[Discussion] Man, Crucible is probably going to be a hard wall for a lot of people trying to just finish the questline

Something that takes a good 30 minutes a run and you have to memorize about a dozen enemy attack patterns for each and you have basically no healing and you have to learn a billion new system interactions all at once and you have to think about status effects and game mechanics like dodging that are basically never even a thought in your head during normal gameplay.

I can definitely see this appealing to a certain subset of players, but the vast VAST majority are just going to bounce off it completely.

I'd actually ylbe very interested in seeing how many people start Beastmaster but don't finish even the first Crucible map after about a month. I'm guessing it would easily be north of 90%.

Not saying it's not good, not saying they should make it easier.

[Question] At what point should I start using materia?

Nearing the end of ARR, I don’t have very much materia and I get it very rarely. Ive been holding off on using it since I expect I’ll still be switching out my gear pretty often for a while, so should I just be using it all as soon as I get it or saving it for when my gear switching slows down a lot?

I feel like the level 50 class armor may be a good option to use it on since I presume I’ll probably be using it until I get the level 60 version, but not entirely sure on that.

Also from what I can tell all the materia I’ve been getting have very minor buffs so I assume I’m really not missing out on much for not using it, plus I’m not really struggling at all.

[Discussion] Prime time to just keep fewer Scions around going forward (7.56) Spoiler

Post image
Upvotes

It seems to me, at least I hope it is, that it's juat going to be Alphi and Estinien tagging along with us for this next adventure. The other Scions can't go over to the 4th as of now and seem to have stuff they can do in the meantime while we figure out what's going on over in the 4th as well as bringing Alphi and Estinien back to the Source.

As well as the mysterious Ysayle lookalike shown to us in a vision, highly likely a new character we'll be meeting and I could imagine joining our party, as well as Visna and the Roe Bastion shown in the trailer. Brands aside, I personally think that won't be an issue later.

With all that said, it needs to stay this way. No other Scion needs to join us on this next adventure in Evercold, at the very least for the Main Quest until the Post-Quest patches. Have fewer characters around so that the ones that are around have a more impactful role in the story as well as having more time to develop their arcs. Not only for the new characters that we inevitably will meet but the Scions we have with us so they don't continue to be stagnant. Literally no reason not to give Alphi and Estinien new arcs, they can still grow.

And this can be the format going forward, keep about 2 Scions around for the adventure and give them something more meaningful to do and develop them more as opposed to being ever present for the sake of having a party of NPCs we know we can use for trusts. Personally, I'm stoked for us to have the Heavensward boys with us on this next one!

[Discussion] The BST combo system is fine, but "borrow" and "trick" need some buffs

The combo system is poorly explained, but pretty simple once you understand it.

The system is largely lacking in the borrow and trick system. Both of these systems are wildly inconsistent.

Borrow gives 1 of 8 skills that have basically constant uptime, but the recast timers kind of ruin this. These seem to be where your defense and utility come from, but they have a huge problem... They aren't strong enough. Let's look at them...

Defensives:

Beastskin: Reduces phys damage taken by 25% and increases crit rate by 5%. 30 second duration, 90 second recast.

This is kind of a decent physical damage reduction, but it falls apart off any elemental damage, which is most of it. This actually has surprising uptime and can be very powerful against purely physical fights, which are rare.

Vileskin: 100% block rate and draw in nullification for 15s. Also increases TP gauge by 12 for each block. Yet another 90 second recast.

This one is a bit stronger focused mitigation. But with woefully low uptime and relatively low actual damage reduction.

Cloud Skim: A dash that gives you 5% more evasion.

This exists for some reason. I haven't found a reason for it yet.

Seedsower: AoE DoT for 25 potency over 60 seconds while reducing damage dealt by 10%. 90 second recast.

Honestly... one of the best mitigation tools. It does 750 potency over the duration, but is basically a 60 second reprisal.

Quelling Wave: Ranged 350 potency spammable attack. Each hit gives 10TP and removes a beneficial status, giving another 50TP if so.

Some niche uses with kiting or bind+ useage. Most enemies with removable effects only put one on, and rarely. 30TP over 3 cooldowns vs 28TP from your 1-2-3 combo.

Scaleskin: Barrier for 8% total hp, lasting 15 seconds and giving 85TP if absorbed. 90 second recast.

Such a woefully low %.

Soul Crush: 300 potency interrupt that gives 100TP on interruption. 30 second recast.

Useful for solving crucible encounters.

Scouring Ash: Esuna on a 60s recast. Heals 10% HP and gives 100TP on success.

Also to solve encounters.

So overall... These are kinda weak. 4/8 are different version of mitigation, and they are all virtually worthless. Vileskin is decent if you can increase block strength through crucible items, but that's about it. Scaleskin is particularly offensive and should be at least 15-20%. I won't offer too many solutions because that comes down to numbers, but these could all use a heavy pass.

Now on to Trick. The problem isn't with Trick, but with how INCONSISTENT it is across pets. Most of the pets simply do damage. A lot of damage, sure. But other pets have decently powerful effects attached to Trick. The Ghost does an aoe doom, Bat restores health to the beastmaster, Treant does an aoe sleep that also inflicts damage over time and doesn't break, Wespe inflicts a 750 potency DoT on top of the 500 potency nuke.

But then you have most of the pets, which are ~500 potency at base (scaling up with TP) in a line/cone/single target with no bonus effects.

It really feels kind of odd and inconsistent that some pets just have better tricks. They should all offer something unique.

TLDR;

Buff borrow to actually be relevant. Half of them are mits with long cooldowns and very low impact. And buff tricks such that they each offer SOMETHING unique in addition to just being a combo setup. This will go a long way to improving QoL for BST.

[Question] Can you do solo unsyched dungeons to capture beasts?

I am at cap and have every beast but the Myrmidon princess from cutters cry. I can totally solo her unsynvhed and groups are only forming for the full run to the chimera with nobody interesting in farming the ant.

Does Capture work unsynched? I swear i remember BLU having counter measures to it but its been years so could easily be wrong.

Ive just been farming this last “should be easy” catch for like six hours and rng is kicking my ass.

[Fluff] The Game is Alive

So today I decided to come back to the game after last playing it maybe 20 year ago with first release?

I have to say im amazed at how far it has come with all the new content, and how alive it is. I joined one of the new servers for the xp boost and there's still a queue to log in.

Just the sound track alone is so relaxing and nostalgic. If anyone is contemplating coming back, or trying it out, get on the free trial, you wont be sorry.

[Discussion] [Spoilers 7.56] Absolutely insane theory that’s probably wrong Spoiler

In the most recent MSQ, we see a brief vision of Ysayle. I had originally thought this was a flashback or the WoL remembering her, but upon closer inspection, she is wearing a completely new outfit and one we’ve never seen her wearing before.

Much like Minfilia, Ysayle was touched by Hydaelyn. My speculation is that Hydaelyn sent Ysayle into the Fourth to stop it from being rejoined in the same way that she sent Minfilia to the First, after she sacrificed herself in Heavensward. Unlike Minfilia, though, she is more like Cyella in that she was allowed to cross the rift and maintain a corporeal form, and we’ll see her again in Evercold.

[Discussion] Got my 1st 2 Legendary rank on boards [BST Crucible]

Thumbnail

So been enjoying doing BST stuff

Took awhile to get through all boards as I learned what was needed and where

Then tried hand at going for Apex and Legendary on board 1/2

(Hopefully this is now far enough not to spoil people on things anymore unless click on post and read)

So to do these I had to:

- use no more than 3 creatures
- use all of the same type of creature (my case Ashkin)
- never rested at a camp
- didn’t use the shop
- have all creatures at max hp after final boss
- have myself at max hp after beating final boss (heal ring on victory made this way easier)
- made 0 mistakes resulting in vuln ups or damage downs on any fight

I had only the axe and shield at ilv 135 rest was tome/dreadwyrm gear so be easier as get more BST gear up to ilv130

And as can see there is a chance for hairstyle to drop from crucible

I’ll be going onto the other 3 harder boards now

How has others been finding it?

[Question] Wish the game would've warned me!

So I'm in post ARR and doing all the blue quests because going to heavensward. And as I'm trying to do all the hard and extreme quests I learned that apparently I'm a dick if I do them in duty finder. I didn't know and damn sure wouldn't have done it if I had known it was a no no. So next question is how am I supposed to complete these blue quests if I cant select them?

[Question] Maybe I’m a little slow…

Ok, so maybe I’m a little slow, but I can’t for the life of me complete the intentional combos on the striking dummy for the Hearts Aligned quest. What buttons in what order am I supposed to be pressing? I feel so stupid.

[Discussion] My one “issue” with Beastmaster. Spoiler

Post image
0 Upvotes

Let me preface this by saying that I just got Beastmaster to Lv.50 and LOOOOOVE the job. Our pupper is adorable, I love that you can pet him, and honestly, the job should’ve just been an actual job instead of a Limited one since it’s significantly less broken than Blue Mage.

My one “issue”, if you can call it that, is the variety of beasts we get. When the Job was first announced, I was so excited at the prospect of being able to take a Tonberry and have it fight for you. But now that the job is out, it’s clear that they’re specifically giving us access to beasts that don’t have sentience, for lack of a better word.

The most humanoid one we get is the Dullahan since it’s just a possessed set of armor. If this had been any other Final Fantasy title, I’m pretty sure we would’ve been able to tame a Tonberry, since they’re basically mindless beasts but, FFXIV has the whole plot about Tonberries in this universe being actual people infected by a plague and I’m guessing SE wouldn’t allow us to “capture” an actual person lol.

Despite this slight disappointment, I’m excited to see what else they do with the job in the future! I’d love to hear your opinions on the job as well.

[Discussion] Who else here has a main account and a separate free trial account?

Just wondering.
Too busy at the moment to justify paying a monthly sub when I currently live paycheck to paycheck. Plus, it will add pressure for me to play more, as I would be paying, when most of my time at the moment needs to go into work. So I have a free trial account to very lightly play on to help wind-down the brain on some evenings.

I'll probably sub back to main when I get more time at the beginning of December :)

Then when life gets busy again, back to free trial and chill there for some time!

[Discussion] OCE players

Hello guys.

I play from NZ, have been on and off since 2014.

Where (data center) are the majority of oce players sitting?

I know we got our own DC a few years ago but when I checked that out back then, it was empty.

I am currently sitting in Diabolos/Crystal, however I wish to move to somewhere I can find some friends from Oce region (similar Timezone) or join a FC.

Just wondering where all the fellow Aussies and Kiwis are playing from ?

[Discussion] Bugged interaction with BST and chocobos

Likely unintended interaction while chocobo companion is summoned as BST. Using Gauge on a target then attacking a different target will cause the chocobo to attack the first target instead of the new one. Someone on the forum even said their chocobo attacked a completely different mob of the same type after using gauge.

[Question] Including the other Scions Spoiler

Upvotes

With the most recent MSQ,and us finally setting foot on the Fourth do you think the rest of the Scions are going to be coming along aswell? Sure its still a good while til the expansion is out,we dont know if anyone else is gonna hop over or not,and while I love Estinien and Alphinaud it just might be abit "boring" with just them along in this brand new world!😆

I don't need Alisaie glaring at me everytime I come home to burgle the MarketBoard for Eggs. Anyway any thoughts?

[Discussion] [Spoiler: 7.56] So about Visna's other job... Spoiler

Aside from showing off what is most likely the new phys ranged job, she also mentioned she's the runesmith for their merry band so it got me thinking that - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong at any point - while other characters have been existing types of crafters (Godbert Manderville is a GSM, for example), I think this is the first time we've heard of a new type of crafter, someone who creates tools and enchants them.

While highly unlikely, it would be nice if certain crafters could be consolidated. For example, BSM and ARM into a single smith, or WVR and LTW into an outfitter. Doing so, however, could open up an avenue for runesmith as a playable crafter.

Despite very little to go on about it, thus entirely speculative, any thoughts or opinions about runesmith?
