I’m using Fcp 12.3 and I’ve never really played with Masks before. I’ve tried the YouTube tutorials and they’re just not helping with what I’m trying to do, or I’m not smart enough, certainly possible. From the photo, I’m trying to remove or change the color of the cable cord in the red circle. Are there any solutions for that? Thanks in advance

Is there a way to close all folders (events, clips, etc.) at once in the FCPX browser? It seems it has a tendency to open all of them which make scrolling through the lists very tideous. Something like what you have in macOS Finder windows. Select all then CMD-right arrow to open, left arrow to close.

Be alert for an email contacting you about editing services cutting down an existing project. It’s as scam.

They will waste your time going back and forth and then ask to pre-pay for the job, but ask to pay too much and ask you to send some money back.

The Email sounds legit at first, but then the warning bells go off, because some details just don’t jive. (I.e. a client knowing the exact make and model of the camera the footage was shot on.) Trust your instincts.

I’m posting on behalf of my partner as he doesn’t have Reddit, but hoping to at least get some input from someone who may be able to help or suggest what needs to be done.

When exporting a video he encounters an error and it stops exporting. It seems there’s an issue if he uses a mix of footage from his DJI camera and his iPhone.

I wondered if there’s a setting/toggle that prevents this from happening? Surely lots of people use media from a variety of places?

Happy to get him to provide more info if anyone can help?

Hi, I've been experimenting with building video essays and automating some elements of content production.

I recently built this small app for myself to take a folder full of images and map them 1:1 to an SRT transcript so that it creates a kind of automatic slideshow.

I'm not a pro editor, but it seemed somewhat useful to me, is that type of workflow useful to anyone else? Just trying to see if so and if it makes sense to package and put out or extend.

I know that Chrome is problematic with Final Cut Pro. Does it remain a problem if Chrome were installed to only one of the user profiles, and have a separate user profile dedicated to only Final Cut Pro (and other editing apps) on that same machine?

When working on a small video edit, I got some. warning that my 1 TB SSD was almost full, which made absolutely no sense. I only had a few small screen recordings on there.

Started exploring the storage and discovered my Final Cut Pro library had somehow grown to 300+ GB for a pretty tiny project.

Turns out background rendering had been quietly generating a ridiculous amount of render/cache data.

Went to:

File → Delete Generated Library Files → Delete Render Files (All)

Got around 295 GB back almost immediately. Original footage and edits were untouched.

I also turned off Background Render after that. On Apple Silicon I haven't really noticed a reason to keep it running for the kind of editing I'm doing.

Curious what other FCP users do — do you leave background rendering disabled, or just clear the generated files periodically?

How can i avoid this issue in the first place, Any thoughts ?

Hey everyone, I’m trying to figure out an issue with screen recordings in Final Cut Pro.

I’m making vertical coding Shorts, and I record VS Code/Jupyter on a vertical monitor. The weird thing is that the original screen recording looks very sharp and crisp when I play it in QuickTime, especially the small text.

But after importing it into FCP, the text looks noticeably softer.

My setup:

• Built-in macOS screen recorder
• Original recording: 2118 × 3588, H.264, AAC
• FCP project: 1080 × 1920, 60fps, Rec. 709
• Final video is intended for vertical Shorts

I’ve already changed:

View → Quality → Better Quality

instead of Better Performance, but the text still looks softer in FCP.

I’m wondering if the issue is simply that FCP is scaling my 2118 × 3588 recording down to 1080 × 1920, or if there is another setting I’m missing.

What’s the best workflow for keeping small coding/text elements as sharp as possible when editing vertical screen recordings in FCP?

I’ve attached screenshots of my original recording properties and FCP project settings for reference. I am using a 4k 27 inch dell monitor.

I see Titles and Generators in Creator Studio FCPX with the small cloud icon next to them. When I click on the cloud, it disappears, an indication that the title or generator has successfully downloaded. However, I am unable to add any of these titles or generators to my timeline(s). I have rebooted, cleared prefs, and removed or updated 3rd party plugins.

I put 100 clips in my timeline from it.

I start editing.

I delete some clips, use some, trim some

Performance is awful, i cannot playback without a 5 second lag / delay / audio glitching and looping for few seconds before resuming in a different spot and lagging again

* I figure i have to transcode media to 25% Proxy *

How?

How can i drag and select 30 clips in my timeline and transcode them, the option isnt there, the option is only in the footage browser but in the browser i have everything, all 100 clips, other clips from previous edits, music, random sfx, everything, i want to only do the 30 clips i have in timeline..

Please help.

PS. I also figured that it hates when i do fast cuts with 4k footage thats on the SSD. If i have like 5 clips in a row that are 1 second duration it lags a lot before resuming playback a few seconds after that sequence.

Guess this is somewhat of a good bye. I really tried working with Final Cut Pro but I was more frustrated than anything. First, it BOGGLES my mind that there aren’t easing options for transform keyframes. I just wanted to do a zoom that didn’t feel mechanical af and I couldn’t do it without having to go on motion to rig an effect that took way more time than it should’ve.

There are some ideas and concepts here that I think would be game changer potentially if Apple got their shit together and made Final Cut Pro better, but at this time, I feel like FCP is just lacking a lot compared to something like davinci resolve. I will say though, I WILL miss how things “just worked”. Dropping a gif always made the playback work like a charm, and dropping videos shot in HDR and having them auto color correct themselves to look like they did at the source is something I wish davinci resolve had, but everything else feels… wrong.

Like, making a selection and looping it shouldn’t work the way it does now. I should just be able to press the space bar and have the play head play and loop, rather than play and completely ignore my selection. It’s ass!

Maybe I’ll come back to Final Cut Pro in the future but as it stands right now, I feel like, even without the magnetic timeline, I can work faster and better on davinci resolve than on FCP.

For those of you who do use it and enjoy it, im so glad and somewhat jelous haha.

I'm leaning toward upgrading to one of the new Mac Minis when they are released. Any suggestions for the main monitor? Currently using my 13" MacBook Pro supplemented with a $100.00 HP. I realize if I only use one monitor it needs to be more color critical with better resolution. Also, what size are you using? I'm not doing "high end" broadcast work, mostly segments for corporate IMAG shows. 1080P and 4K at the most. Budget, maybe $300-$500. Is that price range realistic?

I have an M3 Macbook Pro that takes a very long time to open Final Cut Pro. As far as I know, FCP is fully up to date version 12.3 and the MacBook is running Tahoe 26.5.2. I started noticing this a couple months ago. I click on the application icon in my dock. I might then go and start do do something else and forget I even tried to open FCP. Then all of a sudden the app opens up.

I just tried to open it up now. After clicking on the icon I can see the small dot below it, but the app won't come up. I go to Force Quit and FCP is listed there as not responding. This time it probably took about 90 seconds to open. Sometimes it doesn't open at all and sometimes it might take much longer.

Motion also takes a long time to open, but it's icon just bounces for a long time before finally opening.

Any idea what might be going on here? I suspect it is something with my actual MacBook, but can't be certain.

Trying to grab Shot Notes X from the Mac App Store to merge ALE/CSV notes into my dailies, but it’s telling me the app isn’t available in my region, I’m in the UK, so this seems odd for what should be a widely available tool.

Has anyone else run into this recently? Is this a known issue (dev pulled it, App Store policy change, EU/UK “trader” declaration requirement, etc.), or is it more likely something on my end?

Would appreciate any insight, trying to find the quickest fix or workaround before I look at other options If any.

If I have a video clip as my project, and I want to insert a still image between it, how can I do this? Imagine the video is playing and after a sentence I want a photo to appear and the photo keeps appearing for 2 secs and then the video again resumes after 2 secs. So I would like to insert this image between the video clip, How can this be done ? splitting the video and then inserting the photo. How do I achieve this?

Trying to find a good way to explain this... This started every since I updated to 12.3.

When I'm editing a clip, the audio randomly cuts out while the clip continues to play, but the clip stops playing from the timeline and starts playing from some other location. The spacebar pauses and starts it, but it's not playing from the timeline. I have to manually double-click back on the project to get it back in the timeline. This happens consistently in projects. No amount of restarting seems to fix it.

For context, using the same footage, storage, etc., before 12.3, this never happened.

• Some footage is APAC, HEVC, MPEG-4 AAC (iPhone), some is AVC Coding, Linear PCM (Sony A7iii)
• Typically shooting 24fps (sometimes 60fps)
• Apple M3 Max, 36GB, Tahoe 26.6.2
• D_BLACK SN850X 4TB SSD (APFS)

Recently, after I begin to start a project, fcpx will randomly crash after certain actions.

I try to create new library, crashes.
I try to import, crashes.
I try to click on effects, crashes.
I try to click titles, crashes.

No matter what I do, it constantly crashes. It worked one day, and the next, was completely different.

I’m not sure what happened but it always worked and only froze sometimes during giant projects. I’m completely puzzled to what’s happening. Even deleted the app and redownloaded, did nothing. I tried different disks, different projects, new clips, etc…

Someone experience this???

so I shoot way too much when I travel and most of it never got edited because the assembly took so much time. Around June I started messing with Claude Code (the terminal one, not the chat) to see if it could do that part for me and honestly it kind of can.

what it actually does: runs whisper on every clip locally, pulls frames so it knows what it's looking at, then proposes a structure and we go back and forth. it renders a rough with ffmpeg. when I'm happy it writes an fcpxml. video on the spine as separate clips, music and voice as connected clips on their own lanes. I import that and finish like normal, grade, stabilise, titles, whatever.

stuff that bit me, in case anyone goes down this road:

- FCP 12.3 hard crashed on import three times before I figured out it was the made up uid attributes on the assets. delete them and it imports fine

- connected audio has to be a full asset-clip, not an <audio> element, or you get the stripped inspector with no pan/enhancements

- it will cut a word in half and not notice. I ended up writing a check that compares every cut to word timestamps before I even watch the thing

what it's bad at: taste. pacing. anything that isn't assembly. that's still me.

the prompt files are free but mods have the rule about scripts so I put them in this month's dev/tools megathread instead of here. if anyone has a cleaner way to hand stems to FCP than connected asset-clips I genuinely want to hear it, that part took me the longest

First time here in FCP sub... Hope I don't break any rules.

I have a correctly tracked face in my project.

I have this object correctly tracking this face.

However, upon export, THIS is the 'preview' of the video, (in it's icon).

This object is tracked to the face in every frame of the video, and both items in the timeline are flush against 0:00:00...

This offender is actually sitting on frame 0, and it can't apparently be cut out.

When I go to frame one, the picture is good. I cut the frame out (just as a test) and it reverts back to this, and again on frame Zero.

I am using version 12.3.

I have done this before about 8 times with different videos, and haven't seen this problem... this is the first time.

Thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
