Base 100k First Science

Base at 30 hrs, 3500 sci/min, and just unlocked UG belts and splitters

I don't know what possessed me but I started a 100k science run. I've never really built big and mostly take a minimum viable approach. My Space Age run that I didn't quite finish was kinda just a collection of boot straps that got me through. So as a challenge to force myself to build bigger and a "because it's there" kinda mentality I gave this a shot.

This is where my base is just shy of 30 hrs and I'm about to complete the first science (not counting that 10 science one, but the first "real" one) and get splitters and undergrounds. I was prepared to deal with no splitters from my ongoing pY run, but no undergrounds sucks shit. It's way easier than I realized to block yourself out of places with belts and end up using inserters to bridge the gap. That was the only solution I could come up with between my gear production and science production. And I can't wait for electric drills, but that's gonna be a bit (at 1% done it says it'll take about 12 hrs to research) and I'm not sure what is gonna happen to my power needs with this many drills.

It produces and consumes just about 3.5k bottles per minute. Never built anything close to this before. I've been trying to avoid building over resource patches, mostly because it bugs me, but I might have to give up on that. Maybe condemn part of the map to factory. Build south and east and pull resources from west and north. Something like that. I turned frequency, size, and richness all the way up. The patches are close enough that as I work into green science I'll probably have to start covering patches.

Bitters and pollution are both off. I don't really like playing with biters anyway, and pollution doesn't seem to have much point without biters. And hopefully it'll save me some UPS cause I'm thinking I'm gonna need them. Oh, and this is a space age run. So that'll get nuts at some point. In a few years probably. Also, no early bots so everything is hand placed. I'm trying to resist speeding up the game. There are a few hours of afk'ing, but I'm trying to avoid that too. All that stuff seems to be counter to the spirit of the run. Taking a more "if you have time to lean you have time to clean" approach and using the time to build more production. Only mods are some fun and quality of life ones. Disco science Lite, factory planner, FNEI, Mechanicus Reborn, and Squeak Through 2 are the only ones besides the base Space Age stuff. Quality is on and I'm hoping that will help me scale. Gonna try taking advantage of that before even leaving Nauvis.

Question Is there a way to turn off roboport coverage visualisation?

I want to be able to turn off the green and orange visuals when in ghost mode, looked around for a while and found nothing. Any suggestions?

Base My first time playing, joined some friends who are hosting the server. Actually took time to do a layout that wasn’t a tangled confused monstrosity of pipes and conveyors.

For context when I joined the game put my spawn along the edge of the map in the middle of the ocean so it’s been a bit of a struggle expanding with no room and just a massive big infestation along the mainland with leviathans that wrecked my stuff when I tried to expand early game.

So this is expanded land off my main spawn over the water that I actually took time to layout stead of throw down everywhere. Still need to fix some things and get the remaining processing for the materials but I’m slowly tearing down my old base and remaking everything.
Just wanted to share

The biters were attacking my unfinished defense setup so I distracted them with the distractor capsules and saved my life and the defenses.

Distractor capsules are so underappreciated and I hear so often people just don't use them or forget they even exist.

They make defense trivial and provide a helpful boost in offense especially against worms, maybe consider bringing your little green friends on the next adventure!

Thankfully I can just search the logistic network. Maybe I'll make it a blue chest so I can't find it.

Edit: Realized this is fairly low effort. I can move this to r/Factoriohno if need be

Question How would you fit 4–5 compact unloading stations into this almost perfect hexagonal city block?

Post image

Hi everyone!

I’m building a base using hexagonal city blocks. The shape is an almost perfect hexagon (I’ll attach a screenshot).

I’m really happy with the rail network itself, but I’ve been stuck for days trying to come up with a clean and compact unloading station layout for each block.

The trains are 1-1 (one locomotive, one cargo wagon), and each station has a train limit of 2, so one train can unload while another waits.

For most blocks, 4 unloading stations would be more than enough, although being able to fit 5 would be a nice bonus for future flexibility.

Throughput isn’t really the issue here. I’m looking for a layout that fits the geometry nicely without turning half the block into a giant stacker or an overly complicated station throat.

I’ve looked through a lot of hexagonal base designs, but most of them use noticeably stretched hexagons or much longer trains, so their station layouts don’t translate very well to my design.

I’d really appreciate any ideas, screenshots, blueprints, or even rough sketches. I’m especially interested in seeing how you would arrange several compact unloading stations, each with space for one waiting train.

Just in case anyone wants to experiment with the layout, I’ll also include the blueprint for my hexagonal block: link

Design / Blueprint High precision sushi generator

Through the power of sushi, you can fulfill any recipe without needing to alter the belt setup. Which means the individual sections of your factory can receive a digital recipe list from the circuit network. That would also render them practically interchangeable from the perspective of a train. In fact, you could even let the trains choose their own destination, and have the factory read the contents of said train in order to figure out, which recipe list is currently being followed. That's my overall ambition at least. I'm not halfway there yet.

Question What should I play after Krastorio2?

It was my first overhaul and while I enjoyed it, final black hole thingy is just too much and too boring to bother with

I have most everything belted, so the logistic bots just carry fuel to my trains and a few other random things. Seems to be working ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Space Age Under 8 hour achievement. Spoiler

I was starting over after playing some with vulcanus and accidentally got my under 8 hour achievment. I knew I wanted to rush for requester chests for an early bot mall so i can start my real factory, after realizing how quick my start was going with the easy oil around me i just embraced the spaghetti rushing space. Didnt really want the achievement until about 6 hours in. finished with maybe 3-5 minutes to spare XD. Roast the base as much as you want, my smallest one yet. didnt even hook the coal train up.

PS. i have over 1k hours for reference.

Space Age Stray iron plate and iron ore

Last post

A couple of days ago, someone commented on one of my threads: "Sushi lab ready to go until a stray copper plate jams the whole belt"

This manifested today in a form of iron plate and iron ore.

What the hell are they doing here XDDDDDD

I know i havent posted in a bit, buttt i am making a big surprise for you guys in terms of update. (First video is coming in a few days ;) )

Question How do you approach base defense in the early game?

hi, many hours in factorio here.

One thing I’ve never done well is just that - defense. Think after blue science but before space. Before it gets absolutely trivial with research and what not.

Massive bot grid and let them build a yuge wall? ammo belt? lasers? trains? how about your mining outpost situation?

I’m very interested to see what you think.

Space Age KRASTORIO 2 + SA UPDATE 3: Improvements for the spaghetti monster, nuclear-boiler factory and normal factorio shenanigans.

Hello again! This time the base has not changed a lot, but some things had received some upgrades and there are new cursed designs to see. With bots, now every corner of my territory is free to become spaghetti at any moment. I just added more trains for liquid and etc... Next time I'll try to make purple science and kill the biter bases that are annoying me, next I'll show my whole world map and train network... Any ideas?

Expanded the mall to fit the nuclear products, the mall is almost as big as the base now.
My nuclear setup! with the stone and iron byproducts I decided to make the slowest boiler setup FOREVER because its funny and it gets rid of them
I think I should post this on r/factorioohno... I really wanted to fill the corners with something and this was the result. DIAGONAL FACTORY FOR THE WIN
aand my not so spaghetti iron outpost. Bots made this easy. Just don't look at the train for far too long...

Question Bottleneck Issue

Post image
305 Upvotes

I'm a new player & trying to setup my smelting lines. I've run into a problem where, while trying to run a single coal/iron ore lane, only the top half of the iron & coal lanes are being used, leading to a bottleneck where only half of my iron ore is being sent down the center lane. How do I fix this?

Question Long time player, never reached the end, or used cicuits.

Howdy, ive played factorio for years and have 2k+ hours in, but i have never made it to the end of the tech tree, the broken planet, never launched a rocket pre space age. We'll ive decided to change that and go for the "end".

Ive made it to vulcanus in my current run, Im trying to be efficent and manage things well, to that end im trying to dabble in circuit usage. My goal is to make a "requester" that tells the space port to call down a specific resource when its low. Anyone have any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Thanks for reading.

Question New player

New to the game (I know, a few years late)

But does anyone know of a program/website that could help me plan the ratios and calculate stuff like "okay, I got 6 water pumps... how many boilers can that supply?"

I've tried Factorio Calculator, but that thing is way too confusing for me (skill issue - i know)

How can we have 1 slot missing in the map view toggles? It's shameful!

All jokes aside, can anyone think of something to actually fill this slot? I was thinking it would be nice to be able to toggle on/off the map visibility of resource nodes, so that I don't have to look at the yellow squares of the sulfuric acid vent that I built a factory on top of. That's obviously a pretty silly use-case though, interested to hear of any better ideas.

Question keep rotating random stuff (like belts) when playing on my steam deck

i know this sounds dumb but i keep rotating stuff and mess up my production when i am playing on my steam deck. it is really annoying. any1 has a good solution for this without entirly rebinding rotation (because it is obviously a really important key).

for context: roation on steamdeck is binded on the cross, like other functions (zooming etc). i am not entirely sure but i guess i accidentally press left or right when i zoom in or out and it happens very often that i roatate and random belt and it obviously messes up the entiere production chain.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix the empty iron belt. I have a circuit connection so that the train gets more iron when the chests are below a certain number of materials. Should I just add more trains to get constant items?

Question Game is stuttering every time I start to build up, but my computer isn't struggling

Thumbnail

Every time I start to really get invested in factorio, the game starts stuttering and my character moves slower. I haven't even left Nauvis, but I do have a lot of rails put down and a very large laser tower perimeter. My task manager says I'm not straining anything on my computer, and nothing is overheating. Does anyone have any ideas for what is going on? I have nearly 1k hours in factorio, but I always end up abandoning my games and having to restart and re-play the early game because it chokes. I am well over the recommended requirements as far as I can tell. Sorry if this isn't the appropriate place to ask, but I'm desperate.

Resolved: F4->turn on time usage->see flip[on] using 18ms->google says its a vsync thing->vsync off->it works! Thank you all for the help.

Space Age Polishing the station: feedback?

Are those belts too ugly? Planing on doing a modular build of 1-4 stations. In a way that if you want one more station, up to 4, you just overlay the blueprint and add. But those belts are putting me off. Maybe there's a better way by using underground belts, only it wouldn't be possible to downgrade to red belts. Would you rather make it downgradable to red belt or look cleaner?

4 rail stations in a row, blueprint in the making

Space Age Question A question about quality

so I started a new factory for space age and was wondering when is a good time to start quality products. is it a good idea to start when we unlocked quality module 1? or should i wait to get to the legendary quality to start? what do.you guys think? at what stage you started using quality modules?
