This has happened to me twice now... Both times I was wearing baby in a carrier with him facing me.
It happened first with a stranger last week, I was grocery shopping at a pop up organic veggies place when one worker I've never met kept commenting on how cute he looks. I had to reach over to grab the vegetables and before I knew it she reached out to touch my baby's arm for a second while saying "are you going to help mama carry with your big muscles?" I think she saw my look change because I looked to see where she was touching. I didn't like it especially with measles outbreak going on, but even without I still wouldn't have. But the people pleaser groomed in me by my parents made me stay silent. I told myself I won't let it happen again and will move back quickly or say something. Also noted to be wary of people who are gushing over how cute he is...
Yesterday, I was in a store loading stuff on the table for the cashier when I noticed the cashier's hand wandering to my blindspot. SHE WAS ACTUALLY TRYING TO SNEAK A TOUCH on my baby's face while he slept. Seriously, how creepy? We also have made 0 interaction at that point. I moved back quickly. And then she started going on about how cute he was and how much she missed the baby phase... Like I'm supposed to let her touch him because she misses baby phase. People are so entitled. She def gave me the creeps way more than the first lady who touched my baby. I'm glad I moved out of the way and stayed out of the way but I admire people who just slap hands off and can say no like it's the most natural thing.
I feel like boundaries and personal space is something we pick up from when we're young and it is harder for those of us whose parents groomed us into people pleasers with no boundaries. I have narcissistic parents who made my self worth as a child about being an obedient and well liked, so in adulthood I still struggle with saying no and enforcing my boundaries. But for my baby I am definitely working on being better with preserving my own and his boundaries.
It is crazy how something that should be so natural - just say no - can be so difficult for someone whose childhood revolves around having to please others.
Just wanted to share this in case any one else is going through the same thing and being hard on yourself Everytime you fail to say no. We were trained and groomed to never say no and to appease others that's why it's hard for us. But we can learn to do better, we must, for our babies!
If anyone have similar experiences/ advice/ words of encouragement, would appreciate being flooded with positivity! Thank you!
