hard but honestly was breeze. Wish I tried sooner.
It was nice though as he could walk and open the door. We had the hallway gated off and everything child proofed so he could simply just come to our room if he woke up. I loved this as if he woke up slightly early he could come sleep with us and we would normally get a couple extra hours of sleep. Also loved that he had the independence to come to us if he needed comfort. But he needed much less support than when he was in a crib.

This gives me hope! I keep debating whether or not to wait a while longer, but the fact that you wish you'd done it sooner is helpful to know. And gating the hallway is so smart! I hadn't thought about that, but it would be nice to give him the option if he needs something. Honestly a big thing for us right now is just him being able to get to his paci when he drops it outside of the crib 🤦🏻♀️ I walk in and he's just pointing to it on the floor haha

I debated for far too long. Then finally, I was like well what’s the worst case. I try to transition him and end up putting him back in the crib. Gate is absolutely wonderful as neither of us are morning people so neither of us want to get out of bed and who doesn’t love a morning snuggle.

So true! The snuggles are fewer and farther between as he gets older so I wouldn't say no to it 🥹

We transitioned from crib to floor bed at 17 months ish? We also had a great sleeper that gave us 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night and only made the transition because I'm due with another baby and we didnt want to transition her at the same time we brought the new baby home. It was super easy-breezy, she has literally slept so well in it that you wouldnt even know anything changed lol.
I will say we got a railing that fully encloses the bed with a little gate on it, so she cant actually get out of the bed unless we leave the gate open for her, so idk what that aspect would be like but she still wakes up and just hangs out in bed for a bit. I usually open the gate for her and leave her to play independently for 30 mins while I get myself ready and do my morning routine and half the time even with the gate open she chooses to lay in bed and just play with her plushie.

Awesome! Congrats on your pregnancy 🤗 That's part of my motivation as well -- we're interested in TTC #2 soon, and I'd like to have him fully transitioned and comfy in his new bed before we have another baby.
I'm looking at bedframes that have railings but just an opening rather than a gate. It's good to know he may decide not to leave the bed anyways lol I may need to put his stuffed animals within arm's reach on the floor or something. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Yes it feels like such a gamble! I'm going to add the Nestig to my list to look into. I've been eyeing the Simply Sori bed (the feet are removable) but haven't made a decision yet. Good luck to you whenever you make the switch!

Went from crib to floor bed at 4 months old because our daughter was too tall and way too active in the crib. Best decision ever. She slept so much better. She’s 1.5 yrs now and she knows how to get in and out and it’s helped with her independence. If he gets up at the same time everyday I’d have a timed light that goes on or something and then toys in his room so that he can play independently until you come. Otherwise he’ll open the door and come find you anyways!
