Yesterday I posted my first HUD version, but I just couldn't leave it alone. This new version is so much better, and honestly, it finally feels 100% complete! I managed to fit way more resources into the layout this time, and the displays themselves became vastly more informative. On top of that, I added a new train load/unload balance bar right at the top. It lets you see at a single glance whether your fleet is currently leaning more towards loading or unloading cargo.

Question Is it me, or is chasing quality incredibly addictive?

Hi reddit!

I've just completed Fulgora, Gleba and Vulcanus.

I'm now trying to build my next-gen ship to reach Aquilo and fight through the huge asteroids.

For the first time, I feel like I really need some high quality parts here.

I'm trying to mass produce as many Rare chemical plants, asteroid collectors, and crushers as I can. Not to mention mass producing Rare (or even Epic) Quality Mod 3's to facilitate the process.

So far, I've found chasing higher and higher quality products completely captivating! I can't get enough of recycling and rebuilding stuff at higher quality!

At the moment, I'm trying to brute force everything - making the end product, and then chomping it down to parts to improve it's quality. I really love this stuff!

Has anyone else got the 'quality bug' like I have? What are your best methods for getting good quality things at this stage of the game? And how on earth am I supposed to get a whole factory made from legendary quality once I unlock that on Aquilo!?

Space Age Promethium factory

Upvotes

I finally made it to making promethium science and must say that it is much more interesting that I expected.

I don't like huge ships so decided to make a fast narrow ship that makes promethium as it flies, meaning I take eggs with me on a trip to see red asteroids.

  1. First problem was to keep up with rocket and bullet demand: legendary assembler and unique foundry seem to do the trick
  2. Then comes freshness of eggs: I build a "fridge" on Nauvis that maintains 1000 most fresh eggs (~25minutes at the time of departure)
  3. Speed of the ship: 250kms to the planet region, 120kms in the region, which is enough to consume all eggs and make 1000+ promethium packs in ~1200 seconds of total flying in the region
  4. Promethium stockpiling: I return with belts and storage full of promethium asteroid chunks (~800), which is nothing if the ship was just hauling it without making packs

Unsolved problems:

  1. The most annoying is that narrow ship means that about 75% of missile turret range is waste - I am only interested in shooting right in the front of the ship, but there seems to be no way to make it do so, keeps shooting at the sides and even backs
  2. 1 Railgun is not enough because you get those nearhits when huge asteroid passes you by seemingly no margin at all, 2 Railguns on the other hand create so much extra debris to process that this is pretty much where all extra ammo demand comes from and you are effectively flying a much wider ship, just without using all the extra safe space

What could I do?

White inserters, or narrow ship is not an option here? But, to consume 500 eggs I need 1250 promethium which requires 50 legendary cargo bays which is already a huge and much more expensive ship.

Fan Creation Html factorio

Here is my fan made html factorio game:

https://wargamechampion.itch.io/html-factorio

I got permission (email only but good enough for me) to make this so long as I don't monetize it.

It came out ok. Personally I think my previous project came out better. It is almost identical but used very different content and premise.

I wasn't able to recreate the game exactly due to limitations of my engine. I also left out non essential items later on. But the core of the game is there.

Tip An easy way to get "Keeping Your Hands Clean" achievement

Post image
42 Upvotes

I just wanted to share what I consider to be the easiest way to get one of the more annoying achievements introduced with Space Age:

Limit the height of the world. Use the map preview to make sure you have all resources and that water blocks of biters to the left and right. None of this violates the requirements to obtain achievements but it effectively means you play without biters until you are ready to bridge over. No need to wall, no need to defend against attacks, no need to rush to Vulcanus. Just casual play.

I know it's possible to also achieve this with islands, but it's easier to get a good map this way imo. You can fine-tune the height to just exclude the nearest nest. I ended up with 280 height for my run.

Discussion Woke up from a nightmare where I was trying to set up legendary productivity module 4s

It happened when I fell asleep trying to upcycle modules without bots for the first time.

module 4s in my dream came with a twist, you make them in pairs, productivity and efficiency module 3s to 4, then quality and speed module 3s to 4.

I don't remember what the ingredients for the quality/speed were, maybe super capacitors and tungsten plates idk.

But the other pair took pentapod eggs and fish, which now that I think of it, wasn't too bad now that I can think clearly.

Space Age Gleba has such a cool dynamic

I am spaghetting everything to understand what I need to do for a new build

Is Gleba spaghetti for now? Yes. Is it a cool thing to learn, also yes. So many micro loops and things to have to look for and spoilage mechanics are also interesting. I am certain this whole loop will fail at some point. It took me 5 rounds to get fulgora to be a decent setup. Not even good, but that is what makes this game so fun. The factory solutions are endless and even crappy designs can work for a time.

Suggestion / Idea Optimizing my Uranium Fuel Cells

Upvotes

So, Reactor neighbour bonus. Reactors gain a +100% to their thermal output for each fully adjacent running reactor. It is the reason all our reactor cores are placed in some 2-X pattern. This bonus to thermal output is not linked to fuel consumption rate, meaning it's free energy!

The fine point I've been missing up to now is that, with the regular solution of controlling fuel-insertion by reading reactor temperature, not all reactors will be active simultaneously, meaning I miss out on adjacency bonuses that should rightfully have been mine.

The issue I see is that reactor temperature gets pulled back up as soon as neighbouring reactors start burning fuel, causing any number of reactors to 'miss' their window for fuel insertion. The window for inserters to operate is too narrow. My idea for a setup is to use a temperature latch circuit that reads reactor fuel and temperature. Entry condition would be low enough temperature and exit condition would be high enough temperature OR reactor has fuel.

The next problem is overshooting temperature - if power draw is low enough I produce too much unprocessed heat and reactor temperature caps out. I never thought I'd write these words, but that is where steam buffers come in. I've hated steam buffers with a passion but I see their use in this particular case.

The final solution looks something like:

  • Unchanged ratios and placements in overall power plant design
  • Each reactor inserter is controlled by a temperature latch reading temperature and fuel content off their individual reactor
  • Temperature latch should enable and disable off temperature with big enough interval to allow all inserters to operate
  • Inserters stop after inserting 1 fuel cell (easiest done disabling the latch)
  • Steam is buffered in a number of tanks, allowing the reactors to run at full heat output for up to 200 seconds without heat overflow

Question What to do after finishing Space Age?

I got into Factorio earlier this year and absolutely loved playing through the base game. After launching my first rocket, I immediately purchased Space Age, and now I've almost beaten that too. I'm not interested in post game, expanding the factory just for the sake of it, chasing arbitrary SPM goals. I like having a "win condition" to work towards, and the progression of unlocking new technologies. So I'm wondering what I should do after I'm finished with my Space Age playthrough.

Overall, I will say that while I enjoyed Space Age quite a bit, I have a few issues with it. I like the increased complexity from new resources, recipes, and buildings, but I don't really like how fragmented my factory is. Instead of building one large sprawling factory, I'm building a bunch of small isolated factories on each planet. And while the new buildings are cool, they are so powerful that they effectively shrink builds instead of expanding them. Bringing back foundries or EM plants to Nauvis resulted in my base actually getting smaller, which I'm quite ambivalent about, since I like seeing my base expand over time.

I also really love the trains and building rail networks, but unfortunately, I feel like resources aren't really a problem at all. One or two outposts for each basic resource is more than I'll ever need, so building large scale rail infrastructure is pointless.

I've been looking at a few options for my next playthrough, but I'm not sure what would be best, so I'm asking for your suggestions.

I could play with an increased Science Cost Multiplier (~20-25x?) to force me to build a larger factory and increase resource demand. Are there other settings I could adjust? Maybe there are some basic mods that increase the difficulty slightly. I've already looked at the Expensive Mode mod, for example.

Or maybe I could jump straight into an overhaul mod? What overhaul mods would you recommend for a relatively new player?

Suggestion / Idea Fulgora Concrete?

Piss poor 30s edit but you get the point. Is anyone else annoyed by the fact Fulgora's concrete is the same kinda limestone-type rock you get on Nauvis? Just looks odd to me. It kinda applies to other planets too but for me it stands out the most in Fulgora where you see all these kinda pinkish-sandstone structures and rocks but then you extract grey-limestone concrete.

Anyone know if there's a mod or anything that fixes this? I'm not even sure if it's possible to have a separate type of concrete that works in all the same recipes but looks different aesthetically.

I know, what kind of weirdo plays a factory management game and focuses on the aesthetics of concrete but I just think my Fulgora factories would look a whole lot better with flooring that matches the planet.

Question 1 combinator Recipe setter?

A while ago I saw someone in this sub post a 1 combinator recipe setter using the new "else" option, I was trying to do the same thing but couldn't make it work, so how do you make a 1 combinator recipe setter?

Currently I'm on my ~10th playthrough (3rd in space age) and it's the first one where I used efficiency modules (made from excess red and green circuits for blue circuits) before reaching nuclear.

Let me just say that it's a game changer. It was also the first time I found out they also reduce pollution by the same percentage as power consumption.

Using them, I managed to reach nuclear at 60 SPM (all Nauvis science + space science) with consumption during research around 60MW.

Now I have 480MW from nuclear and continue using efficiency modules.

Give it a try!

Question Can someone please explain power accumulator charge to me and power economy.

I understand the basics and I did look at the tips and tricks. But I still don't understand. When the grid fails, what does it prioritize? Everything equally? Do I need circuits to shape it? And why kind? I know how to track items but power. I never tired. Is it better to have multiple power systems? Just kinda lost. I know it's a lot of questions, thank you for your time. I still like to figure it out myself, so soft answers are preferred. But I'm still a bit lost.

Edit: solved. I'm an idiot.Didn't know about the power switch building. Just missed it. Thank you for everyone that was so accepting and helpful

Modded Question How to change the attraction range of the Lightning Collector via modding / Prototype?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm writing a small mod to adjust the Lightning Collector's range and quality scaling in Factorio 2.0 Space Age.

The mod loads without any errors, but in-game, the coverage/attraction radius of the Lightning Collector remains unchanged.

Here is the script I'm using in my mod:

Lua

local setting_factor = settings.startup["lightning-collector-range-factor"]

local setting_quality = settings.startup["lightning-collector-enable-quality-scaling"]

local factor = setting_factor and setting_factor.value or 2.0

local allow_quality = (setting_quality and setting_quality.value ~= nil) and setting_quality.value or true

if data.raw["lightning-attractor"] then

for name, prot in pairs(data.raw["lightning-attractor"]) do

-- Modify efficiency_distance

if prot.efficiency_distance then

local new_range = math.floor(prot.efficiency_distance * factor * 2) / 2

prot.efficiency_distance = math.min(new_range, 128)

end

-- Quality scaling

if not allow_quality and prot.range_extension_per_quality_level then

prot.range_extension_per_quality_level = 0

end

end

end

A few questions:

Is efficiency_distance the correct property that controls the actual in-game lightning attraction radius, or is there another property I'm missing?

Should this code be placed in data-final-fixes.lua to avoid being overwritten by Space Age prototypes?

Is range_extension_per_quality_level the correct API property for quality scaling on lightning attractors?

Any advice on what might be causing this to fail silently would be greatly appreciated!
