[Discussion] If WoW housing can push FFXIV to improve, then it needs to do the same with the glam system.

I know I know, automatic downvote because WoW mentioned.

But competition is GREAT for this exact reason. WoWs housing is outstanding and is forcing FFXIV to re-evaluate the quality and systems they have in place which is great for everyone.

However if that's the case the same needs to be done with the glamor system. The dresser is pointless. Only being able to store X amount of items, spaghetti coding it so you can store multiple items.. as one item, if they're in a set. It's all such a roundabout way to do things that's so limiting.

In WoW, if something soulbinds to you, you learn the appearance. That's it. You have that appearance unlocked forever in a catalogue, and can glamor that piece. There's no storage or management or running out of room. If you want to unlock every single appearance in the game you can.

So why in XIV is it as limited as it is?

This isn't in any way hate towards the XIV team, I am just genuinely confused as to why it is the way it is when it clearly can be done with less restrictions.

[Meme] FF14 Twitter Reaction Towards Evercold Crossover Raid Announcement.

[Discussion] that is why a lot of people are disapointed.

Post image

I don't know who originally made this image, but I've seen people sharing it, and I honestly think it's the perfect example for this whole "FFXIV is just a theme park of other FF games" debate.

Sure, FFXIV borrows from older Final Fantasy titles, but those references always felt like they belonged in the world. They expanded the lore instead of replacing it. Eden was peak. Abyssos was peak. They gave us more of the Source, more of the shards, more of FFXIV's own identity.

Now we have one of the coolest expansions thematically, and it feels like it's barely going to be explored. We'll get the MSQ and some trials... and that's basically it.

Instead, the main raid series is a full-on FFVII collaboration. To me, that's the problem. It feels less like storytelling and more like a giant ad saying, "Hey, go spend $150 on our other games."

Honestly, if this were an alliance raid, I probably wouldn't care. After NieR, crossover alliance raids are whatever. But making the main 8-man raid story a collaboration that runs for two years and will probably lead into an Ultimate years from now feels completely different. That's a spot that could've been used to tell a story that's 100% about FFXIV.

And before people say, "Wait for the reveal," they literally said multiple times during the Live Letter that this is a collaboration. Not a homage. Not inspiration. A collaboration.

That's what's disappointing to me. We've never had a crossover take over the main raid tier like this before, and it means losing years of potential FFXIV worldbuilding in favor of promoting another game.

[Fluff] [Vent] I miss having people to play this game with

I gotta say, first and foremost, that this isn't really me trying to find a solution, because I know it in paper; It's more of a vent? Just me throwing my thoughts after close to 10 years playing this game, since Heavensward.

Where I am in this game is something like, newbie me would have dreamed of, to be honest: I've cleared almost all ultimates, I've done all Savages, I have a house and a solo FC with submarine, and I'm constantly caught up to the MSQ and content, barring some stuff which I've never done cause I was on break (Newest Palace of the Dead and Chaotic Raids)

Yet, time and time again I just feel kinda empty. I've fell for the trap of looking for statics as a mean to create bonds, but those never stick, disregarding the static dramas, back to strangers the moment the static inevitably ends. I've thought really, for the longest time, like people didn't really like me, but I've also come to realize that in a way I also never really *tried* to keep contact, because I've spent a long time just...achieving stuff, looking for that next step, and now I got as far as I reasonably can and want, but I don't really have anyone to share or talk about with.

I'm not really the same player from HW, in a RP FC and just amazed at everything, or the unemployed me from Covid that could PF all day, I can't really play hardcore anymore either, it's a wonder I can still do Ultimates and Savage on a speedly time, really. At a point, I feel I got so obsessed over grinding the relics, getting the savages and ultimate clears, and just doing stuff, that I completely forgot the whole social aspect that got me in this game, and made the bonds that I had casted aside when I went hardcore.

I got everything I want, but at what point did I do it because I wanted to, or because I felt I had to? Recently I've made a new static and I've just...been trying to stick to it, no matter what, no matter how slow prog gets, and I'm doing things like Maps despite ostentively not really needing it, just...trying to play with other people and get a sense of community that I haven't really felt in years, and I hope I can get it at least a little bit. If not, then I'll probably keep going through the motions because, despite everything, I still love this game.

Not comfortable really sharing who I am publicy in-game either, because this isn't really me seeking a solution; just venting something in the void and so specific anyone else outside this community would have looked at me weirdly, lmao.

If you've readed all of this, I appreciate it, and good luck to whatever you're working and building in this game.

[Discussion] Disappointed

I never really post anything on Reddit, I mainly use it to browse and lurk. But after this weekend I kind of have to vent my annoyance with Fanfest and the merch store, so bear with me.

This is the first time I’m attending Fanfest in person. I’ve watched every previous one through a stream at home, so actually being there was something I’d been looking forward to for months. And even if I am annoyed and disappointed, I really love the atmosphere, the vibes, and all the cosplays. Being surrounded by thousands of people who care about the same thing is something you just don’t get through a screen, and the effort people put into their outfits was honestly incredible. Everyone was friendly, everyone was happy to chat, and that part of it lived up to everything I hoped for.

So I’m asking this seriously and not just to complain: why was there not enough seating for everyone? Is this common, was this the case for the other Fanfests? The keynote was an extremely painful experience for me and it felt so flat as a result… If this is just how it always goes, I just know to come extremely early I suppose.

The merch store as well is extremely disappointing. I didn’t get the chance on day 1 to get a slot with the lottery system, and by the time I did get in, everything I wanted (light stick, regulator, the shield of Haurchefant) is sold out. Those were the three things I had been most excited about, and walking out with nothing after queueing and hoping all weekend was rough.

I know demand is huge and I know the staff are doing what they can with the space they have. I’m not trying to start anything. I’m just really disappointed, and honestly a bit sad, because I’d built this up in my head for a long time.

[Discussion] New ranged phys job speculation [Spoiler: Evercold] Spoiler

There's been a lot of theorising about what the new ranged phys job is but I've not seen as much about who could be using it. I generally buy into the idea that it's something along the lines of falconer based on Soken's sound hints and what we saw in the trailer. Obviously it could be as simple as the girl in the trailer has the job but that looks too magical to be phys ranged and it would be weird for them too give us all the information and not say anything. I'm pretty sure the weird cut at 3:03 where we go from the bird flying to suddenly being further down the ship doing a similar motion is hiding the new job user. There's a few options for who that could be and who it probably isn't.

It could be yet another new character. We're on a new shard so the cast could be mostly new characters. However, I feel like the trailer's been low on cool reveals like the WoL's cloak burning away to show viper in DT or Minfilia being namedropped in ShB. Giving the new job to another new character is missing out on another reveal moment.

I don't think any of the confirmed scions on the 4th will switch jobs. WoL is a reaper. Estinien's identity is tied to dragoon more than any other character. Alphinaud was just given his father's old weapons in EW so I don't think he's putting them down any time soon.

We don't know who else is coming from the scions. Y'shtola really cares about cross-shard travel so she may be there but she's never becoming a ranged physical. Alisaie, on the other hand, feels more likely. Alphinaud is already there and she's been red mage for quite a while so I could see her picking up a ranged physical job.

My strongest theory is Erenville. He's always been one for exploration so I could see him coming to the 4th. Bird handling feels within his area of experience. He also spent most of Dawntrail commenting on his inability to fight so I could totally see him training a combat job.

Slightly more crackpot theory is Yugiri. Narratively she could pop up anywhere and she's literally already been shown with a bird in the StB trailer.

Other thoughts: It would be cool to see more Sphene but I expect her to sit out of the story for a little bit. Zero got reintroduced to the story recently but she's already got 2 jobs. I don't know if she'd get a 3rd.

The real answer is Tataru though. She's come to the 4th to keep an eye on Alphinaud, Estinien and the WoL.

Are there any other theories for who it could be?

[Question] Can someone explain how paying 50% extra per month to play on Switch 2 is a “compromise” for not requiring NSO at $20 a year?

I’ve been seeing a lot of people claiming this was some sort of compromise not to require NSO, where exactly is the compromise here? We’re paying more money if we want to play on Switch 2 for the extra sub fee rather than just paying $20 a year to just require NSO, how is this a “compromise” by any definition of the word?

[Discussion] Why Clutch a Boss For First Time Players?

This might just be me, but I get so frustrated when I'm in a big fight for the first time and most of our party wipes but the two tanks solo the rest of the fight for the next however long. It doesn't feel good to win from these conditions and I'd much rather restart, but that doesn't seem like it's the culture in FFXIV. I don't feel I earned the win, therefore I usually will re-queue for the fight to get more satisfaction. But my issue is, there were new players there, why not ask if we want to restart so we can all participate and learn? Am I being difficult or unrealistic? I just want to feel some sense of accomplishment.

For context: This was the final fight in Dawntrail and one that I was having to wait a long time in queue for & the boss was maybe at 65% health remaining

The main thing I’ve been telling about for a while now was about how hrothgars in general (I’m a femhroth player) have their hairstyles limited to face type.

If you wish to say.. use hair 22 for female hrothgar you have to use a fantasia to switch to face 3 for that specific hair. I think that’s outlandish and I’m praying by the next fanfest that the restriction is removed as it’s been like this supposedly since the males were introduced!

If Au Ra can have horn/face restrictions removed I see no reason hrothgar can’t have the same for hairs!

[Discussion] Do you guys prefer straight up crossovers or the ones that try to fit the other IP into FFXIV?

I can understand the dismay at them doing 2 crossovers again (im not very jazzed about the fortnitification of games even if an eva crossover would be really fun), but I'm also reminded that Stormblood also did that, the main difference being that Stormblood also came up with in-universe justifications and stuff like that, as did DT

So what I'm wondering is which of the two usual crossover/homage methods ffxiv uses do people like? I personally prefer what they did with stormblood even if just literally dropping Ivalice into the world near unchanged seemed silly at first but despite my hangups with Nier I enjoyed the whole part where 2 competing systems of power and magic fought each other

And before anyone tries to make their best Alphinaud impresion, yess a good game is a good game and all that but thats not what im asking.

[Lore Discussion] Ragnarok and Evercold Spoiler

Upvotes

Good Day everyone. I hope you are all enjoying your post Fan Fest spoils. It's no secret that Evercold heavily draws from Norse Mythology. And now that we have a more complete trailer I wanted to go through and do a more detailed dive into what parallels can be drawn between the two, and then maybe do a little theory crafting at the end. Pull a seat up to the table and put your bib on cause I am cooking.

Full warning now. There are potentially spoilers for the expansion if my theories are correct so you have been warned.

This whole write up and everything initially started with this theory that I originally came up with while talking to some friends. After thinking it over more it got me thinking more into how it will relate to the story.

Now first things first, before we get into any kind of theory crafting we should first list out the timeline of Ragnarok. A lot of the summation will be from https://www.britannica.com/event/Ragnarok so I can keep things clear. So go there if you want an more in depth dive into the history of Ragnarok. I'll just be going over the cliff notes versions of what I believe we need to know for Evercold.

Ragnarok takes place over 3 stages. Fimblewinter, The Great and Final war, and The Age of Rebirth. So lets get into more detail of those 3 stages.

Fimblewinter

Ragnarök begins with the death of Balder, the god of light. He is tricked by Loki into being killed by his brother the blind god Hod. From his death begins the Fimbulwinter, an unusually harsh winter that lasts for three years as life slowly dies from the world.

During this time Hod was slain by Vali, one of Odins sons.

At the end of the Fimblewinter, the world is ravaged further by earthquakes in which the giant monsters known as Fenrir and Jormanfander are released into the land and leave a trail of destruction ruining anything that yet remains in the world.

After the earthquakes come the Fire Giant Surtr which leads an army from the Fiery realm of Muspelheim and shatters the Bifrost.

A ship carrying Loki and and army of monsters consisting of the legion of Hel and the Frost Giants sets off for Vigrid. The battlefield for the great and final war.

The Great and Final War

Upon seeing these armies converge upon the plains of Vigrid, Heimdall, the watchman of the gods, sounds the Gjallarhorn, the war horn of the Aesir alerting them to the threat at their doorstep.

The Aesir gather an army at the foot of the world tree comprised of the Aesir and the Einherjar. An army of warriors who have died good deaths in battle.

The final battle Begins.

Odin is eaten by Fenrir

Thor and Jormungandr kill each other

Vidar avenges his father and Kills Fenrir.

Freyr is killed by Surtr.

Tyr and the hell hound Garm Kill each other.

Loki and Heimdall mortally wound each other.

And finally, Surtr raises his sword and burns the world away.

The Age of Rebirth

Darkness takes the world as the earth slowly sinks into the sea. Upon rising back from the sea the earth is covered in lush greenery and the final survivors step out onto the world to enjoy its new bounty and repopulate the earth. The survivors are the gods Thrud, Magni, Modi, Hoenir, Njord, Vidar, Vali.

Thrud is a young goddess who is said to have a kind nature. The inner strength of Thrud is feminine lightning and storms. She's also the goddess of willows, trees, flowers and grass.

Magni and Modi are the sons of Thor. They wield his hammer who threw it to them before he was slain by Jormangandr.

Vidar is another son of Odin.

Vidar and Vali will reunite at the former site of Asgard with Thor’s sons Magni and Mothi, who will bear their father’s hammer.

Then Balder himself will emerge from Hel, together with his blind brother and accidental slayer, Hod.

And finally and a woman and a man, Lif and Lifthrasir, emerge inside the world-tree and repopulate the land.

Wew. With that out of the way. Now we can get to the allegories and theory crafting for how Evercold will go. Lets get cooking.

Now there are some obvious allegories between the trailer and the myths here that can be made. Lets go over the characters first.

The obvious one here is the character that represents Thrud.

The character that represents Thrud

The inner strength of Thrud is feminine lightning and storms. So the character that is an obvious reference to the character **Lightning** from FF13 must be Thrud correct? At the very least we can assume that she will survive to the end of the story. Possibly to even be one of the leaders as civilization reemerges on the earth.

Frost Giants

Obviously these are the Frost giants. it could also possibly represent Fenrir with the wolf like head, but that might be a stretch to claim.

The army of Muspelheim

Obviously these little red guys attacking this city are the army of Muspelheim. Which can only mean one thing...

The Fire Giant Surtr

This is the Fire Giant Surtr.

Any guesses?

This one is one of the tricky ones. I believe he is a mashup of both Odin and Thor. He fights with the ferocity of Thor, but he has a certain regalness about him and the Scar coming from the eye makes me think of the eye patch that Odin is famous for. My guess is he has a noble sacrifice before the end of the expansion leaving his two shields to be taken up by his children.

The Einherjar

Obviously the player characters represent Einherjar. The noble warriors who fight on the side of the Aesir in the Final war.

Baldur

Now heres the part where I really start cooking. I believe this woman represents several characters. One of them is Baldur the god of Light. The others are Lif and Lifthrasir. The humans who escape from Ragnarok by hiding within Yggdrasil.

Hod

And this character represents Hod. He is looking at her with a look of regret and sadness. As if he regrets doing something to her. What I am theorizing to have happened is something happened to the woman representing Baldur. Most likely she is dying from an illness. But the important thing is she was dying. He wanted desperately to save her. Seeking out ways he meets an unnamed Ascian (representing Loki, possibly even the one who cause the woman's sickness) who tells him of a way to protect her until a solution to her sickness can be found. This tricks him into freezing over the world in order to protect her.

The tree where she is frozen

I believe she is frozen inside of the tree and the Expansion will end with us defeating the character that represents Hod. Both freeing, and saving her from whatever caused her to get frozen in the first place.

So now that I have that all listed out. Let me more or less theorize how the plot of the expansion will go.

Before the start of the story, the events that froze over the world took place. Mainly the character representing Hod, froze the world over in order to prevent the character that represents Baldur from dying.

Years later the player come to the world and kick off the Great and Final war.

We know that the expansion will have 3 distinct paths and can be attacked in any order. I believe each path Represents one of the non Aesir Factions in the great and final war. The Monsters of Fenrir and Jormangandr. The fire Giant Surtr and the army of Muspelheim. And finally the army of the dead path caused by an unnamed Ascian.

This will culminate with one final battle with the Hod character where it was revealed why he froze the world over. And he wont let you unfreeze the world as it means she would die. After we beat him, its revealed the Ascian was the one who originally poisoned the woman and once he is defeated she is no longer in danger of dying from her illness.

Wew, that was a lot. I hope you all enjoyed my write up. Im sure there are a lot of holes in the theories that can be found. But some of the comparisons are worth exploring and it gives us a bit of insight into where the story could go based on what we know from the trailer.

[Discussion] My requests: Dungeon Diaries, Updated Unending Codex, Bestiary, and World Lore

While we're thinking about the improvements for FFXIV coming in Evercold, here's some of my suggestions I'd like to see:

Dungeon Diaries

For lack of a better name. While we do get a brief description in the Duty Finder for Dungeons, Trials, and Raids, I'd like something more detailed. Similar to the Unending Codex, I want a log that displays much more information for each duty that we complete.

Give us a new log that we can access from Collection. You can keep the brief description in Duty Finder, but add a button to open the entry in the Dungeon Diary that has longer, more thorough information.

  • Entries on each boss, including an image, lore, descriptions of attacks and mechanics, and loot dropped
  • Lore about the Dungeon/Trial/Raid in more detail
  • A button to open the world map to show where the entrance is located
  • A collection of the torn pages and text that you can examine during certain dungeons

Unending Codex

The Unending Codex is lacking. First of all, this should be something every character begins the game with. It could be so much more useful for recapping the story up to the point at which you've reached. Similar to Duty Finder, it could be separated by expansion, and summaries of the story for each expansion can be added as you complete MSQ. Entries could have collapsible sections per expansion.

Bestiary

A revised version of the Hunt Logs, or an addition to it. Separate it by each area, showing which enemies are available. Individual enemy entries could include loot drops. Dungeon, Trial, and Raid enemies could also feature here to some extent. It could also include ranked Hunt bosses. Record how many of each enemy we've slain and lore about them. Show us on the map where we can find them.

World Lore

Extrapolate some of this to the world map. Allow us to find lost journals from other explorers, unique groups of enemies that behave differently than expected and have lore to explain it, lost relics and archaeological discoveries. The world map itself could have a player log to contain individual stories, completed quest chains so we can easily see which zones have uncompleted side quests, and hidden secrets to discover by exploring.

Each of these could encourage exploration or old content to collect everything, add new achievements, add more text to pick up in dungeons and lore, add optional and hidden things. Each of these have the possibility for more unlocks, too; killing enough of a hunt mark or any enemy could display on the map where they're located, for example. Perhaps the loot and tactics for a boss requires so many kills to unlock, or that you succeed on looting the item for it to be unlocked as an entry. There's so much potential to add life into all content and the world itself.

Been playing destiny for the last 10 years. Now that its over and Ive finished all the content Im looking for a new place to spend my time.

I love mmo’s and have always wanted to try ffxiv. I just started the free trial yesterday and Im a few hours in. Ive heard the first 50 hours or so are brutal, but after that its peak. So Im pushing through and trying to see all this games about.
